Prep Baseball Report's IA Preseason All-State event took place on Sunday, March 11, 2018. The event was held at SportsPlex West in Waukee, IA. The event featured prospects from the 2019, 2020 and 2021 grad classes. Players showcased their talents in front of our scouting staff and college coaches. 

There were a number of great individual performances this year at the IA Preseason All-State

As we drill down into the statistics:

+   36 players ran sub-7.2 60's.
+   56 players recorded 85+ mph exit velocities
+   33 players recorded 80+ mph infield throws
+   19 players recorded 80+ mph outfield throws
+   25 catchers recorded 70+ mph throws to second base
+   16 catchers recorded sub-2.1 pop times
+   48 pitchers were 80+ mph on the mound

Jack Allison, 3B/RHP, Southeast Polk, 2020
5-foot-11, 180-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. 7.7 runner. Balanced athletic stance, choppy leg kick trigger, rhythm in hands, above avg. round of bp, consistent hard contact, drives baseball with authority, 84 mph exit velocity. Shows good hands and feet, works low to round, soft glove, accurate arm, projectable build that should continue to grow with solid present strength, 81 mph arm across infield. On mound; athletic high tuck and turn balance point, shows tempo and rhythm in delivery, long arm action, front side tip hides baseball, shows quickness out front. Fastball was 79-81 mph with quality run and sink. Arm action is inconsistent on breaking ball currently. Shows good feel for changeup with above avg. fade in bottom of zone.

Cory Anderson, SS/RHP, Wilton, 2019
5-foot-9, 150-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. #56 player in Iowa 2019 rankings. 7.21 runner. Balance set-up, hand load, stiff lower half with straight legs, line drive swing plane, consistent ground ball contact to pull side of field, 75 mph exit velocity. Aggressive first step, high fielding position, tends to glove baseball underneath body, works around and through baseball, accurate to bag, 81 mph arm across infield. On mound; short rocker step, kicks leg up into balance point, slight hitch in delivery, lands across body, short arm action with deception. Fastball was 80-83 mph with late running action to plate. Best pitch is slider, lands consistently for strikes, with late short break and tight rotation. Shows avg. feel and action on changeup.

Luke Anderson, LHP/1B, Central Dewitt, 2020
6-foot-2, 180-pound left-handed hitting 2-way player. Projectable build. On mound; controlled tempo on mound, front shoulder tilt, long clean arm action, lands inline to catcher. High ¾ arm slot, works baseball downhill, with occasional cut action at 78-81 mph. Late cut action on changeup for strikes. Breaking ball has 1/7 shape with sweeping action to plate. Overall commands zone well and is strike thrower with three pitches. 8.06 runner, square stance, small stride to square, toe raise trigger, stiffer hands, pushes through zone, works middle of field, solid rate of contact, line drive approach, 82 mph exit velocity.

Alex Bantam, RHP/3B, Woodbine, 2019
6-foot-3, 190-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. On mound; short rocker step, rolls into medium balance point, pie arm action. Fastball was 76-77 mph with varying action to plate. Solid depth on 11/5 breaking ball with avg. spin. Solid feel for zone with flat elevated changeup. 7.91 runner. Square stance, slight weight shift, rolling hand load into lower hitting slot, line drive hitter, consistently squared baseball during bp, mid/away approach with above avg. rate of contact, 84 mph exit velocity. Avg. actions, tall fielding position, accurate to bag with carry on throws, 80 mph arm across infield.

Jacob Barton, OF/LHP, Waukee, 2021
5-foot-10, 150-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. 7.2 runner. Square stance, body load, large leg kick trigger, lower hand slot, inconsistent timing and contact, ground balls off bat, mid/pull approach, 76 mph exit velocity. Long athletic actions in field, sure hands, moves well in field, clean arm action, shows carry and accuracy to target, 77 mph arm strength from outfield. On mound; long loose ¾ arm action, lands inline with catcher. Fastball was 72-75 mph with solid arm-side running action. Has feel for 2/8 breaking ball with consistent shape and depth. Avg. fade on changeup with floating action to plate.

