A fifth-year senior and occasional spot starter prior to the 2021 season, lefthander Guerrero began the year as Indiana State’s ace due to an early injury to Tristan Weaver and hasn’t looked back since. Listed at 6-foot, 240-pounds, Guerrero has taken his physical conditioning more seriously during his college career and much of his success this season is attributed to the development of an 82-83 mph cutter. The cutter – which cuts away from left handed hitters and in on the hands of righthanders – helps keep batters off of his 85-88 mph fastball, which obviously doesn’t blow batters away but plays up due to his pinpoint command. He drives off the mound well with his lower half and it looks like he’s playing darts at times by how well he’s able to move the ball around the zone. He also commands an upper-70s changeup and a 72-74 mph curveball well, with the change showing good dive and the curve being of more of the short/soft breaking variety, using his breaking ball more the second and third time through the batting order. In this outing, a win over Illinois State, he gave up a two-run home run to the fourth batter he faced. He never got rattled, however, and got into a groove from that point forward to give the Sycamore lineup an opportunity to battle back, which they did. Guerrero struck out five in 8 1/3 innings and moved to 6-0 on the year.
3.18.16 - Indiana State commit. Currently ranked No. 74 in the Illinois Class of 2016. 6-foot, 220-pound left-handed pitcher with a compact frame. Got the start and worked two innings for Metamora. Works from a high ¾ arm angle with a loose, clean arm action. Fastball worked down in the zone at 84-86 mph on a brutally cold day.
3.31.14 - Ranked No. 56 in Illinois’ 2016 class. 5-foot-11, 220-pound left-hander. High-3/4 slot, solid feel for three pitches, strike thrower. Fastball sat at 82-83 in relief stint. Throws curveball for strikes, in 66-68 range. Curveball is go-to pitch.
9.29.13 High-follow prospect in the 2015 class. 5-foot-11, 220-pound left handed pitcher commands three pitches for strikes. Throws from a high ¾ slot with a loose, easy arm action. Repeats delivery, lands open, creating significant arm-side run on 79-82 mph fastball. Breaking ball has a 2/8 shape with solid break, sitting 68-70 mph from the wind and 64-67 mph from the stretch. Changeup was thrown with deceptive arm action, sitting 72-74 mph, with arm side run.
