Unsigned Senior Showcase: Infield Analysis

One of the biggest Unsigned Senior Showcases on the PBR circuit is the October event at The MAX in McCook, IL. This year more than 130 prospects came out and showcased in front of 50+ coaches in attendance. The next position analysis on the list is infielders. The event was full of intriguing infielders and ranking the top 10 from the event was not an easy task. Here’s a look at the top infield prospects at the event.

Top infield Prospects


1. Korry Howell, MIF, Homewood-Flossmoor, 2016
Athletic and projectable frame 6-foot-1, 175-pound right-handed hitting middle infielder. Committed to Kirkwood Community College following the event. Flashed an impressive combination of tools running a 6.89 60 and registering a 90 mph exit velocity. Offensively, fluid rhythm, loose hands, quick bat and simple swing. Made a lot of hard contact during batting practice. Level path through the hitting zone. Defensively, smooth actions, good body control and a loose, whippy arm. Soft hands, quick exchange and fluid footwork. Clocked at 81 mph across the diamond.

2. Jeran Simpson, MIF, Wheaton Warrenville South, 2016
Solidly built 5-foot-11, 165-pound athletic right-handed hitting middle infielder. Offensively, posted the best exit velocity at the Unsigned Senior Showcase, 96 mph. Extremely loose and easy bat speed. Strong hands and short path to the baseball. Fluid rhythm, compact and simple swing. Open, balanced setup, smooth pre-pitch load, short stride and good balance through contact. Defensively, steady hands and good body control on the infield. Athletic fielding position, short arm action, over-the-top slot and clocked at 74 mph across the diamond. Also, ran a 7.01 60 yard dash.

3. Malik Coupet, MIF, Homewood-Flossmoor, 2016
Undersized 5-foot-8, 147-pound right-handed hitting middle infielder. Offensively, loose and simple swing. Level, flat bat path through the hitting zone. Good balance through contact and sprayed balls to all fields in batting practice. Fluid rhythm and good balance. Registered an exit velocity of 83 mph. Defensively, good infield actions. Soft hands, athletic fielding position, quick and fluid footwork. Quick, clean exchange, high ¾ slot, accurate arm and clocked at 77 mph. Also, ran a 7.02 60.

4. Anthony Cocco, 2B/3B, Lockport, 2016
Well-proportioned, solidly built 6-foot, 180-pound left-handed hitting infielder. Offensively, flashed solid hitting tools. Aggressive, short and compact swing. Present bat speed with strength through contact and good balance. Made a lot of hard contact during his round of batting practice. Gap-to-gap type hitter. Starts from a crouched setup, smooth pre-pitch load and heel-lift stride. Registered an exit velocity of 87 mph. Defensively, reliable hands and solid actions on the infield. Fields the ball out front and looked good on the play to his glove side. Short arm action, high ¾ slot, accurate and clocked at 79 mph across the diamond. Also, ran a 7.37 60.

5. Jeremy Gaines, 2B/OF, Oak Park-River Forest, 2016
5-foot-9, 165-pound athletic body right-handed hitting infielder and outfielder. Flashed some of the better tools at the event. Ran a 6.87 60 yard dash. Offensively, showed some bat speed and registered an exit velocity of 89 mph. Starts from a balanced and open setup position. Slight pre-pitch load, short stride and good balance through contact. Uphill bat path through the hitting zone. Defensively, athletic actions in the outfield. Fluid footwork, clean exchange, long arm action, high ¾ slot, accurate clocked at 84 mph. On the infield, soft hands, athletic fielding position, out front. Fluid footwork and shorter arm action, clocked at 78 mph across the infield.

6. Connor Pett, 1B, Carmel Catholic, 2016
Strong frame 6-foot-4, 200-pound physical right-handed hitting first baseman. Showed plus strength at the plate. Offensively, registered one of the best exit velocities of the event, 96 mph. Flashed explosive bat speed at times and pull power during his round of batting practice. Does not get cheated. Balanced, athletic setup, pre-pitch load, leg-lift trigger and good balance through contact. Also, ran an above average 60 for a first baseman, 7.13. Defensively, flashed a quick arm across the diamond. Long arm action, low ¾ slot and throws clocked at 79 mph.