Carter Bell, SS/RHP, Bettendorf, 2019
5-foot-10, 175-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. #11 player in Iowa 2019 rankings. Lean with wiry strength. Above avg. multi-sport athlete. 6.78 runner. Tall stance, leg kick trigger, rhythm in hands, loose swing, easy effort, consistent hard line drive contact, works middle of field, 86 mph exit velocity. Sure hands and is athletic in field, avg/solid actions that will develop with reps, lower arm slot across, 82 mph arm strength. On mound; fast pace with simple delivery, quiet actions, ball jumps out of hand, high percentage of strikes. Fastball shows late varying action at 81-83 mph; in season was documented 85-87 mph. 11/5 breaking ball has tight spin with late sharp break, consistent shape, with above avg. ability to throw for strikes. Has feel for zone with firm changeup.

Ethan Bernard, SS/RHP, Council Bluffs St. Albert, 2019
6-foot-1, 175-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. Lean athletic frame. 7.09 runner. Square stance, choppy rhythm in leg kick trigger and load, solid contact when on time and extended, groundball contact, works middle of field, 90 mph exit velocity. Athletic in field, solid footwork, works around and through baseball, some raw actions, has good tool set, and should to continue to develop, 84 mph arm across infield. On mound; rocker step into high balance point, slight rock in posture, athletic down mound, good arm speed, lands inline and closed to catcher. Fastball is thrown with minimal effort, drives ball downhill, ball jumps out of hand, with straight action at 78-80 mph. Breaking ball is inconsistent; but flashes solid 11/5 shape and spin. Cut action on changeup, lacks present feel for pitch, but is athletic enough and should improve with reps.

Reece Beuter, 3B/RHP, Dike-New Hartford, 2020
6-foot, 175-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. 7.28 runner. Square stance, slight crouch, rhythm in hands, compact swing, line drive approach, present strength, 90 mph exit velocity. Shows arm strength, heavier feet, raw fielding mechanics, 84 mph arm across infield. On mound; rocker step, travels across rubber, foot tuck underneath body, side-ways arm path, lands inline with catcher, solid extension out front. Fastball was 80-81 mph, touching 84 mph, with flashes of late running action. 11/5 curveball has tight spin with small break. Changeup is flat with occasional fade and slight running action.

Zachary Bierman, LHP, Western Dubuque, 2019
6-foot-1, 180-pound left-handed pitcher. Came into event as #33 ranked player in Iowa 2019 class. Has made quality velo jump over last 12 months. Steps in front to turn hips into medium balance point, strength in lower half, stays over rubber, clean compact arm action, has direction and momentum down mound, with arm speed out front. Fastball was 85-87 mph, touching 89 mph once, with slight running action and solid feel for zone. Breaking ball is above avg., tilted plane with sweeping sharp brake, 1/7 shape, and thrown with solid arm speed. Commands changeup well to arm-side of plate with solid fading action.

Hunter Brown, RHP, Southeast Polk, 2021
6-foot-4, 160-pound right-handed pitcher. Tall lanky build. Uptempo delivery, average body control, compact arm action, lands inline with catcher. Interesting frame and should continue to develop. Fastball was 74-76 mph, occasional downhill plane, with running action to plate. Solid depth on breaking ball, has feel for zone, lands consistently for strikes. Solid fade on changeup, lands for strikes, tends to slow arm occasionally.

Kyle Burns, OF/RHP, Sioux City East, 2019
6-foot, 190-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. Physical frame with present strength. 7.25 runner. Easy body load, consistent hard contact, strength in swing, short to contact, repeats swing well, one of best b.p.’s during event, gap to gap approach, 86 mph exit velocity. Aggressive fielder, works through ball, longer release on throws occasionally, follows throws to target, solid accuracy and carry, 82 mph arm strength from outfield. On mound; short rocker step, swings into back turn at balance point, drop and drive down mound, lands slightly across body. Short arm action producing 75-78 mph fastballs with flat action and occasional run. Solid/avg. 11/5 breaking ball with consistent shape and spin. Tends to slow arm speed on changeup creating stiffness and flat action.

Drew Callon, LHP, Fort Dodge, 2019
5-foot-11, 145-pound left-handed pitcher. Strong follow in class and will make significant jump into IA 2019 rankings. Bow and arrow arm action, delivers from lower ¾ slot, arm out front is clean and works through zone quickly with good hand speed. Above avg. command of strike zone with 81-82 mph fastball. Breaking ball has tight spin with late sharp break. Changeup is thrown for strikes at fastball arm speed. As he continues to mature physically and add strength, look for Callon’s velocity to make significant jumps, to go along with present feel and projectable arm action.

Tom Casey, 3B/RHP, Dubuque Senior, 2020
6-foot-2, 170-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. 7.49 runner. Square athletic stance, rhythm in hands, above avg. round of bp, consistently squared baseball, some stiffness with 2 hand follow through, shows ability to hit line drives to all fields, 85 mph exit velocity. Easy actions, solid athleticism, sure hands, fields deep into body occasionally, accurate arm with solid carry to bag, 83 mph arm strength across infield. On mound; short rocker step, stays over rubber, athletic tuck and turn balance point, clean compact arm action from OT slot. Lands on stiff front leg disrupting rhythm; creates effort and hitch in delivery. Flashes of life on fastball, 82-83 mph, with slight running action to plate. Solid spin and shape on 11/5 breaking ball; consistently landing for strikes. Shows feel for changeup with solid action on pitch.

Tucker Christensen, RHP/SS, Norwalk, 2020
6-foot, 170-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. On mound; athletic frame with strength in lower half, controlled rocker step into balance point, begins to build momentum throughout delivery, athletic compact arm action, explosive down mound, solid extension and finish to plate, arm is extremely quick out front. Fastball was 83-84 mph with life; showing varying action to both sides of the plate. Slider is thrown with above avg. arm speed; creating tight spin and solid 11/5 shape. Flashes above avg. changeup, has arm speed, lands in bottom of zone with solid fade. 7.4 runner. Open stance, easy load and stride, minimal effort in swing, some scoop in swing plane, ball jumps occasionally off bat, works middle of field, 82 mph exit velocity. Above avg. arm, carry and accuracy, solid/avg. actions, sure hands, 91 mph arm strength across the infield. Strong follow in 2020 class.

Mac Conrad, OF/RHP, Sigourney, 2019
6-foot-1, 195-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. 7.52 runner. Present strength, shoulder load, clean path, inconsistent timing, out front at contact, solid ground ball contact, mid/pull approach, 81 mph exit velocity. Works through ball, sure hands, confident fielder, compact arm action, solid tools and actions, accurate to target, 82 mph arm strength from outfield. On mound; longer rocker step, high leg kick delivery, short ¾ arm action, stiffer extension out front. Commands strike zone well to arm-side with 77-79 mph fastball. Changeup has solid sinking action and is thrown for strikes. Sharper break on curveball with avg. feel for strikes.

Charlie Corell, RHP/3B, Dowling Catholic, 2021
6-foot-1, 170-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. On mound; short rocker step, stays over rubber, medium balance point, lands slightly across body, controlled delivery. Short pie arm action producing 78-79 mph fastballs with slight running action. Shows solid shape and depth on 11/5 breaking ball. Flashes run and sink; works bottom of zone well with feel for changeup. 7.52 runner. Physical frame. Square stance, small stride, heel turn trigger, compact swing, short to contact, works middle of field, flashes hard line drive and fly ball contact, 80 mph exit velocity. Stiffer fielding actions, tends to be flat footed at times, short arm action, accurate to bag, 78 mph arm strength across infield.

Bryce Crabb, SS/RHP, Des Moines East, 2019
6-foot-3, 160-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. 7.31 runner. Open stance, drops hands into lower slot, line drive swing plane, flashes pop in bat when extended through contact, 81 mph exit velocity. Solid athlete, fields with feet close together, sure hands, interesting follow with continued development, 78 mph arm across infield. On mound; uptempo delivery, short balance point, shows body control, long arm action, delivers from ¾ slot. Late run and sink on fastball at 80-82 mph. Solid/avg. shape and spin on breaking ball for strikes. Above avg. feel for changeup with fade in bottom of zone.

