2/9/14 - Large frame, extra-long, slender build, 6-foot-4, 175-pound left handed pitcher. Delivery had a slightly quicker tempo and shorter leg lift than previously seen, repeated it well with quicker tempo. Showed fastball command, especially well to arm side, has slight run with late action, finishes well at 82-83 mph touched 84 mph. Changeup has arm side run, excellent action, 74-77 mph. Slider showed signs of high level pitch, 73-76 mph, aggressive arm action. Lackney is still one of the more projectable arms in the state. Combine his left handed arm, athleticism and size and Lackney becomes a rare commodity.
8/4/13 - Lackney is one of the more projectable left handed pitchers in the class. He is a lanky 6-foot-4, 165-pound southpaw with a high ceiling. We have seen Lackney show arm strength up to 87 mph from the outfield, although he looks to be more of a pitcher at the next level, it speaks to the type of velocity that he has the potential to bring to the mound. Previous to the Midwest Future Games we’ve seen his best fastball at 82 mph. At the Midwest Future games Lackney showed more of that outfield arm strength coming out on the mound as he reached 85 mph and pitched comfortably at 82-83. His long lean frame has obviously grown at a quicker pace than most of his peers and it seems as though he might be hitting his stride of growing into his frame and getting the feel and timing of his delivery. Lackney also showed excellent command of the baseball working down in the zone in his two innings of work. I would look for Lackney to continue making these jumps as he matures and grows into his frame.
1/27/13 - Long, lanky frame, long thin limbs, 6-foot-4, 165-pound left handed two way player. One of the top pitchers in his class, very projectable athlete. Projects well on the mound, delivery shows regular effort, lacks repeatability, tall and fall approach, shoulders and landing stay closed. Arm works from high ¾ arm slot, quick arm action, long and loose. Fastball has control, 81-82 mph, features hard run. Curveball lacked feel, loose rotation, flashed late bite, 70-72 mph. Changeup showed action, some cut, some sink, 69-71 mph, lacked feel. Defensively attacked the baseball well from the outfield, arm played well, 87 mph, showed carry. Offensively hits from the left side, open stance, good balance throughout. Hits with high elbow, shows some pop, occasional barrel whip.
3-5-2018: Junior Nick Lackney is a tall, long bodied LHP with an 89-92 fastball. Extra long strider who gets good extension out front from a high release point. I’m not Trackman, but it looks he combines extension and release height at an elite level. He also lands well closed, producing cross fire to his delivery and a tough look to the hitters. Also threw a 82-85 cutter shaped slider. (Seifert)
