IA Underclass Prospect Games: Pitching Evaluations

Prep Baseball Report's IA Underclass Prospect Games event took place on Monday, July 31, 2017. The event was held at Duane Banks Field on the campus of the University of Iowa. The event featured prospects from the 2019, 2020 and 2021 grad classes. 

There were a number of great individual performances this year at the IA Underclass Prospect Games

Below we have listed the evaluations for all the pitchers in attendance at event. 2020 Ty Langenberg, RHP, Urbandale takes the top spot for the pitchers in the event. Langenberg is an long athletic arm who produced consistent 86-88 mph velocity, flashes an above avg. breaking ball, and has projection for the future.

PITCHING EVALS (ALPHABETICAL)

Cory Anderson, SS/RHP, Wilton, 2019
5-foot-9, 145-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. 4.57 home-to-first time. Athletic stance, average balance through swing, slight arm bar in load, out and around at contact, barrels ball consistently, pull approach with flat path producing line drives, 79 mph exit velocity. Solid athleticism, late glove presentation, winds up to throw, has arm strength and accuracy to bag, 81 mph arm across infield. On mound; short rocker step into balance point, short arm action, short stride and lands across body, has extension to plate. Fastball has late run into RHH at 79-81 mph for strikes. 11/5 curveball is thrown hard with tight rotation and late break. Strike thrower who dominated in inning of work.

Cole Arduser, SS/RHP, Solon, 2020
6-foot, 160-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. 4.72 home-to-first time. Square spread stance, choppy hand rhythm, flashes pop in bat, pull side contact, with back spin and carry, 74 mph exit velocity. Avg. hands and feet, works through ball, accurate to bag, 76 mph arm strength across infield. On mound; high leg kick delivery, short stride down mound, upright release, long pie arm action. Fastball was 75-78 mph with avg. run and sink to plate. Rolling break on 11/5 curveball with inconsistent shape. Continued to develop feel for changeup.

Rick Atkins, LHP, Marion, 2019
6-foot, 170-pound left-handed hitting pitcher. Up and comer in the 2019 class. Up tempo delivery, coils over the rubber, hides baseball, and has deception. Quick arm, ball jumps on hitter with life, varying cut and run action, producing fastballs at 82-84 mph. Breaking ball is inconsistent; but at times will flash as a well above avg. pitch with tight rotation and 1/7 shape at 72-74 mph. Changeup shows solid fade and sink in and around zone.

Owen Bennett, LHP/OF, Davis County, 2019
5-foot-10, 165-pound left-handed hitting 2-way player. On mound; short rocker step, uncontrolled balance point, foot outside knee, lands hard across body, short arm action. Cut action on fastball, thrown with some effort, at 69-71 mph. Inconsistent command; but breaking ball has solid 1/7 shape and spin, and should continue to develop into solid out pitch. 4.59 home-to-first time. Open stance, strides to square, solid present strength, slight uphill plane, limited use of lower half, mostly mid/away spray contact, 74 mph exit velocity. Loses momentum when fielding, raw footwork in outfield, elevated throws to target, 72 mph arm from outfield.

Kyle Burns, OF/RHP, Sioux City East, 2019
6-foot, 180-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. 4.82 home-to-first time. Square stance, balanced, short load, present strength, simple swing, loud contact to pull side of field, consistent hard barrel contact with lift in swing plane, 87 mph exit velocity. Solid/avg. actions, works through ball, short arm action, online with accuracy, avg. carry to target, 78 mph arm from outfield. On mound; controlled delivery into short balance point, drop and drive to plate, with longer arm action out front. Fastball was 75-78 mph with straight action to plate. Curveball has solid 12/6 shape with small break for strikes.

