Kansas City Winter Open: 2018-2019 Pitchers Analysis

On February 16, Prep Baseball Report - Missouri/Kansas held the Kansas City Open at Mac N Seitz Baseball in Kansas City, Missouri.  Over 70 players attended in the 2021 to 2018 classes. 

Players can now updated their profiles with a ProspectPlus subscription, while scouts and recruiters can add players on the ScoutPlus dashboard.

Player profiles have been updated with profile picture, running times, velocities, and videos.  Today will take a closer look at the 2018-2019 Pitchers from the event. Players are listed in alphabetical order below.

This pitching group included fifteen pitchers in the 2019 class and two in the 2018 class. THere were four left-handed pitchers and thirteen right handed pitchers.  Three pitchers were 85 mph or better during their bullpen.  Here is a look at the

2018-2019 Pitchers

Jack Arbuckle OF / LHP / Webster Groves, MO / 2019

Arbuckle is a 6-foot 162-pound left-handed pitcher in Missouri’s 2019 class. Arbuckle comes from an over the top release, throws with regular effort and repeatable delivery, showed the ability to locate fastball at 73-75 mph, 12-to-6 breaking ball at 65-66 mph, sharp and late action, down in the zone, throws on same plane as fastball, change up at 68-71 mph, slight late sink, throws with near fastball arm speed.

Cade Beason 3B / RHP / Webb City , MO / 2019

Beason is a strong 6-foot-2 195-pound right-handed pitcher in Missouri’s 2019 class. Beason showed command with three pitches, high three quarters arm slot, smooth tempo, throws with some effort at release, stays level and in line, fastball worked, 84-85 mph, good command, has sharp action on curveball, 11-to-5 action, lands for a strike, throws straight change up at 76-77 mph, throws for strike down in the zone with near fastball arm speed

Owen Chaffin RHP / SS / Blue Valley Southwest , KS / 2019

Chaffin is a strong, with some length, 6-foot-1 170-pound-right handed pitcher in Kansas’ 2019 class. Chaffin comes from a high three quarters arm slot, will drop to lower slot on occasions with fastball, controlled body, throws with regular effort, throws three pitches in the zone for strikes, fastball works at mostly 80-83 mph, some with two-seam running action, breaking ball is sharp at times, 65-68 mph, 11-to-5 shape, has feel for breaking ball, change up as arm side run, 72-76 mph, throws with near fastball arm speed, throws for a strike.

Andrew Dennis RHP / OF / Blue Valley , KS / 2019

Dennis is a 6-foot-1 165-pound right-handed pitcher in Kansas’ 2019 class. Dennis has a strong build with long levers, throws with some effort, simple and repeatable delivery, comes from a high three quarters arm slot, quick arm speed with long arm circle, fastball worked 87-89 mph, some with late running action, breaking ball has 11-to-5 shape, works down in the zone, has depth, some sharp, change up at 76-78 mph, throws for a strike down the in zone with sinking action, near fastball arm speed, more velo in the tank with arm action and athletic build.

Andrew Garry OF / RHP / Blue Springs, MO / 2019

Garry is an athletically built 6-foot-2 185-pound right-handed pitcher in Missouri’s 2019 class. Garry has a clean and repeatable delivery, smooth tempo with body control, throws with regular effort, loose arm action, athletic finish, fastball has late life 76-79 mph, two-seam action, breaking ball has 11-to-5 action, occasionally sharp and late, throws for a strike, 64-68 mph, change up as slight arm side sink, 69-72 mph, near fastball arm speed, throws for a strike.

William Hann RHP / SS / Olathe West, KS / 2019

Hann is a strong 6-foot-1 184-pound right-handed pitcher in Missouri’s 2019 class. Hann throws with some effort, loose and quick arm speed, aggressive down the mound, stays in line, some rotation at top of balance point, fastball worked 81-84 mph, touching 85 mph, showed arm side run at times, breaking ball has 11-to-5 shape, flashing depth and sharp break, throws with fastball arm speed, showed a splitter at 67-69 mph, late sink, looks to be a swing and miss pitch, down in zone.

Tyler Hill RHP / OF / Shawnee Heights , KS / 2019

Hill is a 6-foot 145-pound right-handed pitcher in Missouri’s 2019 class. Hill has a lean and loose frame with plenty of more physical development to come, throws with some effort, clean arm action, smooth and repeatable delivery, lands slightly open, fastball worked 82-84 mph, touching 85 mph, has good fastball command, 12-to-6 breaking ball, 65-67 mph, throws arm side, works change up at 73-75 mph, some with late arm side run, throws with near fastball arm speed.

