PBR Canada: 2024 Rankings Breakdown (AB/BC/ON)

Cam Black-Araujo
Assistant Director, PBR Canada

With the summer season drawing to our close, our staff begins to reflect on all the baseball we took in across the country over the past four months with updated rankings in Alberta, British Columbia and Ontario.

We had eyes on hundreds of incoming seniors throughout the summer with game coverage and showcases, but the month of August has allowed us to lock in on some of the top 2024s in the country with the West Coast Games in Las Vegas, as well as the Canada Cup which included the top 2024 and 2025 prospects from each province in the country.

Our staff has now combed through all the players, data and results from the summer and we're excited to release our updated 2024 rankings in Ontario, Alberta and British Columbia with the top ten from each below. We also go in-depth on some of the biggest risers, newcomers to know, top uncommitted's and more.

WHAT'S NEW AT THE TOP

Reid Clague LHP / 1B / Lambrick Park Secondary, BC / 2024

Clague has put together a strong overall summer that started with an impressive performance at the Best of the West tournament with the 6-foot-3, 180-pound left-hander sitting 84-86mph. He took the mound in a PBR uniform once again this month at the West Coast Games and continued to dominate, this time with the fastball up to 87mph with above-average spin. Overall game continues to trend upwards each time we see and there's still plenty of projection left.

Carter Cathers OF / 1B / Dover Bay, BC / 2024

Another prospect from BC who's really jumped onto the scene this summer and immediately catches your eye with his physical 6-foot-2, 210-pound frame. Flashed his hit tool at the Canada Cup last week as he went 9-for-25 (.375) with .483 OBP and three extra-base hits. Was a key contributor's in BC's silver medal run and showed the ability to find the barrel against quality arms.

Will Moore SS / 2B / Paris District, ON / 2024

Will Moore has jumped out to our staff each time we've had a look at Great Lakes this summer and he comes with tools across the board. The recent Indiana commit has bat-to-ball skills from the left-side and has added some strength over the past 12 months. Handles the middle infield well with arm strength and moves well on the infield, as well as on the basepaths.

THE RISERS

Dante Smith OF / Pickering, ON / 2024

Smith has been one of the most productive players in the province this summer and contributes in all areas of the game. Consistently puts up quality at-bats with feel to hit and find the barrel with no issues facing high-velocity arms. Defends well in the outfield with his speed and arm strength. The speed and high-IQ allow him to fly around the bases and take extra bases on the regular. Was a driving force for Ontario's offence en route to a gold medal at the Canada Cup earlier this month.

Anthony Unga RHP / P27 Academy, ON / 2024

Unga might very well be one of the biggest risers in the country as he entered 2023 relatively unknown on a national level but has quickly jumped up the ranks with size and fastball that has been clocked up to 93mph. The 6-foot-4, 220-pound right-hander took the mound at our Eastern Canada ProCase this past week and sat 88-90mph. Still developing on the mound as a pitcher and will be an intriguing follow in the spring as he continues to do so.

SUMMER SHOWCASE STANDOUTS

Owen Pote RHP / RHP / Archbishop Jordan, AB / 2024

Pote attended the New Year Open in Alberta back in February and immediately made a name for himself. Flashed a three-pitch mix with different characteristics on each pitch, feel for all three and the fastball sat 83-86mph with nothing but strikes during the bullpen. Oozes projectability at 6-foot-6, 196-pounds and returned to the Alberta Preseason Uncommitted Showcase the next month and followed it up by running his fastball up to 89mph. Earned an invite to the Best of the West tournament in May and proved that arsenal plays in-game against quality hitters.

Jack Thompson RHP / Walnut Grove Secondary, BC / 2024

Thompson put together a dominant complete game shutout performance at the Canada Cup earlier this month with six punchouts, no walks and two hits. Earned an invite to the Procase this past week and continued to flash his strike-throwing abilities. Worked with a three-pitch mix (SL/CH) and the fastball sat 82-84 T86. Has proven to be one of the more efficient 2024 arms in British Columbia over the past 3-4 months.

David Krahn SS / 2B / Anchor Academy , BC / 2024

Krahn has really jumped onto the scene over the past year and it began with an invite to the Best of the West tournament back in May. Following that, his game took major leaps in the hitting department as he was one of the hottest hitters in BC throughout the summer. His hit tool was on display all week long at the Canada Cup as he led BC with nine hits in 25 at-bats and showed the ability to hit to all fields. The Abbotsford Cardinals product capped off his summer with an invite to the PBR Canada Western ProCase this past week.

TOP UNCOMMITTED

Simon Baker OF / RHP / Cochrane, AB / 2024

Baker jumped onto the scene this summer and made his debut with the Canadian Junior National Team. There's tons to like with Baker as he has tools across the board and comes with a 6-foot-4, 190-pounds. Ran a 6.77 at the Calgary Summer Open and was up to 91mph from the outfield. The left-hander hitter has some pop in the bat that he's able to tap into in game-action and has plenty of upside on the mound with a fastball that consistently sits in the mid-80s.

Tate Martin SS / RHP / Vancouver College, BC / 2024

Physical right-handed hitter at 6-foot-1, 190-pounds and started the year hot with one of the top performances at a loaded Best of the West tournament in Kamloops. The North Shore Twins product has bat speed and strength that allow the ball to jump off his bat. We've also seen in the mound multiple times where he's sat in the upper 80s.

Tate Carey RHP / 3B / Riverside Secondary, ON / 2024

RHP Tate Carey is one of the top arms in the entire country has already fielded plenty of offers from Division I programs. Strong frame at 6-foot, 195-pounds with feel for the zone and a fastball that's consistently in the upper-80s to low-90s. Continues to dominate his competition each time he takes the mound and has shown well on a national level, as well. Impressive stuff on the mound and shouldn't be uncommitted much longer.
