Wichita Winter Open Showcase: Infielder Analysis

Prep Baseball Report Kansas held the Wichita Winter Open Showcase at Hoover Field in Wichata, Kansas.  Nearly fourty players participated in the 2022 to 2019 classes from around the area.

Player profiles have been updated with running times and velocities along with a video of their performance.

Here is a closer look at the infielders from the event, listed in alphabetical order.

Infielders

Cole Askew SS / RHP / Seaman , KS / 2021 Askew is an athletic 5-foot-9, 165-pound, right-handed hitting middle infielder prospect in Kansas’ 2021 class out of Topeka Seaman HS. He ran a 7.52 60 and posted and exit velocity of 86 mph. During hitting evaluations, Askew shows rhythm with hands, barrel control, gets the most out of his strong frame with a big swing, gets extension and hard contact with middle to pull side pop. Defensively, Askew shows good actions, momentum towards first base, clean three-quarter arm action, strong arm with a positional velo of 82 mph, very accurate throws.

Dominic Bainter 1B / OF / Hays , KS / 2021 Bainter is an athletic 5-foot-10, 160-pound, left-handed hitting corner infield prospect in Kansas’ 2021 class. At the event he ran a 7.32 60 and posted an exit velocity of 81 mph. During hitting evaluations, Bainter starts relaxed with an open stance, in line stride, loose hands, showed feel for the barrel during round, rhythm with hands, minimal dead movement, high finish with hands. On the infield, Bainter is aggressive to the baseball, fluid footwork, positional velo of 70 mph, accurate throws.

Daniel Bebee C / SS / Shawnee Mission South, KS / 2020 Bebee has a strong build and athletic frame at 6-foot-2, 190-pounds. At the event he ran a 7.26 60 and posted an exit velocity of 89 mph, one of the tops recorded. During hitting evaluations, Bebee starts with an open stance, knee pinch into his load, in line stride, showed feel for the barrel, extension through the baseball, high finish with hands, pop to left field during batting practice. On the infield, Bebee showed his off his athleticism, fluid footwork, quick arm, momentum towards first base, positional velo of 84 mph, accurate throws.

Phil Brennaman 3B / RHP / Oak Park, MO / 2020 Brennaman has a strong build and solid frame at 6-foot, 180-pounds, and is a corner infielder in Missouri’s 2020 recruiting class. He ran a 7.02 60 and posted and exit velocity of 92 mph, highest at the event. During batting practice, Brennaman starts wide, small weight shift into load, rhythm with hands, feel for the barrel, quick hands, level bat path, ball jumps off barrel and showed hard contact to all fields during round. On the infield, he shows off his athleticism, momentum towards first base, quick transfer and release, clean quick arm action, positional velo of 88 mph, mostly accurate throws.

Bret Brownlee C / SS / Veritas Christian , KS / 2022 Brownlee is a 5-foot-10, 140-pound right-handed hitting middle infield prospect in Kansas’ 2022 recruiting class. He ran a 7.78 60 and posted an exit velocity of 78 mph. During hitting evaluations, Brownlee showed contact to mostly the middle and his pull side, starts in a more upright position with a narrow stance, strides slightly across his body, compact swing, quick bat, high finish with hands. On the infield, Brownlee attacks the baseball, clean transfers, high three-quarter release, positional velo of 69 mph, mostly accurate throws.

Emmett Foltz 1B / RHP / Maize South, KS / 2020 Foltz is a long limbed and lanky framed 6-foot-3, 195-pound, right-handed hitting corner infielder in Kansas’ 2020 class. He ran a 7.69 60 and posted an exit velocity of 90 mph, one of the tops at the event. During hitting evaluations, Foltz shows a simple load, in line stride, long limbs leverage up front side, quick hands, level bat path, minimal head movement, showed hard gap-to-gap contact during round. Defensively, Foltz is quick off the base, attacks the baseball, clean transfers, three-quarter release, positional velo of 79 mph, mostly accurate throws.