Brett Leon LHP / OF / Derby, KS / 2018

Leon is a 5-foot-10 180-pound left-handed pitcher in Kansas' 2018 class. Leon pitches with a controlled tempo and over the top release, simple and repeatable delivery. He was 77-77 mph with his fastball with slight arm side run, down in zone, showed a breaking ball at 54-58 mph with 12-to-6 action, and a change up at 65-67 mph thrown with near fastball arm speed, slight sink,

James Michael RHP / Lee's Summit West, MO / 2019

Michael is a 6-foot-1 170-pound right-handed pitcher in Missouri’s 2019 class. Michael works from an over the top arm slot, works in line and level down the mound, throws with regular effort, fastball worked at 80-83 mph, breaking ball has 11-to-5 shape, late break, some depth, change up has slight sinking action arm side, throws with near fastball arm speed, 72-73 mph, athletic build with simple and repeatable delivery.

Jacob Monroe LHP / OF / Webb City, MO / 2019

Monroe is a 6-foot-2 200-pound left-handed pitcher in Missouri’s 2019 class. Monroe comes from an over the top arm slot, throws with regular effort, creates in line direction down the mound, arm works, aggressive down the mound, fastball at mostly 76-78 mph, breaking ball 1-to-7 shape, change up at 70-72 mph, throws with near fastball arm speed, flashed cutting action.

Jake Panich 1B / RHP / Park Hill, MO / 2018

Panich is a 6-foot-3 200-pound right-handed pitcher in Missouri’s 2018 class. Panich has a tall frame with long limbs and levers, high three quarters arm slot, works hands over head during wind up, some rotation at balance point, works from 3B side of rubber, in line and under control down the mound, fastball at mostly 71-72 mph with occasional cutting action, 11-to-5 breaking ball, throws for a strike, has depth with late break, 61-64 mph, throws change up with fastball arm speed, 61-65 mph.

Alex Rodriguez SS / 2B / Park Hill South, MO / 2019

Rodriguez is a 5-foot-9 156-pound right-handed pitcher in Missouri’s 2019 class. Rodriguez is a strike thrower with three pitches, simple and clean delivery, high three quarters arm slot, controlled and throws with regular effort, smooth tempo, fastball at 78-81 mph, slight running action, breaking ball has 11-to-5 shape, gradual break, 65-69 mph, change up at 72-74 mph, straight, throws with near fastball arm speed, will throw for a strike, ball comes out of hand well on all pitches, repeats release point.

Nolan Sprague LHP / 1B / Mill Valley , KS / 2019

Sprague is a 6-foot-1 180-pound left-handed pitcher in Kansas’ 2019 class. Sprague has an high three quarters arm slot, controlled leg lift with slight rotation at balance point, works from the 1B side of the rubber, hides ball well, accelerates down the mound, has command of three pitches, strike thrower, fastball at 75-77 mph, slight cutting action, works on a downhill plane, 10-to-4 shaped breaking ball, sharp and late, lands for a strike, change up at 71-72 mph, arm side sink, throws with near fastball arm speed.

David Steffen RHP / 1B / Shawnee Heights, KS / 2019

Steffen is a sturdy 6-foot-5 250-pound right-handed pitcher in Kansas’ 2019 class. Steffen has a high three quarters arm slot, keeps hands high as leg lifts at an angle, throws with regular effort, accelerated temp, in line down the mound, fastball is heave with arm side run, mostly 82-83 mph, good command, breaking ball has 11-to-5 shape, sharp downward action, has depth, 66-68 mph, change up has late sink, 70-73 mph, throws with near fastball arm speed, shows feel for the mound all pitches. 

Daniel Trehey RHP / OF / St. James, KS / 2019

Trehey is a long and lean 6-foot-3 180-pound right-handed pitcher in Kansas’ 2019 class.  Trehey comes from a high three quarters arm slot, rotates at balance point with a calm leg lift, smooth acceleration down the mound, works in line during stride, fastball showed arm side run, 78-80 mph, throws for a strike, command of 10-to-4 breaking ball, some with late action, 63-66 mph, throws change up at 61-63 mph, slight late sinking action.

Dillon Turner RHP / OF / Strafford, MO / 2019

Turner is a strong and athletically built 6-foot 175-pound right-handed pitcher in Missouri’s 2019 class. Tuner has a loose and quick arm action, throws with effort, aggressive and inline down the mound, over the top arm slot, high leg lift, falls to 1B side on finish, fastball worked 84-85 mph, showed a sharp 12-to-6 breaking ball, downward action, slider at 71 mph, slight break, more 10-to-4 shape, change up at 67-68 mph, occasional arm side run, throws with near fastball arm speed.

Gary Zancanelli RHP / Rockhurst , MO / 2019

Zancanelli is a 6-foot-2 200-pound right-handed pitcher in Missouri’s 2019 class.  Zancanelli has a controlled leg lift, accelerates in line down the mound, quick arm speed, over the top arm slot, loose arm action, strong frame with wide shoulders, fastball at 78-79 mph, works on a slight downhill plane, 11-to-5 breaking ball, throws for a strike, 69-71 mph, some with sharp and late break, slight sinking action on change up at 68-71 mph, throws with near fastball arm speed.
