Class of 2018 Games: Outfield Analysis

Prep Baseball Report-Kansas/Missouri held the Class of 2018 Games on June 27 at Washburn University in Topeka, Kansas. Over 50 players took part in the event from around region.

Player profiles have been updated with video, running times, throwing velocities and profile picture.  In the days to come, we will break down the event position-by-position.  Today, we will take a look at the outfielders from the event.  Players are listed in alphabetical order.

Coaches will have new profiles to add their dashboard on ScoutPlus and players will be able to update information on their profile with ProspectPlus.

Outfielders

Derek Abeln OF / Hickman , MO / 2018

Abeln is a strong 5-foot-10 190-pound right-handed throwing and hitting outfielder in Missouri’s 2018 class. He ran a 6.99 laser timed 60 and 4.34 home-to-first. Abeln’s exit velo of 93 mph was the second fasted recorded at the event. During batting practice, Abeln starts in an upright and athletic stance, quick hands, level bath path and gets good extension through contact. During game action he stuck the ball well and lined out to second base. Defensively, Abeln showed good actions, a strong arm with carry and positional velo of 84 mph, and mostly accurate throws.

Brett Baker C / Blue Springs South, MO / 2018

Baker is a 5-foot-11 172 pound right handed hitting catcher in Missouri’s 2018 class. He ran an 8.22 laser timed 60 and a 4.85 home-to-first. He showed an exit velocity of 79 mph. At the plate, Richardson showed the ability to hit line drives to the opposite field while starting with an open stance, a minimal load and being short/quick to the baseball. Behind the plate, pop times were recorded between 2.19-2.34 seconds, 68 mph positional velocity, a smooth exchange and mostly accurate throws. While in the outfield, Richardson showed clean footwork, a positional velo of 70 mph, worked well towards his target with mostly accurate throws.

Reese Carmona C / Lawrence , KS / 2018

Carmona is an athletic and slender framed left-handed hitting catcher in Kansas’ 2018 class. He ran a 7.11 laser timed 60 and 4.32 home-to-first. He showed an exit velocity of 82 mph. Carmona displayed a simple swing that was quick to the baseball, barrel was flat through the zone, quiet hands while spraying line drives to all fields during batting practice. During the game Carmona showed a disciplined approach with a good eye for the strike zone. Defensively, behind the plate, his pop times were between 2.07-2.24 seconds, a positional velo of 72 mph, good actions, loads up with his arm while working forward towards the target. While in the outfield Carmona showed quality footwork, smooth actions, works behind the ball and showed a positional velo of 79 mph and accurate throws.

Nicholas Chomyak 3B / Shawnee Mission Northwest, KS / 2018

Chomyak is a 5-foot-10 175 pound right-handed hitting infielder, outfielder and RHP in Kansas’ 2018 class. He ran 7.55 laser timed 60 and a 4.76 home-to-first. His exit velo is 85 mph. At the plate, Chomyak includes a leg lift with his load, even stride, level bat path and controls his body throughout his swing. On the infield, positional velo is 81 mph with accurate throws, moved well side to side and has long arm action. In the outfield, he showed good footwork, positional velo of 83 and fairly accurate throws. On the mound, Chomyak uses an OT slot to throw fastballs that have the ability to run and cut, velo range was between 79-82, curveball showed sharp 12-to-6 action, 73-77 mph and thrown with near fastball arm speed. Chomyak utilizes a max effort delivery and accelerates down the mound with an aggressive lower half.

Tyler Halstead OF / Riley County , KS / 2018

Halstead has an athletic build at 6-foot 175 pounds is a left-handed throwing and swinging outfielder in Kansas’ 2018 class. He ran a 6.61 laser timed 60 and 3.96 home-to-first, both being the fastest times at the event. Exit velo was 91 mph. During batting practice, Halstead starts with an open stance, quick hands, displayed some pop with a gap-to-gap approach and a level bat path. During game action he struck the ball very well twice, both times lining out to left field. Defensively, Halstead showed a plus arm with a positional velo of 80 mph, accurate throws and good actions.

Connor Jeffers C / Burlington , KS / 2018

Jeffers is a strong and athletic 5-foot-11 185-pound right-handed hitting catcher in Kansas’ 2018 class. He ran a 7.02 laser timed 60 and a 4.21 home-to-first. He showed an exit velo of 92 mph, which put him in the top 5 at the event. At the plate, Jeffers starts with a slightly open stance, balance throughout his swing, quiet hands and power to the opposite field. Jeffers was 3-for-4 with 3 singles in game action. In the outfield, he was aggressive to the baseball, good footwork, positional velo of 82 mph with fairly accurate throws. Behind the plate, Jeffers pop times ranged from 2.01-2.14 seconds, fairly accurate throws, fluid footwork, quick hands and release.

Trevor Jones RHP / Olathe Northwest, KS / 2018

Jones is a 6-foot-1 190 pound right-handed hitting outfielder and RHP in Kansas’ 2018 class. He ran a 8.03 laser timed 60 and a 4.95 home-to-first. Exit velo was recorded at 80 mph. At the plate, Jones incorporates a toe tap in his load, in-line stride and is well balanced throughout his swing. In the outfield, Jones had proper footwork, stayed behind the baseball, had a positional velo of 80 mph with mostly accurate throws. On the mound, Jones has a smooth delivery, works slightly across his body, uses an abbreviated leg lift with good direction towards his target. fastball was thrown for a high percentage of strikes between 77-80 mph and he showed good feel for his curveball, 62-67 mph with 12-to-6 action and late bite.

