The 2020 class has grown up, and as the midway point of their junior year approaches, these players have matured quickly into prospects. Elite-level talent and the depth of it serve to define the class as a whole. With seven 2020s contributing as members of Team USA’s gold medal-winning club at the Pan-Am Games earlier this month, the class’ impressive stature in amateur baseball was on full display.

In putting together the Overall Top 500, the Prep Baseball Report staff draws from the large collection of “Ground Forces” that are immersed at the local and state levels, to provide for overall listing. It is important to note that the PBR Overall Rankings only include states that we intimately know from our boots-on-the-ground scouting staff, and we are constantly out in the trenches scouting and evaluating to provide the most up-to-date information to the baseball community.

After much deliberation, and with multiple players building strong cases, the new No. 1 player in the class is C Drew Romo (The Woodlands HS, TX). A switch-hitting catcher, Romo possesses equal, impressive ability to swing the bat from both sides of the plate. Balanced with a compact stroke, he easily drives the ball to both gaps with some present power that will likely progress quickly over time. Behind the plate, his soft hands and strong arm allow him to receive at a high-level, handling the top pitching in the country, while limiting the running game with accurate throws and pop-times that hover between 1.9-2.0. His skills play up even higher in game, and he has demonstrated a propensity for getting big hits in big situations.

California products, RHP/OF Jared Jones(La Mirada HS, CA) and OF Pete Crow-Armstrong (Harvard-Westlake HS, CA) follow Romo. Jones’ electric arm has produced fastballs that touch 97 mph, and his abilities as a position player are not far behind. Combined with his strong arm, Jones’ athleticism will help him progress quickly as a prospect. Crow-Armstrong is potentially the top defensive outfielder in all of high school as he effortlessly tracks balls all over the field, and can unleash strong throws. At the plate, the left-handed hitter looks the part of a future top-of-the-order bat whose pitch recognition, combined with the ability to utilize the whole field, will play at any level.

Two of the top hitters in the class round out the top five. OFs Austin Hendrick (West Allegheny HS) and Dylan Crews (Lake Mary HS, FL) have risen to become the most feared bats. Hendrick possesses some of the biggest raw power, utilizing his quick hands and strong wrists to whip the barrel through the zone. Crews has consistently proven himself against the top players in the country, and always seems to find the barrel. While his tools are very strong, his production might be even stronger in proving himself as one of the top players in the class. He just gets hits.

Dylan Crews (October 2018)

Cracking the Top 10 for the first time is LHP Nate Savino (Potomac Falls HS, VA). Athletically-built at 6-foot-3, 195 pounds, Savino has run his fastball up to 93 mph in the past with more likely on the way. He features a longer arm stroke in the back with quickness out front, and some natural, late life on the fastball. His ability to counter with a sharp, late-breaking slider for swings and misses along with some feel for a changeup may allow him to develop into a frontline starter moving forward. Combine all that with the athleticism that he showcases as a hitter, and Savino certainly has the foundation to continue progressing quickly.

Perhaps the most exciting thing about the 2020 class is the determination and will to get better that each player exhibits. There is sure to be movement to this list in the future as progress is constant, but enough talking about it, have a look for yourself:
