MUNDELEIN, IL – 2017 LHP Brendan Murphy was the star for Mundelein in a 5-2 victory over Lake Zurich on Wednesday afternoon.

Brendan MurphyMurphy, an Arizona State commit, was in command from the first pitch of the game. He worked seven innings allowing just two hits, three walks, while striking out 14 hitters without allowing an earned run. Murphy flashed premium stuff for the Mustangs as he worked with his fastball and slider, flashing just one changeup in the outing. His fastball sat at 88 mph for four innings topping out at 90 mph. Murphy struck out the side twice and at one point ran a streak of five consecutive strikeouts.

The lone blemish on the outing was a bases loaded back pick at third that hit off the runners helmet and ricocheted into left field to score two runs. After the runs scored he came back to strike out the next two hitters.

Murphy also got the job done at the plate going 1-2 with three RBIs including an RBI single in the first and two sacrifice flies.

Nick Stricker was the table setter for the Mustangs offense on the day going 2-3 from the leadoff spot, scoring three runs, and stealing two bases.

Kevin Johlie and Austin Wells had the hits for the Bears, and Ben Cornelius walked twice and scored a run.

Mundelein moves to 20-7 on the season as Lake Zurich drops to 10-14, both teams meet again tomorrow at Lake Zurich.
