MUNDELEIN, IL – Over the past three springs I have made the trek out to Mundelein High School to see LHP Brendan Murphy. Each year Murphy impresses with a lot of strikeouts, a limited number of hits, and impressive fastball velocity. Today was no different than the previous two years, except for one thing. MLB scouts were packed in behind home plate to get a look at the 6-foot-4 Arizona State commit.
Murphy worked 89-91 with his fastball, and touched 92 mph early in the outing. He was perfect through the first three innings and racked up four strikeouts the first time through the order. When Murphy exited after six innings of work, the numbers looked the same as the previous two years. Nine strikeouts, two hits, and two walks.
Mundelein got on the board in the in the first inning thanks to an RBI double by none other than Murphy. The Mustangs added three runs in the bottom of the third highlighted by a two run double off the bat of Jeff Morton.
Iowa football commit Henry Marchese was the offense for Stevenson. Marchese broke up the perfect game with an infield single in the top of the fourth inning, blazing down the line at 4.08 seconds. On the next two pitches he stole second and third. Charlie Ling hit a sacrifice fly to drive in Marchese with the first run of the game for the Patriots. Marchese finished the day 3-4 with a triple, a run scored, and an RBI.
Mustang reliver Zach Zentz got into some trouble in the top of the seventh but escaped the damage allowing just one run in the 5-2 victory.
