True Sophomore. Formerly ranked No. 47 in Illinois’ 2021 class. Standing 6-foot-1, 205-pounds, strong-bodied southpaw with a developed lower-half. Cox was noticeably more fluid with his delivery and more relaxed on scout day than during the Puma Classic. With a drop/drive delivery he worked his fastball in the 88-91 mph range, topping out at 92 mph (T2238 RPM) with slight sinking action. Slider looks to be an out-pitch for him, working with late action off a 2/8 plane at 76-79 mph (T2605 RPM), showing control over the zone and kept mostly down. Flashed a cutting changeup at 81-83 mph.
2022 Puma Classic: Physical-bodied lefty with high effort delivery and head dunk. Overthrowing 87-89 mph FB, struggled to find the zone.
Verbally committed to Central Florida.
2019 Future Games: 6-foot-1, 195-pound, physical, strong build, durable lower half, left-handed pitcher. One of the top available 2021 left-handed pitchers in the state. Works fast, easy, repeatable, clean drop and drive delivery. Short arm action, quick out front, ¾ slot. Attacked the bottom of the strike zone with his fastball. Late arm-side-run, occasional sink, sat 83-85 mph, touched 86. Mixed in an advanced slider, thrown aggressively with late 2/8 action, 76-78 mph. Struck out two and did not allow a hit in his first one-inning appearance on the week. High-follow durable, left-handed pitcher.
6-foot-1, 195-pound left-handed pitcher, highly athletic frame and actions, projects. Present pitchability, clean delivery, leg lifted balance, level shoulders, works slightly across body, toe strikes even, athletic finish with rhythm throughout. Arm has some length on back side, loose and quick out front, clean high ¾ window, effort is easy. Three pitch mix in the zone, above average stuff with arm speed on all. Fastball, mostly straight with slight run, gets tilt down in the zone, comes out firm, sat 82-85 mph. Curveball, tight spin, power 2/8 break with conviction, 78-82 mph. Changeup, deceptive hard fade and sink off the heater, 77-80 mph.
Cox has a durable frame that features wide, broad shoulders, and looks like he may become a workhorse-type arm in the future. The big southpaw was 80-83 early on with an effectively-wild fastball. He struggled at times to find his high ¾ release point, clearing his head towards the third base side, but when it was on time, it was easy to see the promise that he holds. The arm works continuously and with quickness out front where there is a slight head-whack. His slider was thrown more firmly with shorter break at 73-75.
Cox is a strong 6-foot 195-pound left-handed hitting first baseman and left-handed pitcher in Illinois' 2021 class. He ran a 7.59 60 and a 4.75 home to first. He has an 85 mph exit velocity. At the plate, starts slightly open, small leg lift with some hand load, level path through the zone, loose hands, one handed finish, middle of the field line drives during batting practice, flashing pull side power. On the infield, 83 mph positional velocity, three quarters arms lot, quick to the ball with footwork, athletic actions, mostly accurate throws. On the mound, Cox is a strong 6-foot 195-pound left-handed pitcher in Illinois’ 2021 class. Cox has a high three quarter arm slot, high leg lift, controlled temp with in line direction, throws with regular effort and loose arm action, fastball at 82-84 mph, some with arm side run, breaking ball has 2-to-8 shape, 72-74 mph, works down in the zone, sharp action, change up at 77-78 throws with near fastball arm speed, throws for a strike, simple and repeatable.
