7/26/23

Physical: Big strength in a wide 6-foot-1, 228-pound frame. 7.26 runner in the 60-yard dash.

Offensively: RHH. Taller, balanced stance with some pre-pitch hand rhythm. Utilized a toe-tap stride to initiate the swing through a fluid, slightly uphill path into the hitting zone. Accelerated well towards a violent finish, allowing for early separation and bat-speed to close the gap. Led #TeamPA in EV at T99MPH and worked up to a 385FT max distance to LCF.

Defensively: The first baseman showed off adequate feel around the bag with a soft funnel. Quality hips for size and got rid from a shorter ¾ slot when needed at 84MPH. Added an inside move on the double-play rep with a recovery back in time.

Pitching: RHP. Smail closed out Game 1 and touched 87MPH from a quicker tempo. Really maintained the hinge when driving down the mound and created life out of the sleeve (21 inch IVB). Wrinkled in a hard, lateral SL with 19 inch of HM to glove-side, spinning at 2202 rpms.

10/01/22

Physical: Some of the top raw power in the class at 6-foot-1, 228lbs. 7.53 runner in the 60.

Offensively: RHH. Slightly open, crouched stance, as the hands start from a strong position. Utilized a toe-tap stride to initiate the swing through an uphill path into the hitting zone with swivel over the rear hip. Did plenty of damage on the middle/in pitch, explosive at the contact window for a T99 mph exit velocity via Trackman. Worked up to a 337 foot distance and added a 43% barrel rate.

Defensively: The first baseman featured choppy actions around the bag and funneled softly off of the middle of his body. Wider base, which allowed for some balance, reaching back for a 79 mph infield arm (H ¾). Used a drop-step technique on double plays.

Pitching: RHP. Begins off the left corner of the rubber; repeatable delivery with lower-half drive down the mound. Still getting back to 100%, held 76-79, T80 mph on a heavy FB, mixing a sweeping 68-70 mph SL across the plate. Quality feel for a CH into the low-70’s for strikes.

6/14/22

Physical: Thick, broad-shouldered 6-foot-1, 228lb frame. 7.20 runner in the 60-yard dash.

Offensively: RHH. Balanced, even stance with repeated pre-swing movement in the hands. Utilized a leg-hang stride to initiate the swing through a fluid, whippy path into the hitting zone towards a one-handed finish. Produced plenty of leverage at the front of the plate and did damage to the pull-side gap, up to a 93 mph exit velocity and 345 foot distance. Middle of the order type, well-connected attack with burst available.

Defensively: The first baseman operated under control with a soft glove hand and adequate feel in either direction. Settled down at a wider base, fielding off the middle of his body while delivering an 83 mph throw from H ¾ slot.

Pitching: RHP. Starts off the left side; compact delivery with late pace down the mound. Strong arm produces some power downhill at times, ranging 80-83, T84 mph on the FB. Mixed developing 68-71 mph SL with occasional two-plane tilt. Going to add velo soon.

7/28/21

Physical: Strong, powerful 6-foot, 225lb frame with highly capable movements; 7.73 runner in the 60-yard dash.

Offensively: RHH - Upright, narrow and open stance as the hands operated in-rhythm to start. Utilized a toe-tap stride on-time with a barrel tip, initiating the bat head through a whippy, slightly uphill path into the hitting zone. Generated a lot of juice through the lower half, connecting to the ground and adjusting depth based on pitch quadrant. Mature hitter that did a lot of damage during his BP round with some separation in the swing. Produced a T91 mph bat-exit velocity with obvious middle of the order projection (313 foot batted ball distance, 46% line drive rate, 69% sweet spot via Trackman).

Defensively: The first baseman arrived on-time with right left footwork to the ball. Slightly outside shoulder-width base as the glove hand gave softly at the fielding window. Worked hips/shoulders around the ball and released from a H ¾ slot (82 mph arm).

Pitching: RHP - Started off the glove side of the rubber with a slightly shallow leg lift to the stack position; used some hip coil to hide the ball, driving with a thick lower half down the slope towards a stiff, blocked off front-side. H ¾ slot and able to repeat the actions with clean timing on hand-break. The FB ranged from 83-85 mph at T2286 rpms, mixing a sharp T2400rpms SL up to 8 inches of HM (via Trackman). One-two punch and added a CH on occasion in the mid 70’s.

6/22/21

Physical: 6-foot-0, 225 pounds; Athletic, sturdy build. 7.4 runner in the 60.

Offensively: RHH. Open setup, with feet shoulder width apart; upright bat position. Short take back with the hands with a slight leg-kick for timing. Drifts into contact while showing a strong lower half. Showed a short swing path with a one-handed finish.  More flyballs than line drives and groundballs with a peak exit velocity of 90 MPH via Trackman.

Defensively: Starts with an upright /tall setup; walks into ready position while laid back. Hands are off to the side while standing up during transfer. Short take back  from a high 3/4 arm slot.   OF - 84 MPH.

Pitching: Smail uses a glove side setup while using an angled drop step. Minimal leg lift with a slight coil away from the plate. Has a moderate stride while landing closed. Short take back while arm stays in line with 2B, while working through a high 3/4 slot. Square to the plate with finish. FB: Peak velo of 85 MPH, while sitting 82-83 MPH; plays up in the zone.  SL: 75-76 MPH; late action.

7/30/20

Physical: Strong, well put together 5-foot-11, 195-pound frame with advanced physicality throughout the build. 7.58 runner in the 60-yard dash. Offensively: RHH. Was easily the most advanced offensive performer at the Jr. Future Games. Extremely mature approach at the plate for his age. The righty started from a tall, slightly open stance with plenty of rhythm in the hands pre-load. Utilized a controlled lift and replace stride allowing the hands to launch through a fluid, uber-efficient flat path into the hitting zone. Had no issues lifting the ball with authority to all fields and displayed sink into a powerful lower half generating loud contact at the front of the plate with legitimate home run pop to the pull-side. Recorded a peak bat-exit velocity of 88 mph according to Trackman Baseball / 346 max batted ball distance / 60% line drive rate. Hit two home runs in game action at the Jr. Future Games; a grand slam and three-run shot. Defensively: The primary outfielder showed long movements during defensive evaluations with a methodical, downhill pace in which he was timing up fielding the baseball off of the left foot on the approach. Adequate feel for transfers and a live, high ¾ arm-slot from a lengthy arm circle. Stayed behind the baseball well in the air keeping momentum. OF - 75 mph Pitching: RHP - Started from the left side of the rubber with a moderate pace throughout the delivery, side rocker step into a repeatable medium leg lift, good drive through a strong backside, landed directional towards the target with solid posture, high ¾ arm-slot on the release with minor downhill plane. Commanded a 76-77 mph FB with an upwards of 2051 spin per Trackman Baseball, mixed in a sharp 63-65 mph breaker with late 11/5 depth and swing and miss ability.

6/29/20

Physical: 5-foot-11, 192 pounds; strong, sturdy frame. 7.52 runner in the 60. Offensively: RHH. Slightly open shoulder width stance with bat waggle; short take back, small stride. Strong effortless lower half with slight lift with quick hands. Middle to pull side approach; peak Trackman exit velocity of 93 MPH. Defensively: Upright; laid back with fluid movements. seamless transfer; long arm swing with standard 3/4 slot. OF - 76 MPH.