Logan Crannell, LHP, ADM, 2019
6-foot-1, 168-pound left-handed pitcher. Projectable frame with longer legs and solid present lean strength. Stretch only, leg kick with tempo, easy effort in delivery, some hitch in stride leg creates deception. Long loose arm action, ¾ slot, fills strike zone with quality 82-84 mph fastball with late running action. Changeup is firm and heavy with late run. Consistently throws breaking ball for strikes with sweeping action. Will make significant jump into Iowa 2019 rankings once updated.

Jacob Craven, RHP/SS, Ogden, 2019
5-foot-11, 150-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. #61 player in Iowa 2019 rankings. On mound; rocker step into slight tuck and turn balance point, longer arm action, high ¾ slot, upright on release. Fastball shows flashes of life with late run and sink at 81-82 mph. Above avg. hand speed on breaking ball; has high spin and sharp break when released out front. Running action on changeup; tends to leave up in zone. 7.4 runner. Open stance, body load, high hand set, high short finish, lift in swing plane, consistently on time, squares baseball with mid/pull approach, 84 mph exit velocity. Good footwork in field, works through ball, soft hands, lower arm slot, solid actions, accurate to bag, 77 mph arm across infield.

Mason Crow, OF/LHP, Sioux Falls O’Gorman (SD), 2019
6-foot-2, 208-pound left-handed hitting 2-way player. Physical frame with present strength. 7.19 runner. Balanced setup, slight body and hand load, drives baseball to pull-side with authority, clean path, consistently squares baseball, has power projection in frame and swing, 87 mph exit velocity. Solid arm action, can be uncontrolled at times in field, projects physically with solid athleticism, 81 mph arm strength from outfield. On mound; controlled delivery, long and loose arm action, cross-fire delivery landing towards first base side. Slight cutting action on fastball at 76-78 mph. Above avg. curveball with sweeping break for strikes. Slows arm occasionally on changeup with slight run and fade.

Jace Davidson, LHP, Pocahontas, 2019
6-foot-2, 180-pound left-handed pitcher. #54 player in Iowa 2019 rankings. Rocker step, early hand break, hides ball behind body, high ¾ arm slot. Works fastball on downhill plane at 80-82 mph with solid/avg. feel for zone. Straight action with flashes of fade on changeup. Solid depth on 1/7 breaking ball for strikes. Stays in and around zone with three pitches for strikes.

Christian Davidson, RHP/SS, Pocahontas, 2021
6-foot, 145-pound left-handed hitting 2-way pitcher. On mound; short turn, balanced over rubber, solid athleticism and tempo in delivery, slight hitch down mound, lands inline to catcher, clean compact arm action, has extension and finish to plate. Fastball was 75-76 mph with flashes of run and sink. 11/5 curveball has early shape and break to plate. Above avg. fade on changeup thrown with quality arm action. 7.17 runner. Closed stance, leg kick trigger, crouches into hitting position, tends to get stuck on back-side, shows solid line drive contact when transfer weight through, 74 mph exit velocity. Works through ball, sure hands, decent athlete, tends to stop after release, solid accuracy to bag, 72 mph arm strength across infield.

John Doty, RHP/SS, Waukee, 2021
6-foot-1, 165-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. On mound; early tempo in delivery, medium balance point, uncontrolled front foot after strike down mound, short ¾ arm action. Fastball was 78-80 mph; delivered on downhill plane to plate. Solid spin rate on 11/5 breaking ball with depth. Avg. action and feel for changeup. 7.83 runner. Slight open stance, compact swing, easy effort, consistently squared baseball, hard line drive contact to pull side of field, 81 mph exit velocity. Raw actions, moves with short steps, sure hands, above avg. arm strength for age, 82 mph arm across infield.

