Unsigned Senior Showcase: Quick Hits

By Illinois and Wisconsin Scouting Staff

Our final unsigned senior event for the 2018 class finished with a roster of nearly 100 participants and over 40 college coaches in attendance. The roster was highlighted by outfield play with some high-level stat lines and some intriguing bats. Here’s a quick look at some standouts from the event.

Cameron Robinson is a high upside two-way talent at 6-foot-4, 190-pounds. The Champaign Central product ran his fastball up to 86 mph with quick arm and showed the same quick twitch hands at the plate, leaving recruiters to dream on his right-handed power potential.

+ Outfielder Chris McFarland (Rock Island Alleman) had a solid overall day. McFarland ran a 7.06 60, exit velocity of 86 mph and was 82 mph from the outfield. Defensively, McFarland plays through the baseball, gets rid of it quick and his throws stay true.

+ 6-foot-1, 170-pound Nicholas Calip (Schaumburg) was yet another impressive outfielder to emerge on Sunday. Calip attacks the baseball in the outfield, has a quick, clean release and topped at 84 mph. At the plate he has a fast bat and looks to do damage on every swing,.

+ When it comes to position players, OF Kevin Lapka (Lane Tech) was one of the biggest winners of the event. The athletically built right-handed hitter ran a 6.94 60, was 95 mph from a tee and showed natural outfield actions. Lapka has a loose, athletic swing with present bat speed and fluid rhythm throughout.

+ Left/left OF Zach Asik (Wisconsin Lutheran, WI) flashed a quick left-handed bat and made a lot of hard contact in his round of batting practice. In the outfield he plays through the baseball and has a loose arm that topped at 83 mph.

Jeff Morton is a left/left OF/LHP who ran his fastball up to 82 mph but showed best as a position player. Morton, who has started for Mundelein HS since his sophomore year does not get cheated at the plate and consistently found the barrel.

+ Pewaukee’s (WI) Steele Beatty put up one of the better stat lines of the day. His arm played at 89 mph from the outfield, posted a 95 mph exit velocity and ran a 7.33 in the 60. Beatty projects as an aggressive middle of the order right-fielder with some pop to his pull side.

Noah Miller (St. Rita) intrigued our staff with advanced left-handed arm strength (88 mph) from the outfield that would make him interesting to see on the mound as well. Miller also ran a 7.19 60 and registered a 93 mph exit velocity.

+ OF Max Snowden (Grayslake Central) ran an eye-popping 6.66 laser-timed 60 and showed well above average tools from the right side of the plate and in the outfield. Offensively, his hands work well, flashing quick-twitch and pull-side power at times.

Stephen Insley (St. Rita) flashed solid actions and steady hands on the infield while showing an accurate arm clocked at 79 mph across the diamond. Offensively, he stays short to the ball, line-drive approach and 91 mph exit velocity.

Connor Bauer (Hinsdale Central) showed as one of the better catchers in attendance. He led the day with a 2.04 pop time and a quick transfer out of the crouch.

Zachary Lauras (Minooka), a 6-foot, 175-pound athletically built middle infielder, ran one of the top 60 yard dashes of the event, 6.71. Offensively, compact swing, makes hard pull contact producing line drives and a 92 mph exit velocity.

+ RHP Wes Sommers (Appleton North, WI) flashed the top fastball velocity on the mound touching 87 mph.

Ben Seaman (West Bend East, WI) is a 6-foot-2, 160-pound two-way prospect with a lanky, athletic frame, square, wide shoulders. Showcased one of the top arms on the infield. A short, loose, quick arm action, throws carry across the infield with easy effort, 79 mph. Frame projects well on the mound, clean, easy arm action, fastball up to 82 mph. With continued physical development, should see an increase in velocity and power.

Ryan Flowers (St. Joseph, 2018) stood out as the clear favorite defender on the infield. Flowers showcased all the tools to stick at shortstop at the next level and has a loose, athletic swing with bat speed.

Mack Malczewski (Prospect) is an RHP to follow. The younger brother of Auburn LHP Welby Malczewski (Prospect, 2013), Mack is 6-foot-4, 212-pounds with a loose arm that sat 83-84 mph.