Ryan Koval OF / Olathe South, KS / 2018

Koval has a large frame a 6-foot-3 and 185 pounds and is a right-handed hitting outfielder in Kansas’ 2018 class. He ran a 6.98 laser timed 60 and a 4.66 home-to-first. Koval’s exit velo was 92 mph which made him one of the top performers in that category. During batting practice, Koval shows a wider but athletic stance that is slightly open, pop to his pull side, simple delivery and balance throughout his swing. From the outfield, Koval made mostly accurate throws while topping out at 85 mph, with carry on the baseball. In addition to a plus arm, he showed good actions and attacked the baseball.

Gabriel Lopez OF / Shawnee Mission South, KS / 2018

Lopez is a slender framed 6-foot-1 160-pound left-handed outfielder and pitcher in Kansas’ 2018 class. He ran a 7.22 laser timed 60 and 4.34 home-to-first. At the plate, Lopez displays a slightly open stance, simple load, uses momentum of body in swing, uphill bat path, 82 mph exit velo and singled up the middle in game action. In the outfield, Lopez is aggressive towards the baseball, showed good actions, long arm action, positional velo of 76 mph with fairly accurate throws. On the mound, Lopez is deceptive with arms and legs coming at the hitter, high ¾ slot, accelerates tempo down the mound, repeats, fastball shows arm side run between 72-77 mph, changeup showed sink and fade to armside at 66-67 mph, curveball had gradual 1-to-7 action.

Joshua Mitchell SS / Shawnee Mission Northwest, KS / 2018

Mitchell is an athletic 6-foot 175-pound infielder and RHP in Kansas’ 2018 class. He ran a 7.41 laser timed 60 and 4.34 home-to-first. Exit velo was recorded at 97 mph, which was the top for the event. At the plate, Mitchell showed a simple and repeatable swing during batting practice with bat speed/pop and a well struck line out to CF during game action. On the infield, Mitchell displayed his athleticism with good actions, topping at 83 mph and with accurate throws. In the outfield, he was aggressive to the ball, show off a strong off topping at 86 mph with fairly accurate throws. On the mound, Mitchell repeats his delivery with a quicker tempo and loose arm. He is consistently around the strike zone with a fastball that runs to his arm side, tops at 86 mph and works between 82-85 mph. He also had good feel for his curveball between 70-74 with 11-to-5 action with late bite.

Will Morris OF / Mill Valley, KS / 2018

Morris is a 5-foot-9 160-pound switch-hitting outfielder in Kansas’ 2018 class. He ran a 6.93 laser timed 60 and a 4.02 home-to-first from the left side while running a 4.13 from the right side. Exit velo from the left side was 76 mph and 82 mph from the right side. Morris shows similar batting stances from both sides of the plate, athletic base that stays balanced throughout his swing, simple loads, hit multiple line drives during bp and singled to the opposite field while hitting from the left side in game action while also stealing a base. Defensively, in the outfield Morris showed good actions, was aggressive to the baseball, quick feet, positional velo of 74 mph with mostly accurate throws.

Connor Nekola OF / Mill Valley, KS / 2018

Nekola is a 6-foot 165-pound right-handed outfielder and pitcher in Kansas’ 2018 class. He ran a 7.22 laser timed 60 and a 4.34 home to first. At the plate, Nekola shows an upright posture, athletic stance, simple load with hands and a toe tap, smooth swing, short stride and 85 mph exit velo. In the outfield, he showed good actions, quick arm action, positional velo of 81 mph and mostly accurate throws. On the mound, Nekola shows tempo in his delivery, accelerates down the mound, quick arm action, repeats, FB has run to arm side between 78-82 mph and thrown for a high percentage of strikes, CB showed gradual 11-to-5 bite at 65-67 mph and the changeup proved to be effective at 74-75 mph with arm side run and thrown near fastball arm speed.

David Robinson 2B / Bishop Miege, KS / 2018

Robinson has a strong and athletic build at 5-foot-11 and 180 pounds. He ran a 7.13 laser timed 60 and a 4.31 home-to-first. At the plate, Robinson uses a leg lift in his load, in line stride and showed some pop to his pull side during bp. During game action he singled up the middle. Defensively, in the outfield Robinson showed athletic movements with a strong arm topping at 86 mph and accurate throws. While on the infield, Robinson had good footwork, a quick arm, 82 mph positional velo and accurate throws.

Zac Salyers OF / Kickapoo, MO / 2018

Salyers is a 5-foot-8 168-pound right-handed hitting infielder in Missouri’s 2018 class. He ran a 7.26 laser timed 60 and a 4.44 home-to-first. Exit velo topped out at 89 mph. At the plate during batting practice, Salyers has an athletic stance, wider base, quiet hands and sprayed line drives throughout the round. Defensively in the outfield, Salyers works behind the baseball, shows aggressive actions, long arm action, positional velocity of 75 mph and made accurate throws.

Matthew Schrick OF / Atchison , KS / 2018

Schrick is a 5-foot-11 178-pound right-handed hitting infielder and outfielder in Kansas’ 2018 class. He ran a 7.12 laser timed 60 and a 4.69 home-to-first. At the plate, Schrick has an open stance, smooth stroke, quick hands, level bat path and showed good pop to both the middle and opposite fields. In the outfield, Schrick showed off a strong arm, 84 mph positional velo, mostly accurate throws, fluid footwork. On the infield, he showed quick feet, good range to both glove and arm sides, long arm action, high three quarters release, 81 mph positional velo with mostly accurate throws.
