10.11.15 - 6-foot-4, 170-pound right-handed pitcher, long slender frame, projectable build. Easy delivery, simple and repeatable. Clean loose arm action, high ¾ slot. Fastball had life to it, arm side action, 82-84 mph, touched 85. Curveball has 11/5 shape, flashed sharp action, control of the zone, 71-73 mph, showed feel. Changeup is firm and thrown with confidence, advanced action, plays up with good feel and arm speed, 77-78 mph.
5.19.15 - Lanky 6-foot-4, 170-pound right-handed pitcher, ranked No. 131 in Illinoisâ 2016 class, impressed with three-pitch mix in complete game outing. Only one of two runs was earned, allowed five hits and one walk. Fastball sat mostly 80-83 mph throughout outing, touching 84 mph. Works from long, high ¾ arm slot, slight stab in back of arm swing, toe down at balance point, works from the first base side of the rubber, strides slightly across his body, but works in line with home plate. Breaking ball varied in shape and velocity, possibly throwing both curveball and slider. Slower curveball sat 65-68 mph, 11/5 shape. Also threw another version, not quite a slider, but sat in the 70-73 mph range. Changeup ranged from 74-76 mph, thrown aggressively, showed split-type action at times, diving down in the zone late. Recorded two swinging strikeouts with the pitch. With added weight and strength Newton could see his velocity climb in the upcoming year. His frame and feel for three pitches are intriguing.