Ray Ray Douglas, OF/RHP, Sioux City West, 2019
6-foot, 160-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. #22 player in Iowa 2019 class. Lean athletic frame with wiry strength. 7.03 runner. Square stance, leg kick trigger, some looseness and rhythm in hands, falls over plate and loses balance, works to stay on and through baseball, flashes hard line drive contact to mid/pull side of field, 84 mph exit velocity. Above avg. arm, quick with graceful actions, above avg. athleticism, interesting prospect as he continues to fill out frame and gain strength, 92 mph arm strength from outfield. On mound; short rocker step, stays over rubber, long arm action, works up and over front side, shows ability to drive fastball on downhill plate. Fastball was 84-86 mph for strikes with slight varying action to both sides of plate. Has 11/5 shape on curveball with solid ability to land for strikes. Slider has good velocity, more of a cutter, with tight rotation and small shape, sharp break with depth. Average action and feel for changeup thrown hard.

Jackson Fisher, C/RHP, Chariton, 2019
6-foot-2, 160-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. Newcomer to PBR event; will make jump into IA 2019 rankings. Athletic build with wiry strength. 7.08 runner. Wider stance, easy stride to square, slight shoulder load, balanced in box, consistent hard contact to all fields, 92 mph exit velocity. Above avg. carry and accuracy on throws, clean exchange, slight hitch in release, works through plate with momentum, solid receiver, some extra movements, athletic blocker, 78 mph arm strength with 1.98-2.06 pop times. On mound; sideways rocker step, higher athletic balance point, compact arm action, lands slightly across body, good extension and finish to plate. Fastball is straight, shows solid command of zone, at 79-82 mph. Breaking ball has tight spin with small shape. Changeup is thrown hard with avg. action to plate.

Nile Foss, LHP/OF, Carlisle, 2020
5-foot-10, 165-pound left-handed hitting 2-way player. On mound; rocker step, controlled delivery, long front side, hides ball behind body. Fastball jumps on hitter with deception at 78-80 mph. Avg. feel for breaking ball, slider shape, with tendencies to leave arm side. Solid/avg. action on changeup thrown for strikes. 7.51 runner. Open stance, leg kick trigger, easy effort in swing, pull approach, flat path through zone, line drive and ground ball contact, 83 mph exit velocity. Slower pace in field, sure hands, above avg. glove, clean arm action, solid carry and accuracy to target, 78 mph arm from outfield.

Jack Fuchs, RHP/SS, Urbandale, 2020
6-foot, 157-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. On mound; quicker tempo, slight uncontrolled in delivery, medium open balance point, lands inline and open to plate. Short arm action, tends to be underneath fastball, at 74-76 mph with slight early run. Solid shape on 11/5 curveball with early break. Avg. action on fastball; thrown with stiff wrist. 7.55 runner. Square stance, short stride, loads into lower hand set, uphill path, compact swing, spray hitter and works middle of field, 71 mph exit velocity. Under-developed in field, raw actions, tends to play flat footed, makes routine plays, 74 mph arm across infield.

Jayden Gibson, C/RHP, Grinnell, 2019
6-foot, 185-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. Western Illinois commit and #32 player in Iowa 2019 rankings. Lean build with present strength. 7.28 runner. Square stance, body load, compact swing, consistently squared baseball, gap to gap approach, doubles hitter with consistent contact, 88 mph exit velocity. Quick release with avg. direction, consistently around bag, shows solid arm strength, flexible and athletic behind plate, sticks pitches in zone, mobile with ability to block, 78 mph arm strength with 1.95-2.1 pop times. On mound; controlled delivery, stays over rubber, high slight tuck and turn, compact arm action, occasional extension and finish to plate. Fastball was 82-84 mph with flat running action to arm-side of plate. Consistent shape with solid feel for 11/5 breaking ball for strikes. Knuckleball is above avg. with zero spin, solid velocity, and late movement around zone.

Sam Goodman, RHP/SS, Western Dubuque, 2019
6-foot, 160-pound switch hitting 2-way player. #6 player in Iowa 2019 rankings. Wichita State commit. On mound; short rocker step, slight tuck and turn, athletic load/crouch over rubber, hitchy arm action creates deception and disrupts hitters timing. Works extremely fast and overwhelms hitters with high percentage of strikes with three pitches. Fastball was 85-86 mph with life to arm-side of plate. Sweeping break on 10/4 breaking ball with large shape. Solid fade and cut action on changeup. 7.05 runner. Square stance, easy load and stride, crouches into hitting position, flat swing plane, works middle of field, consistent solid contact, 83 mph exit velocity. Athletic in field, light on his feet, sure hands, creates direction on throws, shows actions in field, accurate arm to bag, 87 mph arm across infield.