7. Josh Figueroa, C/INF, De La Salle, 2016
5-foot-10, 170-pound catcher/infielder, solid average build. Arm showed good carry both from the infield and behind the dish, loose over the top action, easy arm, 75 mph out of the crouch, 80 mph across the diamond. Demonstrated soft hands all over the field, footwork is fluid, slightly heavy, best suited at third base on the infield. Stands up out of the crouch, could stay lower through transfer, good exchanges, 1.95-2.09 pop times. Right-handed hitter, athletic setup, smooth loading action with short stride. Loose handed swing, good barrel awareness, quiet approach with repeatable contact. Path is level through contact, short to it, gap to gap type approach. 88 mph exit velocity from the tee. 7.54 runner in the 60.

8. Colin Rivard, SS, Naperville North, 2016
Wiry 5-foot-10, 150-pound quick twitch right-handed hitting infielder. Impressed with a multitude of tools. Started off by running a 6.84 60 yard dash. Offensively, registered an above average exit velocity, 90 mph. Flashed a loose fast bat, fluid rhythm and a level path through the hitting zone. Open, balanced setup, pre-pitch load, long stride and good balance. Defensively, Rivard showed quick, fluid footwork and a quick exchange on the infield. Short, quick arm action, from an over-the-top slot, accurate and clocked at 79 mph.

9. Scott Cappis, 3B/2B, St. Ignatius, 2016
Bigger bodied 6-foot-2, 190-pound right-handed hitting infielder. Offensively, seemingly barreled everything thrown his way during his round of batting practice. Fluid rhythm and loose, strong swing. Registered an exit velocity of 95 mph. Balanced, open setup, smooth pre-pitch load and present bat speed. Defensively, soft, reliable hands on the infield. Athletic fielding position, good body control and clean transfer. Short arm action, high ¾ slot and clocked at 75 mph across the diamond. Also, ran a 7.85 60.

10. Jose Perez, MIF, Morgan Park, 2016
Undersized 5-foot-5, 147-pound right-handed hitting middle infielder. Offensively, above-average path to the baseball. Short and level bat path. Big deliberate leg-lift trigger, fluid rhythm and balance through contact. Balanced, athletic and open setup. Registered an exit velocity of 73 mph. Defensively, fluid footwork and played with some bounce on the infield. Athletic fielding position and soft hands. Short arm action, over-the-top slot and some accuracy across the diamond. Also, ran a 7.20 60.

Anthony Agne, 2B, Plainfield North, 2016
Average build 5-foot-10, 155-pound right-handed hitting infielder. Offensively, flashed a quick bat. Short, level path through the hitting zone, and mid-opposite field approach during batting practice. Balanced, closed setup, short stride and average balance. Registered an 82 mph exit velocity. Defensively, steady hands and body control on the infield.  Clean, short arm action and a ¾ slot. Clocked at 77 mph across the diamond. Also, ran 7.30 60 yard dash.

Drew Barth, MIF, Pewaukee (WI), 2016
Undersized 5-foot-9, 145-pound right-handed hitting middle infielder. Offensively, balanced setup, pre-pitch load and short stride. Average bat speed and level bat path through the hitting zone. Registered an exit velocity of 68 mph. Defensively, quick and clean exchange on the infield. Long arm action, high ¾ slot. Clocked at 68 mph across the diamond. Ran a 7.61 60.

Nikolas Bell, MIF, Eureka, 2016
Average build 5-foot-9, 155-pound right-handed hitting middle infielder. Offensively, flashed a level bat through the hitting zone. Starts with a wide base. Pre-pitch load, long stride and average bat speed. Line drive type hitter. Registered an exit velocity of 86 mph. Defensively, steady hands and long exchange on the infield. Long arm action, ¾ slot, some accuracy and carry on throws, clocked at 79 mph across the diamond. Also, ran a 7.39 60.

Jameil Brown, 1B, Morgan Park, 2016
Big bodied 6-foot-3, 220-pound right-handed hitting first-baseman. Offensively, short bat path, fluid rhythm, looseness in swing and average balance through contact. Balanced, open stance and pre-pitch load. Stride varied between a long leg-lift trigger and a short stride.  Registered an exit velocity of 83 mph. Defensively, showed some feel and moved well around the bag at first base. Ability to throw from multiple angles, short arm action and clocked at 76 across the diamond. Also, ran a 7.66 60.

