Currently ranked No. 41 in the class of 2025 rankings for the state of Illinois, RHP/INF Madden Johnson (Mattoon, 2025) impressed on the mound Tuesday. Johnson’s fastball sat 81-83 mph with armside run. His slider had sweeping action to it at times that landed for strikes, and his changeup had armside run and was located at the bottom of the zone.
4/28/23
Lean 6-foot, 140-pound frame with plenty of physical projection to come. Drew the start against Mt. Vernon in a non-conference matchup in this look. Quick and simple tall/fall type delivery, stays upright throughout and strides across his body with some effort through release. Fast, athletic ¾ slot with arm speed out front. Fastball sat 82-84 mph, touching 85 mph a few times in the second inning, and played mostly straight, while favoring the glove-side corner. Featured a tight slider with late break at 72-74 mph, confident and capable of throwing it in all counts to both handed hitters. Flashed a fading changeup at 73-74 mph with some feel to spot it down in the zone. A high-follow arm in the state’s 2025 class that’s seemingly just scratching the surface of what his ultimate ceiling is.
8/10/22
RHP/INF Madden Johnson (Mattoon, 2025) popped as an upside follow in the state’s incoming sophomore class. A highly projectable 6-foot, 141-pound athlete with lanky levers, Johnson easily produced low-80s velocity with his fastball, topping at 84 mph, and there’s certainly more to come as he continues to physically mature. Johnson’s confidence and conviction to spin his slider at any point in the count stood out; a pitch that sat 72-75 mph with lateral action at nearly 15 inches of horizontal movement on average. At the plate, he has an athletic left-handed swing that stays short and inside the baseball. Johnson has a feel to hit and can use the whole field.

Johnson came away a winner on the mound from Tuesday’s event. The 6-foot, 141-pound right-hander has room in his frame to add on strength as he continues to mature and already shows the ability to repeat his athletic delivery down the mound. With a loose/quick arm from a ¾ release, Johnson worked his fastball up to 82 mph, cruising in the 80-81 mph range with life through the zone and arm-side running action at times. He went to a sharp slider for his breaking ball, playing with slurvy shape and depth at 68-70 mph. His final offering was a changeup that he kept mostly down in the zone, fading to his arm-side from a slightly lower slot than his fastball at times, 69-71 mph. Johnson also impressed as a position player showing an upside left-handed swing that stays flat and long through the zone. The ball comes off his bat better than his frame would indicate and he ran a 7.48 60-yard dash.
