Mazzaferro

Mazzaferro is an exciting 2-way prospect out of the Ontario Astros organization that showed well on both sides of the ball at the Junior Future Games. On the mound, he got the start in Game 2 action, and he came out of the gate working up to 85 mph with an athletic delivery and quick arm, before settling in at 80-83. He uses a sharp 2-plane breaking-ball that makes for some uncomfortable ABs for rightys. In the box, there’s feel to hit with rhythm and timing, DJ added multiple pull-side hits to his resume down in Georgia. The swing has really developed over the past year and it has shown with more consistency in game this year. Look for DJ to continue to trend upwards and be near the top of the top 2026 prospects in the province.

While it may not have been the best we’ve seen from Mazzaferro this year, his athleticism and overall actions on the diamond continue to stand out each time we see him. He moves well in all areas of his game with arm strength that translates to the mound. The Ontario Prospects product worked one inning on the mound with a fastball that sat 79-82mph and coupled it with a breaking ball at 65-68. He was heavy on the fastball during the outing and was efficient, despite working deep into counts. The right-handed bat has some adjustments to make as he begins to take more AB’s against higher-velocity arms but there’s looseness in the swing and consistently puts up quality at-bats. All the tools and abilities are there for Mazzaferro and he really has a chance to pop when it all comes together.

Physical: 5-10, 160 pounds; Average, lean build.

Offensively: RHH. Even setup, with feet just outside his shoulders; upright bat position. Short take back with the hands with a slight leg-kick for timing. Stays behind the ball while showing an average effort from the legs. Showed a direct swing path with a two handed finish.  More flyballs than line drives and groundballs with a peak exit velocity of 85 MPH via Trackman.

Defensively: Starts with an upright /tall setup; walks into ready position while showing active feet. Hands are out in front while funneling to the hip before transfer. Moderate arm circle from a standard 3/4 arm slot. INF - 82 MPH.

Pitching: Uses a glove side setup working primarily from the stretch. Belt high leg drive with a slight lean over the belt. Has a short stride landing inline with the plate. Moderate arm swing while showing some scap load; standard 3/4 slot. Upright with finish. FB: Peak velo of 83 MPH, while sitting 79-82 MPH; life through the zone. CB: 64-68 MPH; showed depth.

2026 SS/RHP DJ Mazzaferro was one of the top 2026s at the event and flashed his upside at the dish, on the infield and on the mound. The right-handed hitter put together one of the best rounds of BP with consistent line drive contact and quick-twitch actions. Had the top line drive at 66%, found the barrel 77% of the time with a peak exit velocity of 89.8mph and distance of 323ft. Athleticism and range at the shortstop position with arm strength across the diamond. Fastball sat 83-84mph and fills up the zone. Has really refined his offspeed stuff since the fall with feel for the curveball and changeup. One of the top 2026 prospects in Ontario.

Mazzaferro, had one of the better pitching performances on the day going 2 innings with 4 K’s. Athletic mover with intent, a strong front leg and a quick arm sitting 80-82 with more to come. He had good feel for his breaking-ball buckling hitters. Top 10 prospect in Ontario continues to show his upside on both sides of the ball.

Mazzaferro, 5-foot-10, 160-pounds, showed a ton of upside in the box. The hands stood out working quick through the ball. Stayed on plane until contact, worked up the middle to pull side with the majority of his hits being on a line. Does not get cheated in the box and will be a player to keep an eye on as one of top 2026 bats.

Mazzaferro had a good start for the 15u Ontario Prospects squad Tuesday night in Oshawa inducing soft contact. FB was around the zone and he got his CB going in his 2nd inning, freezing hitters for K’s. He flashed a couple change ups that showed some fade. Mazzaferro has an athletic build and there is definitely more in the tank. He will be a close follow going forward in the 2025 class.

Mazzaferro, a 5-foot-10, 140-pound uncommitted 2025 SS/RHP for the Ontario Prospects showed a lot of upside on both sides of the field. In the infield the feet moved well with a long loose arm and good carry on his throws. At the plate the hands are quick and aggressive, and doesn’t get cheated. Lived mostly pull side on his round with an exit velo topping 85Mph. On the mound Mazzaferro impressed with good command on all his pitches. Fastball will attack hitters living low in the zone, the curveball was tight and had good depth on it and a changeup that showed some arm side run to it. Will be a name to watch as the body continues to fill out.