Joey Buhay, 3B/2B, Joliet Catholic, 2016
Athletically built 6-foot-1, 180-pound right-handed hitting infielder. Offensively, some looseness in swing. Balanced, tall setup, pre-pitch load and short stride. Registered an exit velocity of 83 mph. Defensively, flashed body control on the infield. Reliable hands, fluid footwork and clean exchange. Short arm action, ¾ slot, accurate arm and clocked at 75 mph across the diamond. Also, ran a 7.38 60.

Dominic Carmignani, 3B/2B, Nazareth, 2016
Strong 5-foot-8, 180-pound right-handed hitting infielder. Offensively, simple swing, level bat path through the hitting zone and not a lot of moving parts. Registered an 87 mph exit velocity. Starts from an open and balanced setup. Slight pre-pitch load, short stride. Flashed a line drive approach during batting practice. Defensively, long arm action and high ¾ slot. Clocked at 74 mph across the infield. Also, ran a 7.22 60.

Terrence Cribbs, MIF, Hinsdale South, 2016
Strong, thick build 5-foot-8, 175-pound right handed hitting middle infielder. Offensively, starts from a balance, closed stance. Short, heel lift stride, late rhythm and one handed finish. Registered an exit velocity of 80 mph. Defensively, made a nice play on the run through. Reliable hands and some body control. Short arm action, high ¾ slot and clocked at 72 mph across the diamond. Also, ran a 7.81 60.

Vincent Dellamorte, 3B/2B, Plainfield North, 2016
Well-proportioned 5-foot-11, 170-pound right-handed hitting infielder. Offensively, crouched, open setup and leg-kick trigger. Short path through the hitting zone. Registered a 76 mph exit velocity. Defensively, solid body control on the infield. Short arm action from an over-the-top slot, clocked at 69 mph across the diamond. Also, ran a 7.25 60 yard dash.

Christian Ebeling, SS/RHP, Wheaton Academy, 2016
Wiry 5-foot-10, 150-pound right-handed hitting shortstop and pitcher. Offensively, creates some bat speed. Balanced setup pre-pitch load and toe-tap trigger. Uphill bat path through the hitting zone. Worked the right-center field gap during his round of batting practice. Registered an exit velocity of 83 mph. Defensively, showed some lateral agility on the infield making a diving play to his glove side up the middle. Fluid footwork, clean exchange and athletic fielding position. Long arm action, high ¾ slot and clocked at 74 mph across the diamond. On the mound the right-handed pitcher offers a four pitch arsenal. Operates with some rhythm, short stride and a slightly upright finish. Short, loose arm action, high ¾ slot and regular effort. Square and online direction. Fastball sat 77-78 mph and touched 79 mph. Change-up looked to be his best offering. Good arm speed, slight sink and fade action, feel and ranged between 72-74 mph. Featured a curveball and a slider. Curveball plays with 11/5 action and sat 68-69 while the slider flashed tighter action, 10/4 shape and sat 71 mph.

David Ferguson, 3B/1B, Plainfield North, 2016
Muscle bound 5-foot-11, 195-pound right-handed hitting corner infielder. Offensively, strong, simple swing. Made a lot of hard contact and worked the right-center field gap during his round of batting practice. Ball jumps off his bat at times. Wide setup, smooth pre-pitch load, short stride and average balance. Recorded an exit velocity of 88 mph. Defensively, quick exchange on the infield. Long arm action, ¾ slot and clocked at 74 mph across the diamond. Also, ran a 7.61 60.

Raymond Hansen, 3B/3B, St. Rita, 2016
Big body 5-foot-9, 200-pound right-handed hitting infielder. Offensively, strong and simple swing. Flashed a quick bat at times. Balanced setup and a short leg-kick trigger. Registered an exit velocity of 83 mph. Defensively, showed some actions on the infield. Made a nice diving play on a ball up the middle, got to his feet and made an accurate throw. Steady hands and quick exchange. Short arm action, over-the-top slot and clocked at 80 mph. Also, ran a 7.85 60.

