CRESTWOOD, IL – No. 7 St. Rita hosted Montini at Standard Bank Stadium on Thursday afternoon. Montini pitchers Dan Mallory and Alex Luka combined to 2-hit the Mustangs in the Broncos 2-1 victory.
Mallory worked five plus innings and did not allow a hit to the Mustangs until the top of the sixth inning. Despite only having two hits the Mustangs had plenty of opportunities with men on base as Mallory walked seven in the outing.
Montini got on the board in the top of the second inning when Cooper Hynes singled to leadoff the inning and Nicolas Malik followed up with a single of his own. With one away Alex Luka drove a ball to the left field corner for an RBI single. The Broncos added a run in the fifth on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Jake Karczewski.
The Mustangs finally got some life in the bottom of the sixth when Jake Zylman singled to break up the no hitter and chase Mallory from the game. A fielders choice and an error put runners on second and third with two outs. An errant pickoff throw at second allowed Tyler Woynerowski to score the lone run for the Mustangs.
With two away in the bottom of the seventh Matt Verdun doubled to put the tying run on second. Zylman was next up and hit a ground ball to short, but was called out at first on a bang bang play.
Steven Washilewski took the loss for St. Rita but struck out 12 hitters over 6.2 innings of work.
