Updated MS Class of 2020 Rankings

Ronald Sims
Mississippi Scouting Director

It’s been a busy several months since the last update to the Class of 2020 rankings. As we have worked our way through the summer schedule, more light has been shed on this talented class, with several of the top prospects in the 2020 class already pledging their commitments. There has been significant shakeup throughout the list with some significant risers, and additions to the list, which has expanded to 110 players.

The update of the 2020 class will continue the process of dusting off and updating the Mississippi class rankings, so be sure to check-in regularly in the weeks to come, as there will be plenty of updates and content to keep you busy.

Now, let’s dive into the class of 2020 rankings with a few highlights from the updated list...

Holding down the No. 1 spot in the 2020 class is Kellum Clark. The Mississippi State recruit has established himself as one of the top left handed bats nationally in his class. He is balanced and controlled throughout while working on an uphill plane through the zone. He demonstrates the ability to use the whole field, but his pull side power is what currently stands out most. He is patient at the plate with strong pitch recognition, and obvious power projection from a simple setup. The 6-foot-4, 221-pound athlete moves well on the diamond for his size, and showcases easy lag in the zone.

Having solidified himself as one of the top prospects in the state of Arizona, Colten Keith checks in at No. 2 in the updated list after transferring to Biloxi HS, MS. The Arizona State recruit has defined strength throughout an athletic 6-foot-3, 195-pound frame, and utilizes it well from the left side with twitchy hands that combine with strong wrists to drive the baseball. Keith has posted a 6.69 60-yard dash time as well as touching 90 mph on the mound. The athleticism combined with the elite bat speed and arm strength suggests legitimate two-way potential at the next level.

Mississippi State recruit Cade Smith comes in at No. 3. In the 2018 6A State Finals, Smith flashed electric arm strength on the bump, and struck out six batters in an efficient four innings of work. The right-hander has shown a loose, quick arm stroke and an athletic, repeatable delivery. Filled up the zone with his fastball that sat mostly 87-89 mph. Threw two different breaking balls, a sharp slider with short, late 11/4 break at 80-81. The other was more of a 12/6 curveball with downer shape and depth at 74-76 mph.

Coming in at No. 4 is Mississippi recruit, C/RHP Kemp Alderman. Alderman has strong and durable 6-foot-2, 215-pound frame. The primary catcher has shown explosive bat speed with pull side power potential as well as impressive arm strength on the mound with fastball touching 88-89 mph and solid sinking action.

Louisiana State recruit, RHP Brooks Rice rounds out the top five in updated class of 2020 rankings. The 6-foot-2 right-hander has run his fastball up to 89-90 mph with down angle through the zone. The fastball seems to play up even harder when he flashes a late breaking, 11/5 shape breaking ball at 71-73 mph. Rice has a very high ceiling and has continued to show improved feel to pitch.

Notable Risers

No. 11 3B/RHP Shane Lewis (Warren Central), No. 14 C Chase Honeycutt (DeSoto Central) No. 20 RHP/SS Alan Kivett (Warren Central)