Justin Hardiman, MIF, Kenwood, 2016
5-foot-6, 120-pound lean right-handed hitting middle infielder. Offensively, starts from a balanced setup, pre-pitch load and short stride. Short path to the baseball and average bat speed. Registered an exit velocity of 69 mph. Defensively, flashed some lateral agility on balls to his left and right. Long arm action from a high ¾ slot, clocked at 68 mph. Also, ran a 7.92 60.

Darick Hayes, 3B/RHP, Mount Vernon, 2016
Strong body 6-foot, 195-pound right-handed hitting infielder and pitcher. Offensively, easy bat speed and simple swing. Ball jumped off his bat at times and barreled a number of baseballs during his round of batting practice. Gap-to-gap type hitter. Open, tall setup, pre-pitch load, reverse toe-tap trigger and good balance through contact. Short, level bat path through the hitting zone. Registered an exit velocity of 83 mph. Defensively, puts a lot into his throws on the infield. Long arm action, over-the-top slot and clocked at 84 mph. Also, ran a 7.60 60. On the mound the right-handed pitcher operates on-line and short stride. Short arm action, over-the-top window and quick arm speed. Fastball sat 80-82 mph mostly straight. Also, featured a curveball and a slider. Slider looked to be the better pitch, 10/4 action, 71-72 mph. Curveball worked 12/6, 69 mph. Change-up flashed fade and arm-side-run ranging between 74-77 mph.

Jordan Kaplan, 1B, Glenbrook North, 2016
Big bodied 6-foot-3, 210-pound right-handed hitting first baseman. Offensively, registered an 87 mph exit velocity. Balanced setup, some pre-pitch rhythm and load. Leg-kick trigger, average bat speed and level bat path through the hitting the zone. Defensively, the first baseman showed decent feel around the bag. Steady hands, long arm action and throws clocked at 74 mph across the diamond. Also, ran a 7.41 60.

Carl Krumenauer, C, Chippewa Falls (WI), 2016
6-foot, 155-pound switch-hitting catcher, slender build. Good runner, 6.95 in the 60 yard dash. Balanced setup from both sides, short stride. Right-handed swing is clearly stronger, flat level path with some length. 76 mph exit velocity from the left side, 78 mph exit velocity from the right. Defensively Arm action is short, over the top slot, 71 mph arm strength out of the crouch. On the infield arm worked similarly, played at 69 mph across the diamond. Showed the ability to play through the baseball to his target.

Christian Lett, SS, Rochester, 2016
Strong build 5-foot-10, 170-pound right-handed hitting infielder. Defensively, showed off a solid arm, fluid footwork and good body control. Accurate, short arm action, over-the-top slot and clocked at 80 mph across the infield. Offensively, big, smooth pre-pitch load onto his backside. Balanced setup, short stride, average bat speed and long uphill bat path through the hitting zone. Registered an exit velocity of 79 mph. Also, ran a 7.28 60 yard dash.

Adam Locke, 1B, TF South, 2016
Well-proportioned 5-foot-10, 180-pound right-handed hitting first baseman. Offensively, balanced setup, simple swing and some pre-pitch rhythm. Short stride and average bat speed.  Registered an exit velocity of 83 mph. Defensively, average hands on the infield. Long arm action from a high ¾ slot. Clocked at 75 mph across the infield. Also, ran a 7.27 60 yard dash.

Jack McEnroe, 1B, Elk Grove, 2016
Long and lean 6-foot-1, 155-pound right handed hitting first baseman. Offensively, balanced and tall setup. Early rhythm, big pre-pitch load and leg-kick trigger. Level bat path through the hitting zone. Exit velocity registered 84 mph. Defensively, steady hands and clean exchange. Arm flashed carry, short arm action, high ¾ slot and clocked at 79 mph. Also, ran a 7.90 60.

Patrick McGowan, MIF/OF, Lincoln-Way East, 2016
6-foot-3, 175-pound right-handed hitting middle infielder and outfielder. Offensively, looseness in swing. Open, balanced setup, pre-pitch load, and long stride. Long, uphill bat path through the zone. Registered an exit velocity of 85 mph. Defensively, flashed a good arm from the outfield. Long arm action, high ¾ slot, true flight on throws, clocked at 85 mph. On the infield, quick exchange from a lower slot than in the outfield. Clocked at 78 across the diamond. Also, ran a 7.44 60.