Tyler Burns, RHP/OF, Council Bluffs Lewis Central, 2019
6-foot, 155-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. On mound; good sequence and rhythm in delivery, shows athleticism, slight stab and wrap on backside, works slightly downhill with clean arm action out front. Fastball was 78-80 mph, straight, thrown for strikes. Avg. spin and shape on 11/5 breaking ball. Also shows knuckleball with solid action to plate. 4.62 runner. Square stance, short stride with balance, short path to contact, flashes pop in bat, underneath baseball at contact, mid/pull approach, 88 mph exit velocity. Solid athlete, avg. actions, fields with 2 hands, long arm action, flashes carry and accuracy to target, 85 mph arm from outfield. Follow in 2019 class with continued development.

Grant Christy, 3B/RHP, Des Moines Christian, 2019
6-foot-1, 165-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. 4.97 home-to-first time. Tall stance, high hand load, some length to contact, flashes pop in bat, hard line drive contact, mid/pull approach, 85 mph exit velocity. Solid athleticism in field, flashes actions, soft hands with appropriate footwork, solid actions in field, 75 mph arm across infield. On mound; controlled delivery, clean mechanics, stiff shoulder delivery, land upright to plate. Fastball was 74-76 mph, mostly straight, with solid/avg. command. Early break with loose shape on 11/5 curveball. Inconsistent command of changeup.

Robert Crane, OF/LHP, Des Moines East, 2019
5-foot-7, 125-pound left-handed hitting 2-way player. 4.57 runner. Square stance,  deep load, flat bat plane, line drive and ground ball contact, 80 mph exit velocity. Fields with 2 hands, avg. actions, aggressive to baseball, accurate arm, 70 mph arm from outfield. Short balance point, long draw on backside, pie arm action. Fastball has slight sink at 68-70 mph; touching 72 mph. Tends to slow arm when throwing 2/8 sweeping breaking ball.

Jacob Craven, RHP, Ogden, 2019
5-foot-10, 160-pound right-handed hitting pitcher. Slight tuck and tip at balance point, uptempo to plate, flashes arm quickness, upright on release with recoil. Fastball was 79-82 mph working on downhill plane for strikes. Flashes above avg. shape and depth on 11/5 curveball with short break to plate.

Hunter Day, RHP/OF, Bloomington Jefferson (MN), 2020
6-foot-2, 160-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. On mound; lean athletic build, clean compact arm action, lands upright and falls down mound occasionally. Fastball was 79-82 mph with riding life and late run into RHH. Has feel for 11/5 curveball, solid shape, with late short break. 4.52 home-to-first time. Tall stance, leg kick trigger, uphill path with length to contact, solid contact to pull side gap, 81 mph exit velocity. Solid athlete, raw fielding mechanics, quick release, avg. accuracy and carry to target, 81 mph arm from outfield.

Aaron Downs, 2B/RHP, Pella, 2021
5-foot-11, 170-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. One of top performers at event. Athletic build with room to grow. Shows above avg. wiry strength for age. 4.21 home-to-first time. Consistent loud contact during BP; one hopping both walls in the gaps, above avg. bat speed, had multiple hits during game action, 94 mph exit velocity. Fields low to ground with soft hands and above avg. footwork, funnels underneath occasionally, well above avg. actions, short arm action with carry to bag, 75 mph arm strength across infield. Athletic with body control, drop and drive to plate, quick arm, OT slot. Strike thrower producing 81-83 mph fastballs with slight life. Tends to over-throw 12/6 breaking ball. Well above avg. fade, sink, and feel for changeup. One of top 2021 grads in the state of Iowa.

Graysen Drezek, RHP, North Scott, 2020
6-foot-1, 190-pound right-handed hitting pitcher. Strong durable frame. Athletic leg kick into slight tuck and turn delivery. Shows extension out front; uses lower half well in delivery. Longer arm action with high ¾ arm slot. Fastball was 81-83 mph with late run and sink for strikes. Some hitch in throwing mechanics on breaking ball; should continue to develop into solid pitch in future. Tends to slow arm on changeup causing flat action to plate. Good build with solid arm action and mechanics- Strong follow in IA 2020 class with continued polish and development.

