6.18.15 - Solid frame with strength, typical catcher’s body composition, 6-foot, 200-pounds. Right-handed hitter, balanced stance, short stride, minimal loading action, strong balance at contact. Showed bat speed, good approach, line drive gap to gap type hitter, occasionally lunges. 85 mph exit velocity from the tee. Defensively showed natural actions behind the dish. Arm action is short and over the top, efficient, arm showed carry, 80 mph out of the crouch, quick release. Pop times ranged 1.96-2.01.
3.31.15 - 5-foot-11, 200-pound right-handed hitting first baseman currently ranked No. 44 in Illinois’ 2016 class. Gray also can catch, but doesn’t for HF due to senior backstop Jesse Forestell (Western Michigan signee). Gray was 3-for-4 in this contest, impressing with a balanced approach at the plate, and easy power. No excess movement in stride or hands, simple approach. Triple to center was a line shot (center fielder ran in initially). Double to left off the wall in left looked to be a home run off the bat, knocked down by wind blowing out straight to right field. Hits from a slightly open stance, crouched, utilized legs well in swing. Also singled past the shortstop on a hard hit ground ball.
2.15.15 - 5-foot-11, 200-pound strong right-handed hitting catcher hits from a balanced setup, short stride, hands load back smoothly, short, level bat path, gets extension, feel for barrel, line drives from gap-to-gap during batting practice, one of the better rounds of the event, 83 mph exit velocity off the tee. Defensively, pop times ranged from 2.00-2.08 to second, 76 mph out of the crouch from short, over-the-top arm slot, fluid footwork, clean exchanges, pushes the ball at times, above average receiving during bullpens, soft hands. Ran a 7.65 60.
8/1/14 - The 5-foot-11, 200-pound catcher/first baseman ran a 7.54 60, threw 78 mph across the diamond, 75 mph from the crouch, reeled off pop times between 1.90-2.0, and produced 83 mph exit velocity on Thursday’s workout day. In game one Gray went 0-for-2 with a walk, hit by pitch, run scored, and an RBI groundout. In game two he went 1-for-3 with stolen base. Gray will also play quarterback this fall for the HF Vikings.
1.19.14 - Skilled, higher-level catching prospect. Athletic build, 5-foot-10, 180-pound frame, proportional strength. Has shown steady improvements in game over the course of three years. Fundamentally sound in all facets of the game. Offensively, has loose, athletic hands, above-average bat speed, excellent extension after contact, maintains good balance throughout. Quiet, repeatable swing; short stride, minimal load, generates lift in swing, pull-side approach; 83 mph exit velocity. Defensively, has sound defensive catching mechanics – directional footwork, athletic transfer, short arm action, quick release. Accurate throws, registered pop times between 2.05-2.12, clocked at 73 mph from crouch. Ran a 7.69 60. Also starting quarterback on football team as sophomore.
7/23/13 - 5-foot-10, 180-pound catcher, sturdy build, athletic, also showed the ability to play a corner infield position. Advanced offensive approach, looks to be one of the stronger hitters in the Class of 2016. Hits from a balanced stance, highly athletic setup, short stride approach. Lower half works, showed solid balance throughout. Advanced bat speed, 82 mph exit velocity, gap to gap line drive hitter, shows rhythm. Run producing type hitter. Defensively showed a loose arm action from an over the top slot from the crouch, showed accuracy through his target with carry. 71 mph arm strength from the crouch. 2.09-2.22 pop times. Gray is a high energy player on the field and has all the characteristics of a team leader. High follow 2016 prospect.
1/20/13 - Solid frame, strong body, 5-foot-10, 165-pound catcher. Offensively shows advanced hitting tendencies for age, wide stance, no stride, quiet approach, excellent bat speed, line drive gap to gap hitter, projection for pull power, 82 mph exit velocity. Defensively shows solid receiving actions, setup tends to be high, consistent pop times 2.19-2.28.
10/28/12 - Gray is an athletic 5-foot-9, 165-pound catcher. Gray recorded pop times between 2.18-2.26 while consistently on the bag and displaying arm strength of 70 mph. Gray showed solid athleticism and soft hands receiving the baseball. Offensively, he sets his hands low and hits from a balanced stance while using a short stride. His barrel stays flat through the zone, producing line drives.
3/11/12 Gray is a 5-foot-7, 145-pound catcher who you likely will be reading a lot about in the coming years. Gray, who will attend Homewood-Flossmoor HS, showed advanced baseball IQ and had a best pop time of 2.22 and was clocked at 68 mph from the crouch. He showed quick, athletic feet, particularly in the bullpen, where he handled all types of pitching with ease. He receives with a firm wrist and soft hands, and moves extremely well laterally. At the plate, Gray continued to impress with his advanced approach and ability to consistently square up the baseball. He has quick hands through the zone and maintains good balance throughout. Additionally, Gray ran a 7.89 60. Gray showed as a talented prospect to watch for many years. The Class of 2016 player at the plate sprayed line drives while exhibiting a level, well-balanced swing. Gray showcased a short swing while staying inside the baseball. Behind the plate, Gray showed an accurate arm, while throwing a top pop time of a 2.65.