Lucas Messer, 3B, N/A, 2016
Projectable frame with plenty of room to add strength 6-foot-5, 185-pound right-handed hitting first baseman. Offensively, tall, open setup, low hand set pre-pitch and long stride. Average balance through contact and flashed a level bat path through the hitting zone. Registered an exit velocity of 84 mph. Defensively, average hands on the infield. Quick exchange, loose arm, high ¾ slot and clocked at 78 mph. Also, ran a 7.96 60.

John Neville, 1B/RHP, Antioch, 2016
Big bodied 6-foot-3, 235-pound right-handed hitting first baseman and pitcher. Offensively, tall, balanced and simple setup. Smooth pre-pitch, short stride, low hands and average balance through contact. Registered an exit velocity of 86 mph. Defensively, quick and clean exchange. Short arm action, multiple arm angles, accurate and clocked at 74 mph across the diamond. Also, ran an 8.29 60. On the mound the right hander operated with a slight hesitation coming out of leg lift. High ¾ slot, long arm on the backside and regular effort. Square and on-line finish. Fastball sat 75-78 mph, touching 81. Decent feel for curveball worked 11/5 and ranged between 65-69 mph. Change-up sat 66-70 mph.

Jake Nipperus, 3B, Hinsdale South, 2016
Very projectable frame 6-foot-4, 185-pound long and lanky right-handed hitting infielder. Offensively, registered an 89 mph exit velocity. Tall, open stance, pre-pitch load, long stride and above average balance through contact. Level bat path through the hitting zone and worked gap-to-gap during his round of batting practice. Defensively, long arm action, ¾ slot, some accuracy and clocked at 73 mph across the diamond. Also, ran a 7.33 60.

John Plattner, 1B/OF, Sacred-Heart Griffin, 2016
Muscle bound 6-foot-1, 200-pound right-handed hitting first baseman and outfielder. Offensively, flashed strength and lift in swing. Balanced, wide setup, and smooth pre-pitch load. Short stride, average balance and uphill bat path at times. Registered an exit velocity of 85 mph. Defensively, at first base quick exchange. Short arm action from an over-the-top slot with some accuracy clocked at 74 mph across the diamond. In the outfield same over-the-top slot as in the infield. Clocked at 76 mph. Also, ran a 7.45 60.

Neftali Reyes, 3B/RHP, Roberto Clemente, 2016
Athletic and lean build 6-foot-1, 165-pound right-handed hitting infielder and pitcher. Offensively, flashed some looseness in swing. Long levers, narrow and tall setup. Leg-lift trigger and average balance through contact. Uphill bat path through the zone. Registered an exit velocity of 82 mph. Defensively, reliable hands on the infield. Long and loose arm action clocked at 83 mph across the diamond. Also, ran a 7.61 60. On the mound the right-handed pitcher worked from an over-the-top slot, short arm action, some rhythm and easy effort. Fastball sat 79-81 mph, touching 82 with occasional run and sink when down in the zone. Curveball ranged between 66-69 mph with near fastball arm speed. Also, featured a change-up with feel that looked to be his best secondary offering. Showed sink and fade, 71-72 mph.

Brandon Rossiter, 2B/OF/RHP, Minooka, 2016
Average build 5-foot-9, 165-pound right-handed hitting infielder, outfielder and pitcher. Offensively, some looseness in swing and made a lot of solid contact during batting practice. Starts from a balanced, open setup. Fluid rhythm, short stride and a gap-to-gap approach. Exit velocity registered 83 mph. Defensively, in the outfield clean exchange and accurate throws. Short arm action, high ¾ slot and clocked at 81 mph. On the infield his arm showed some carry across the diamond. Arm slightly longer action from a ¾ slot and 77 mph across the infield. Also, ran a 7.35 60. On the mound the right-handed pitcher worked with a slight cross fire delivery. Some effort, long arm action, high ¾ slot and athletic finish. Showed feel for fastball with arm-side-run at 80-82 mph. Curveball plays 11/5 with slurvy action, sat 63-64 mph. Flashed fastball arm speed on his change-up, with sink and fade, ranging between 74-76 mph.