Nile Foss, LHP/OF, Carlisle, 2020
5-foot-9, 155-pound left-handed hitting 2-way player. On mound; deliberate delivery, hides ball behind hip, explodes out of balance point with quickness. Cut action with tilt inside to RHH with quality action at 74-76 mph for strikes. Tends to fall off side of mound causing loopy shape and early break on curveball. 4.97 runner. Early rhythm in hands, body load, short twitchy swing, pull approach, solid line drive contact, 77 mph exit velocity. Solid athleticism, avg. aggression through baseball, loose actions, short clean arm action, OT slot, has solid carry with accuracy to target, 80 mph arm from outfield. Follow in 2020 class with continued physical gains.

Andrew Fox, OF/RHP, Des Moines Christian, 2019
5-foot-10, 145-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. 4.79 runner. Closed stance, has rhythm in load and stride, uses hands to baseball, hard gap to gap contact, 81 mph exit velocity. Moves well in field with above avg. actions, sound fielder, light on his feet, and works through baseball. Throws are online with above avg. carry and accuracy from projectable clean arm action, 84 mph arm from outfield. On mound; slight tuck and turn, slight crouch at balance, lands in line with catcher, clean compact arm action with solid hand speed. Fastball showed flashes of late life at77-79 mph. Breaking ball has late action; thrown at 69-71 mph.

Jayden Gibson, C/RHP, Grinnell, 2019
6-foot, 185-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. 4.96-home-to-first time. Square stance, slight easy load, some stiffness in shoulders, works both gaps, flashes solid strength and bat speed, 89 mph exit velocity. Above avg. receiver behind plate, works underneath ball, holds pitches in zone, loose actions with room to grow, quick release on throws, carry to bag, above avg. accuracy, 78 mph arm strength with 1.92-2.03 pop times. Has projection as catch & throw guy in college.

Alex Greiner, LHP, Ankeny Centennial, 2020
5-foot-9, 160-pound left-handed hitting pitcher. Compact delivery, arm starts long and shortens through release, needs improvement with use of lower half, slight cross-fire delivery. Cut action on fastball at 68-71 mph. Big shape with rolling break on 1/7 curveball. Cut action on changeup at 57-61 mph.

Blake Grevengoed, SS/RHP, WDM Valley, 2019
6-foot, 160-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. 4.75 home-to-first time. Body load, pre-set hands, simple line drive swing plane, fly ball contact, shows extension through baseball, gap to gap approach, 82 mph exit velocity. Fields out front, shows angles and works through ball, sure hands, long arm action, accurate to bag, 78 mph arm strength across infield. On mound; short rocker step into controlled balance point, tucks front side early, short arm action from OT slot. Fastball was 78-79 mph with slight running action to plate. Developing breaking ball shows flashes of tight spin and quality 11/5 shape.

Andrue Henry, 3B/RHP, Dubuque Senior, 2020
6-foot-3, 200-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. 5.53 home-to-first time. Above avg. ability to hit, multi- extra base hits during game action, Square stance, shows rhythm with easy leg kick trigger, deeper load, has extension through contact, consistent solid contact to gaps, 89 mph exit velocity. Shows solid hands and feet in field, sure glove, plays on balls of feet and moves through ball well, clean arm action, accuracy and carry to bag, 79 mph arm strength across field. Strong follow in 2020 class with bat. On mound; shows body control, repeats mechanics, clean compact arm action, solid extension out front. Fastball was 76-78 mph, good downhill plane, with slight arm-side action for strikes. Loose spin on 10/4 breaking ball for strikes. Late arm-side fade and sink on changeup thrown with above avg. arm speed.

Jake Hull, RHP/3B, Grinnell, 2020
6-foot-2, 175-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. On mound; solid rhythm and tempo, tucks front side early, shoulder delivery with slight stiffness. Fastball was straight, delivered on downhill plane, at 75-77 mph. Breaking ball tends to back up on hitter with inconsistent shape. 4.65 runner. Tall stance, present strength, slight shoulder load, hard contact to mid/pull side of field, line drive and fly balls off bat, 82 mph exit velocity. Aggressive fielder, confident with glove, solid/avg. actions, solid athlete, accurate throws to bag, 73 mph arm across infield.

Cooper Johnson, 3B/RHP, WDM Valley, 2019
6-foot-1, 185-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. 5.13 runner. Taller athletic build, solid present strength, line drive swing plane, barrel exits zone early, spin tendencies, flashed hard contact to middle of field, 79 mph exit velocity. Solid pre-pitch footwork, tends to sit back on balls, sure hands, long arm action, avg. accuracy to bag, 79 mph arm strength across. On mound; tempo and rhythm in delivery, locks into inverted W with arm action, works downhill and has extension to plate. Fastball was 77-80 mph with occasional life for strikes. Shows above avg. depth on tight 11/5 breaking ball with small late break.

Cole Kaufman, LHP/1B, Waukee, 2019
5-foot-10, 180-pound left-handed hitting 2-way player. On mound; short turn into medium balance point, slight pie arm action, hides ball from hitter, with slight cross-fire delivery. Fastball was 78-80 mph with flashes of late cut action. Curveball has good tilt, thrown with 1/7 shape, inconsistent command left short of plate. Turns changeup over creating solid fade and sinking action. 4.88 runner. Tall stance, body load, short path through zone, lift in swing plane, pull approach, spray contact, 81 mph exit velocity. Soft hands in field, solid footwork, comfortable around bag, sound receiver at first, 78 mph arm across infield.

Chase Keeney, LHP, Cedar Rapids Jefferson, 2019
6-foot, 170-pound left-handed hitting pitcher. One of better pitching performances at event. Controlled delivery, lands across body creating deception and hides baseball, well above avg. command of 3 pitch mix. Consistently pounds bottom of zone with 76-79 mph fastball working off the end of the barrel and mixing in jam shots. 1/7 curveball is consistently thrown for strikes with tight spin and small short break. Consistently throws quality strikes, works fast, and misses barrels.

Ty Langenberg, RHP, Urbandale, 2020
6-foot-1, 161-pound right-handed hitting pitcher. Lean athletic build with room for continued physical development. Shows tempo to delivery, clean arm action out front, with flashes of life to fastball. Works downhill to plate at 84-87 mph; touching 88 mph. Shows better command in wind-up; tends to rush to plate out of stretch. Breaking ball is still developing but flashes 11/5 quality shape and is thrown with good arm speed. High follow in 2020 class and should be watched closely over course of year.

Jalen Martinez, OF/LHP, Waukee, 2020
6-foot-1, 165-pound right-hand hitting 2-way player. 4.82 home-to-first time. Loads into lower hand slot, flashes quick hands to contact, gap to gap approach , spray contact, 85 mph exit velocity. Shows athleticism in field, easy actions, works through ball, above avg. footwork, throws have carry and accuracy from long athletic arm action, 83 mph arm from outfield. On mound; shows rhythm and tempo to delivery, good sync with upper and lower half, heavy wrap on back-side, some quickness to arm and clean out front. Fastball was 80-81 mph, mostly straight, with solid/avg. command. Sweeping break on 1/7 curveball for strikes.

Nate McCombs, LHP/1B, Treynor, 2020
6-foot-3, 195-pound left-handed hitting 2-way player. On mound; has rhythm and tempo, long one piece arm action, upright finish, and turns ball over on release. Fastball was 71-73 mph, touching 75 mph, with slight cutting action to plate. Early break on 1/7 curveball with avg. shape. 5.14 runner. Square stance, leg kick trigger, short to contact, flare oppo contact, flashed occasional hard contact to gaps, some stiffness in swing, 84 mph exit velocity. Sure hands, light on feet, comfortable around bag, solid receiver, 72 mph arm across infield.

