Hinsdale Central, Oosterbaan Take Down York

On Monday afternoon, York hosted Hinsdale Central in game one of a three-game West Suburban conference series. Hinsdale Central put up crooked numbers in the first and last inning, and rode the arm of sophomore right-handed pitcher, Ben Oosterbaan, to a 12-4 win.

Oosterbaan was dominant in his four innings of no-hit work, facing one batter over the minimum, due to a walk in the second inning. Other than that, the 6-foot-2, 145-pound, right-hander was perfect, striking out 8 of the 13 batters he faced while not allowing a runner past first base. Oosterbaan showed poise and composure well beyond his sophomore status throughout his start. He works clean and easy down the mound with above-average feel for his fastball/breaking ball repertoire. He routinely pounded the fastball to his glove side and bottom quadrant of the zone getting late sink and run to it at times. The fastball sat mostly 82-85 mph throughout, touching 86. His breaking ball was his go-to secondary offering, routinely dropping it in for strikes early in counts, with the ability to mix the shape/sharpness with two strikes and get chases for swing-and-misses, sat 71-75 mph.

The Red Devils of Hinsdale Central (5-1) gave Oosterbaan a comfortable 4-0 lead after the top of the first inning. The first four batters of the game reached base safely and eventually came around to score; three via a free pass and one on a bunt single by unsigned senior Brian Daker. Lucas Montesantos collected an RBI thanks to a sacrifice fly and Oosterbaan drove in a run via an infield single.

The Red Devils tacked on six more runs in the top of the seventh to break the game open for good. Luke Adams, a junior Michigan State commit, who ended up with two hits in the frame, led off the seventh with a towering home run to deep left-center field. Senior Jake Adams collected a two-run single, while Oosterbaan and Blake Edmonds had RBI singles themselves. In total 11 players came to the plate for Hinsdale Central in the big inning.

York (5-7) made it a game in the bottom of the bottom of the sixth inning, scoring three runs, cutting the Hinsdale Central lead to 6-4 at the time. Senior Tyler Procajlo led off with a single and eventually came around to score. Trent Lawrence added an RBI single later in the frame and scored as well. After a Matt Pinkowski single put runners at the corners with one out, bringing the tying run at the plate, Hinsdale Central turned to Luke Adams out of the bullpen. Adams came in pumping 87 mph fastballs, getting Jack Rozmus to hit a sacrifice fly and inducing another fly out to end the threat.

In total Hinsdale Central pounded out 15 hits in the win and gave up three.
