Fall Underclass Games: Catchers Analysis

For the fifth year, Prep Baseball Report - Missouri/Kansas held the Fall Underclass Games in Manhattan, Kansas at Kansas State University.  Nearly 50 players from Missouri and Kansas participated in teh 2021 and 2020 classes.

Players can now updated their profiles with a ProspectPlus subscription, while scouts and recruiters can add players on the ScoutPlus dashboard.

Player profiles have been updated with profile picture, running times, velocities, and videos.  Today will take a closer look at the catchers from the event. Players are listed in alphabetical order below.

Catchers

Ethan Baranczuk C / Mill Valley, KS / 2020

Baranczuk is a long limbed and lean 5-foot-10 135-pound right-handed hitting catcher in Kansas’ 2020 class.  He ran a 8.12 60 and ran a 5.00 home to first.  He has a 74 mph exit velo. At the plate, middle of the field approach, level path, balanced set up, early stride, no wasted movement in hands, doubled to right center in game action.  Behind the plate, pop times between 2.19 and 2.39-seconds, 63 mph positional velo, over the top release, quick catch and throw, clean exchange, flexible set up, mostly accurate throws, actions and build would suggest increases as he continues to develop.

Benjamin Bryan C / RHP / Blue Springs South, MO / 2021

Bryan is a strong bodied 6-foot 202-pound right-handed hitting catcher in Missouri’s 2021 class.  He ran a 7.69 60 and a 4.90 home to first.  He has a 79 mph exit velo. At the plate, start open, quick in line stride, hands separate from stride, flashed power to pull side, swing produced mostly middle and pull side line drives, quick bat speed, doubled twice in game action to center field.  Behind the plate, pop times between 2.28 and 2.37-seconds, 67 mph positional velo, thin set up in base, over the top release, long arm circle, feet and hands work together, fluid transfer.

Ty Campbell C / 2B / Blue Springs South, MO / 2021

Campbell is a long levered 5-foot-10 150-pound left-handed hitting catcher in Missouri’s 20201 class.  He ran a 8.40 60 and a 5.12 home to first.  He has an exit velocity of 72 mph. At the plate, thin set up, smooth rhythm, controlled leg kick, accelerated swing, occasionally loses barrel, middle to pull side contact, loose hands creates bat whip.   Behind the plate, pop times between 2.31 and 2.58-seconds, 66 mph positional velo, thin set up in feet, short over the top release, clean transfer, fluid footwork, throws mostly accurate to the bag.

Mitchael Casement C / 3B / Maize, KS / 2021

Casement is a 5-foot-8 160-pound right-handed hitting catcher in Kansas’ 2021 class.  He ran a 8.42 60 and a 5.65 home to first.  He has an exit velocity of 71 mph. At the plate, starts with wide stance, small stride with minimal load, some lift to swing path, mostly middle to pull side contact during batting practice.  Behind the plate, 2.20 to 2.47 pop times, 65 mph positional velo, short over the top release, momentum through the catch with back side, soft hands, fluid footwork and exchange.

Trevor Curl C / 3B / Fort Zumwalt West, MO / 2020

Curl is a 5-foot-6 145-pound right-handed hitting catcher in Missouri’s 2020 class.  He ran a 7.69 60 and a 4.88 home to first.  He has an exit velocity of 77 mph. At the plate, balanced stance, slight load to back side, early and short stride, compact swing, two-piece swing, swing path works to the top of the ball, mostly middle to pull side line drives.  Behind the plate, pop times between 2.21 and 2.33, 66 mph, over the top release, short arm circle, quick action, mostly accurate throws.

Hayden Dyer C / RHP / Gardner Edgerton, KS / 2021

Dyer is a 5-foot-10 150-pound right-handed hitting catcher in Kansas’ 2021 class.  He ran a 7.34 60 and 4.56 home to first. He has an 82 mph exit velocity. At the plate, balanced set up, reverse toe tap, smooth and controlled load, showed occasional pull side power, gap to gap approach, hand manage the barrel, singled to left in game action,. Behind the plate, pop times between 2.08 and 2.22-seconds, 69 mph positional velo, thin set up in base, high three quarters release, shows flexibility, soft hands, fluid actions, hands and feet work together, mostly accurate throws

Garrett Harmison C / RHP / Riley County, KS / 2020

Harmison is a long limbed 6-foot 160-pound right-handed hitting catcher in Kansas’ 2020 class.  He ran a 4.94 home to first and a 7.75 60.  He has a 70 mph exit velocity.  At the plate, start slightly open, slight hand load, short in line stride, quick an level bat path, gap to gap approach flashing pull side power, middle of the field contact during game action.  Behind the plate, pop times between 2.18 and 2.38-seconds, 66 mph positional velo, over the top release, quick transfer, short jab step with footwork, mostly accurate throws, projectable frame.