Collin McCrabb, RHP/3B, Wilton, 2019
5-foot-11, 185-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. On mound; controlled delivery, shows tempo, compact mechanics, hides ball behind body, with solid extension and finish. Fastball was 78-80 mph and showed ability to locate to both sides of plate. Slider was tight spin with late 11/5 break down in zone for strikes. 4.71 home-to-first time. Present strength in compact frame, body load, short to contact, above avg. pop in bat, hard contact to mid/pull side of field, 92 mph exit velocity. Average footwork, works through ball, sure hands, follows throws across, short arm action, accuracy and carry to bag, 79 mph arm strength across infield.

Sam McCune, LHP/1B, WDM Valley, 2019
6-foot-4, 225-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. On mound; uptempo through balance point, throws glove side down mound creating deception, long arm action- shortens through- and delivers from high ¾ slot. Fastball was 82-85 mph, slight cut, and works in to right-handed hitters. 68-69 mph curveball is more get me over type pitch. Slider is above avg., thrown at 76-78 mph, with sharp 1/7 break, well above avg. depth and is thrown on tilted plane. 4.69 runner. Present strength, leg kick trigger, lower hand slot, middle/pull approach, hard pull contact, shows extension through baseball with lift, 91 mph exit velocity. Works down to up, sure hands, avg. footwork around bag, sound receiver, above avg. arm strength for first base, 83 mph arm across field.

Ethan Mortensen, RHP/SS, OA-BCIG, 2019
5-foot-8, 145-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. On mound; simple rocker step into tall tuck and turn balance point, clean arm action out front, has extension to plate. Fastball was 77-79 mph with slight running action. 11/5 curveball has early break; occasionally backing up on hitter. 4.78 home-to-first time. Shows rhythm in load, line drive swing plane, avg. use of lower half, roll-over ground ball contact, flashed line drive contact to gaps, 82 mph exit velocity. Easy arm action with accuracy, tends to sit back on balls, avg. glove and feet, has solid athleticism, 76 mph arm across infield.

Alec Nigut, 1B/LHP, Des Moines Roosevelt, 2020
5-foot-9, 160-pound left-handed hitting 2-way player. 5.01 home-to-first. Athletic stance, easy load, repeats swing well, minimal effort and repeats, consistent line drive contact to both gaps, 80 mph exit velocity. Works through ball, sure hands, comfortable around bag, solid receiver, 72 mph arm across field. On mound; shows body control in delivery, simple mechanics, slight hitch on back-side, clean out front with extension to plate. Fastball was 74-76 mph with varying run and cut action. 1/7 curveball has solid shape with inconsistent break to plate. Shows quality fade and sink on changeup for strikes.

Alec Patino, 3B/RHP, Sioux City East, 2020
5-foot-11, 185-pound left-handed hitting 2-way player. 4.76 home-to-first time. Fluid athletic swing, easy leg kick trigger, flashes pop in bat, mid/pull approach, occasional loud contact to gaps, 86 mph exit velocity. Clean arm action with carry to bag, solid actions, fields out front with soft hands, has above avg. actions, 81 mph arm across infield. On mound; controlled delivery, long clean arm action, with extension and finish on release. Fastball was 78-80 mph, occasional life, with late cutting action. 11/5 breaking ball has tight spin with late small break for strikes. Changeup is thrown with above avg. arm action creating solid fade and sink. Strong follow in 2020 class.

Mitch Randall, RHP/OF, Waukee, 2020
6-foot-1, 180-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. Controlled delivery, compact arm action, OT slot, works downhill, solid strike percentage. Fastball was 82-86 mph, straight, with occasional tilt away from hitter. Shows solid shape and spin on 11/5 breaking ball. Changeup was firm with flat action to plate. 4.66 home-to-first time. Present strength, body load, inconsistent bp session, flashes pop in bat, 85 mph exit velocity. Sure hands in field, works through ball, solid athleticism, elevated throws to plate, avg. accuracy, 77 mph arm from outfield.