Blake Grevengoed, SS/RHP, WDM Valley, 2019
6-foot-1, 175-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. #70 player in Iowa 2019 rankings. Developing physically and has added quality strength to frame. 7.06 runner. Body load, quick hands, compact swing, consistently drove baseball to middle of field, easy effort, above avg. round of bp, 87 mph exit velocity. Shows footwork and body control in field, arm plays well, shows actions, accurate to bag with carry, 83 mph arm across infield. On mound; short turn into athletic balance point, high cocked arm action, pie arm slot, with long unraveling arm action. Slight run on fastball delivered at 81-82 mph; with tendencies to miss arm-side. Breaking ball is inconsistent but flashes sharp break and 11/5 shape. Changeup flashes above avg.; has late drop action in bottom of zone; thrown with fastball arm speed. Follow in 2019 class as he continues to develop; has made strong improvements over last year.

Blaine Harpenau, RHP, Remsen St. Mary’s, 2021
5-foot-11, 150-pound right-handed pitcher. Small rocker step into athletic high knee balance point, tuck and turn at top, long arm action, clean path, lands slightly across body, with avg. effort and above avg. extension and finish to plate. Fastball was 80-82 mph, shows good hand speed, and shows life. 11/5 breaking ball has solid shape and depth for strikes. Changeup is thrown with fastball arm speed; has late cut action and is an above avg. pitch. Follow in 2021 class.

Bryce Houser, C/RHP, Lone Tree, 2019
5-foot-8, 170-pound right-handed hitting catcher and pitcher. 7.27 runner. Physical in box, body load with knee to knee trigger, some extra movements create inconsistent timing, hard pull contact, 85 mph exit velocity. Balanced setup, solid actions, raw mechanically but has good attributes and should continue to develop, extra glove movement when receiving, solid blocker, 75 mph arm strength with 2.13-2.25 pop times. On mound; rocker step into short balance point, solid arm speed, ¾ slot, lands inline with extension and finish out front. Fastball was 79-80 mph with varying action and avg. command. Shows feel for zone with sinking action on changeup. 11/5 breaking ball has tight spin with avg. depth for strikes.

Reese Jamison, SS/RHP, Woodward-Granger, 2020
6-foot, 185-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. 7.26 runner. Taller stance, balanced, compact swing, solid bat speed, rotational lower half, ground ball and line drive contact, works middle of field, 88 mph exit velocity. Aggressive routes, sure hands, late glove presentation, slight crow hop, long release on throws, accurate to bag, 78 mph arm across infield. On mound; rolls into medium balance point, medium stride down mound with collapse on back leg. Short arm action producing 77-78 mph fastball with varying action for strikes. Solid 11/5 shape on breaking ball with depth. Solid/avg. action on changeup. Strike thrower on mound with three pitches.

Easton Johnson, C/RHP, Gilbert, 2021
6-foot-2, 175-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. 7.5 runner. Square stance, choppy knee to knee trigger, inverted swing plane, spray contact to mid/pull side of field, avg. barrel control, 81 mph exit velocity. Decent athlete behind plate, raw movements, extra step in footwork, shows arm strength, avg. accuracy to bag, should continue to develop body control with maturity and strength gains, 78 mph arm strength with 2.08-2.16 pop times. On mound; projectable frame, short compact arm action, shows rhythm and body control that will continue to improve with maturity and strength, high ¾ arm slot, repeats well and commands zone. Fastball has running action at 79-81 mph. Changeup is above avg. with heavy run and sink. Solid depth on breaking ball with 11/5 shape.

Chase Keeney, LHP, Cedar Rapids Jefferson, 2019
6-foot, 175-pound left-handed pitcher. #19 ranked player in Iowa 2019 class.
