Brent Gibbs, who’s one of the best Class of 2013 prospects in the state, has verbally committed to Indiana University. The strong-bodied 6-foot, 195-pound catcher is a top 10 prospect in Illinois. As a sophomore, Gibbs batted .494 with 5 homers, 9 doubles and 41 RBI for Alton HS last spring.

Gibbs is arguably the best defensive catcher in the class. He possesses a plus arm, as he was clocked at 83 mph from the crouch at a Prep Baseball Report event last winter with consistent 1.9 pop times.

Gibbs marks the fourth Class of 2013 prospect in Illinois to give a verbal commitment, joining Harrisburg RHP/SS Ryne Roper (Illinois), Metamora INF Spencer Gaa (Bradley) and St. Laurence SS/RHP Kevin Smith (Creighton). Gibbs, Roper and Gaa all participated in the Prep Baseball Report Future Games, powered by Under Armour, in August.