Connor Reed, RHP/1B, Pekin, 2019
6-foot-1, 195-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. On mound; shows arm strength, long rocker step into balance point, ¾ arm slot, sinker/slider type arm. Fastball was 83-85 mph, slight downhill, with varying run and cut action. Cutter, thrown with high velo, shows small sideways break to plate with solid/avg. depth. 5.02 runner. Present strength, hitchy leg kick trigger, spray contact, line drive swing plane with lift through contact, 92 mph exit velocity. Solid athleticism at first, sure hands, solid footwork around bag, well above avg. arm strength for position, 85 mph arm across field.

Bryce Rinderknecht, RHP, Ankeny, 2020
5-foot-10, 160-pound right-handed hitting pitcher. Short tuck into balance point, good momentum down mound, some effort on release with head whack. Fastball was 74-77 mph with heavy late cut action at plate. Wobbly shape on 11/5 breaking ball. Flashes of fade and sink on changeup thrown with avg. arm speed.

Joel Sarver, RHP/SS, Champaign Central (IL), 2020
6-foot-1, 160-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. On mound; athletic high leg kick delivery with body control, compact arm action, clean out front, solid extension to plate, arm has quickness. Fastball was 80-82 mph with slight cutting action to plate. Breaking ball is above avg. with tight spin and 11/5 shape. Avg. fade with flat action on changeup. 4.72 home-to-first. Solid athlete, body load, slight rhythm in hands, consistently barreled baseball, line drives to both gaps, flashes of solid pop in bat, 81 mph exit velocity. Has easy actions in field, solid footwork, hands work, follows throws, shows carry and accuracy to bag, 84 mph arm across infield.

Bryce Schares, RHP/3B, Don Bosco, 2019
6-foot-2, 195-pound left-handed hitting 2-way player. Wide stance, short balance point, long arm action, works side to side with shoulders, longer stride with extension down mound. Fastball was 76-78 mph flat running action and occasional sink. Breaking ball, thrown at 67-69 mph, has loose 11/5 shape. 5.28 runner. Physically advanced, open stance, high back elbow, lift in swing plane, uphill path through zone, covers middle/in, gap to gap approach, 84 mph exit velocity. Heavier feet, tends to sit back on ball, avg./sure hands, accurate arm, 75 mph arm strength across infield.

Hunter Simpson, C/RHP, Dowling Catholic, 2019
5-foot-10, 170-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. 4.55 home-to-first time. Square stance, shoulder load, line drive swing plane with lift, hard contact to outfield, flashes of pop in bat, 89 mph exit velocity. Low balanced stance, good receiver, works baseball back to middle of plate, good ability and quickness side to side, has momentum through plate, quick release, above avg. accuracy to bag, 79 mph arm strength with 1.95-2.01 pop times. On mound; short rocker step into balance point, short pie arm action, collapses on back leg working down mound. Fastball was 78-79 mph with slight cutting action. 12/6 breaking ball has avg. shape with solid depth.

Logan Smith, RHP/OF, Dallas Center-Grimes, 2020
5-foot-9, 160-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. On mound; short rocker step into controlled balance point, short arm action, lands hard across body, with slight hitch in motion working down mound. Fastball varying run and cut action, strike thrower, at 81-83 mph. Breaking ball has above avg. 11/5 shape with avg. depth. 4.79 runner. Slight hand and body load, short to contact, mid/pull approach, flashes of pop in bat, top spin contact off bat, 77 mph exit velocity. Avg. actions, works through ball with good direction, short arm action, shows accuracy and carry to target, 86 mph arm from outfield.

Chris Spear, RHP, Ankeny, 2019
6-foot-1, 150-pound right-handed hitting pitcher. Controlled motion and tempo, pie arm action, has extension to plate, follows through well, ball jumps on hitter with late action. Fastball was 78-81 mph with running action and life. Shows avg. spin and shape on 11/5 curveball with early break to plate.

Nathan Steenblock, LHP/OF, Dowling Catholic, 2019
6-foot, 170-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. On mound; higher athletic leg kick into balance point, good direction to plate, slight one-piece arm action, has quickness out front. Fastball shows life with late arm-side run at 77-79 mph. Breaking ball, thrown for strikes, has small 1/7 shape and late break. 4.46 home-to-first time.