Marc Schaefer, MIF, Lincoln-Way Central, 2016
Smaller build 5-foot-6, 145-pound right-handed hitting middle infielder. Ran one of the better 60 times of the event, 6.88. Combined his speed with an above-average exit velocity, 88 mph. Offensively, starts from an open stance and short stride. Hands get in a good position to hit. Short, uphill path to the baseball. Line drive hitter during batting practice working the middle to right-center gap of the field. Defensively, flashed quick footwork on the infield. Plays through the baseball. Short arm action, high ¾ slot, some accuracy and clocked at 79 mph across the infield.

Daniel Schimmel, MIF, Hinsdale South, 2016
Strong for size 5-foot-9, 170-pound right-handed hitting middle infielder. Flashed some impressive tools at the event. Ran a 6.88 60. Offensively, registered a 92 mph exit velocity. Flashed bat speed, strength and an aggressive swing during his round of batting practice. Balanced setup, pre-pitch load and leg-kick trigger. Defensively, quick feet on the infield. Short arm action and clocked at 78 mph across the diamond.

Vince Schwartz, 1B, Oswego East, 2016
Strong 6-foot-2, 190-pound right-handed hitting first baseman. Offensively, registered a 93 mph exit velocity. Flat bat path that stays through the hitting zone a long time and good extension through contact. Flashed present bat speed. Balanced setup, smooth slight pre-pitch load and fluid rhythm throughout. Defensively, steady hands and showed some feel around the bag at first base. Long arm action, high ¾ slot and clocked at 73 mph across the diamond. Also, ran a 7.39 60.

Aaron Simon, 1B/OF, St. Charles North, 2016
Solid build 6-foot-1, 180-pound right-handed hitting first baseman and outfielder. Offensively, starts from a balanced setup, pre-pitch load and short stride. Registered an exit velocity of 86 mph. Defensively, at first base showcased a clean exchange. Short arm action, ¾ slot and clocked at 79 mph. in the outfield used a longer arm action from a high ¾ slot and clocked at 81 mph. Also, ran a 7.82 60 yard dash.

Noah Stern, 1B/LHP, Highland Park, 2016
Athletic build 6-foot, 170-pound right-handed hitting first baseman and left-handed pitcher. Offensively, narrow and tall setup. No load, short stride and average bat speed. Level bat path through the hitting zone. Registered an 80 mph exit velocity. Defensively, the left-handed thrower showed a strong arm across the diamond. Long arm action, high ¾ slot with carry, clocked at 80 mph. Also, ran a 7.30 60 yard dash. On the mound, would be a tough matchup for left-handed hitters. Long arm action, high ¾ window and closed front side. Fastball sat 80-82 mph, touching 83 with hard cutting action at times. Curveball played 12/6 and ranged between 65-68 mph. Change-up sat 74-76 mph with sink and slight cut.

Marcus Stewart, 1B/3B, Plainfield South, 2016
Physical, strong 6-foot-2, 200-pound right-handed hitting first baseman. Offensively, some fluid pre-pitch rhythm. Open setup, smooth pre-pitch load, gets back to square on his stride and average balance. Registered an 86 mph exit velocity. Defensively, on the infield showed steady hands at first and third base. Moves well around the bag at first base. Throws clocked at 76 mph across the diamond. Ran a 7.81 60.

Max Swiatek, 2B, Lakes Community, 2016
Solid build 5-foot-7, 180-pound right-handed hitting second baseman. Offensively, flashed some bat speed, looked to pull and made some hard contact in his round of batting practice. Balanced, open setup, pre-pitch load and leg-kick trigger. Uphill bat path through the hitting zone. Registered a 91 mph exit velocity off a tee. Defensively, high ¾ slot and clocked at 66 mph across the diamond. Also, ran a 7.55 60.

PJ Teahan, 3B/RHP, Maine South, 2016
6-foot-1, 175-pound athletically built right-handed hitting third baseman and pitcher. Offensively, starts from an open, wide setup. Short, toe-lift stride and average balance. Flashed a level bat path through the hitting zone at times. Registered an exit velocity of 80 mph. Defensively, steady hands and quick exchange on the infield. Throws clocked at 70 mph across the diamond. Also, ran a 7.29 60. On the mound flashed a two-seam fastball that had heaviness and sink at times. Fastball sat 79-81 mph and touched 82. Curveball worked 12/6, gradual action and ranged between 63-67 mph. Long arm action, ¾ slot and square on-line finish.

Ricardo Uriostegui, MIF, Von Steuben, 2016