Zaden Marroquin C / SS / Olathe East , KS / 2021

Marroquin is a 5-foot-7 150-pound right-handed hitting catcher in Kansas’ 2021 class.  He ran a 7.71 60 and a 5.09 home to first.  He has a 70 mph exit velocity. At the plate, simple and repeatable swing, starts open, short in line stride, no wasted hand movement, level bat path, gap to gap line drives, harder hit balls to pull side. Behind the plate, 2.25 to 2.34-second pop times, 66 mph positional velo, high three quarters release, give low target, shows flexibility, clean transfer, smooth transfer, mostly accurate throws.

Corey McCready 2B / SS / Blue Valley Northwest, KS / 2021

McCready is a 5-foot-8 155-pound right-handed hitting catcher in Kansas’ 2021 class.  He ran a 7.48 60 and a 4.90 home to first.  He has an exit velocity of 75 mph. At the plate, balanced set up, leg kick, in line stride, swing produced gap to gap contact, ands work inside the ball, singled in game action.  Behind the plate, pop times between 2.31 and 2.45-seconds, 67 mph positional velocity, over the top release, thin set up in base, clean transfer in sync with fluid footwork, mostly accurate throws.

Caleb Sanders RHP / C / Smithville, MO / 2021

Sanders is an athletic 5-foot-10 145-pound right-handed hitting catcher in Missouri’s 2021 class.  He ran a 7.97 60 and a 4.93 home to first.  He has a 78 mph exit velocity. At the plate, starts tall, in line stride, minimal load, aggressive bat speed, gap to gap line drives, occasional pull side pop, repeatable swing, singled through the hole at shortstop during game action.  Behind the plate, pop times between 2.12 and 2.22-seconds, 69 mph positional velocity, high three quarters release, quick jab step, clean transfer, soft hands, mostly accurate throws, fluid actions. 

Clay Saporito RHP / C / Columbus, KS / 2020

Saporito is an athletically built 6-foot-2 165-pound right-handed hitting catcher in Kansas’ 2020 class.  He ran a 7.62 60 and a 4.93 home to first.  He has an exit velocity of 77 mph. At the plate, balanced stance, quick load in lower half and hands, short in line stride, short to contact, middle to pull side contact, swing works to the top of the ball.  Behind the plate, 2.25-2.51-second pop times, 65 mph positional velo, over the top release, throws with momentum through the catch, clean transfer with fluid footwork.

JD Van Horn C / 3B / Ottawa, KS / 2020

Van Horn is a 5-foot-10 160-pound right-handed hitting catcher in Kansas’ 2020 class.  He ran a 7.75 60 and a 5.25 home to first.  He has an 81 mph exit velocity. At the plate, balanced stance, smooth load to back side, aggressive leg kick and swing path, doesn’t get cheated, showed pull side power, body stays under control, loose hands with quick bat speed.  Behind the plate, pop times between 2.03 and 2.15-seconds, 72 mph positional velo, loose over the top release, quick feet with fluid hand to glove transfer, athletic actions, throws have back spin carry, mostly accurate.

Spencer Whitfield C / 1B / McPherson, KS / 2020

Whitfield is a 5-foot-10 175-pound switch hitting catcher in Kansas’ 2020 class.  He ran a 5.18 home to first and a 8.05 60.  He has an 80 mph exit velocity. At the plate, tall set up, smooth load, hands walk away from stride, level bat path, quick bat speed, gap to gap approach.  Behind the plate, pop times between 2.28 and 2.35-seconds, 68 mph positional velo, aggressive over the top release, wide set up, momentum through the catch, loose arm action, clean exchange on time with footwork.