Marshall Gilstrap RHP / SS / Maize South, KS / 2022 Gilstrap has a slender build at 5-foot-10 and 130 pounds. He is a right-handed hitting middle infielder in Kansas’ 2022 class. He ran a 7.84 60 yard dash and posted an exit velocity of 73 mph. During hitting evaluations, Gilstrap starts in an open stance, narrow and in line stride, some rhythm with hands, remains balanced throughout, showed pull contact throughout round of batting practice. On the infield, he shows smooth glove work, quick transfers, high three-quarter release, positional velo of 67 mph, accurate throws.

Seger Holman SS / 2B / Bishop Carroll, KS / 2020 Holman is a long limbed and projectable 6-foot-3, 155-pound, left-handed hitting middle infield prospect in Kansas’ 2020 class. He ran a 7.07 60 and posted an exit velocity of 84 mph. During hitting evaluations, Holman’s long levers create leverage, quick bat, ball jumped on the barrel, showed hard contact to the middle and pull sides, high finish with hands, remains balanced throughout swing. On the infield, Holman shows fluid footwork, momentum towards first base, clean transfers, positional velo of 72 mph, accurate throws.

Harper Kennedy 3B / RHP / Maize South , KS / 2021 Kennedy is a 6-foot, 170-pound, left-handed hitting corner infielder in Kansas’ 2021 class. He ran a 7.64 60 yard dash and posted an exit velocity of 81 mph. During hitting evaluations, Kennedy starts with a slightly opened stance, simple load, quiet hands, in line stride, remains balanced throughout swing, gap-to-gap approach during round and showed the ability to go with the outside pitch. Defensively, Kennedy has fluid footwork, quick catch to release, momentum towards first base, high three-quarter release, positional velo of 70 mph, very accurate throws.

Karson Klima 3B / 1B / Derby, KS / 2022 Klima is a big bodied 6-foot-1, 208-pound, right-handed hitting corner infielder in Kansas’ 2022 class. He ran an 8.32 60 yard dash and posted an exit velocity of 81 mph. During batting practice, Klima starts with an open stance, toe tap into load, short, compact and quick swing, leverages up front side, high finish with hands, showed a middle to pull side approach during his round. Defensively, Klima moves well for his size, aggressive to the baseball, clean transfers, over the top release, positional velo of 67 mph, accurate throws.

Easton Leon SS / 2B / Derby, KS / 2021 Leon is a 5-foot-10, 130-pound, right-handed hitting middle infielder in Kansas’ 2021 class. He ran a 7.82 60 yard dash and posted an exit velocity of 73 mph. During batting practice, Leon starts slightly open and uses a wider stance, quiet hands, maintains balance throughout swing, minimal head movement. On the infield, Leon is aggressive to the baseball, moves well side-to-side, momentum towards first base, clean transfers, positional velo of 68 mph, mostly accurate throws.

Devon Nicholson C / 3B / Maize, KS / 2020 Nicholson is a 5-foot-9, 180-pound right-handed hitting infield prospect in Kansas’ 2020 recruiting class out of Maize HS. He ran a 7.71 60 and posted an exit velocity of 82 mph. During hitting evaluations, Nicholson starts in an athletic stance, lifts front heel to get into his load, minimal head movement, slightly across body with stride, remains balanced throughout. On the infield, showed good actions, momentum towards first base, high three-quarter arm slot, accurate throws, positional velo of 74 mph.

Joe Patton C / OF / St. Thomas Aquinas, KS / 2021 Patton is a lanky 6-foot, 150-pound left-handed hitting infield prospect in Kansas’ 2021 class. He ran a 7.78 60 and posted an exit velocity of 82 mph. At the plate, Patton starts with a wider stance, loose hands, quick bat, leverages up front side, controls the barrel, showed hard contact throughout his round of batting practice. On the infield, he shows fluid footwork, momentum towards target, quick arm action, three-quarter release, fairly accurate throws, positional velo of 76 mph.

Gaige Oakley 1B / C / Wichita Heights, KS / 2022 Oakley is a big bodied 6-foot-3, 257-pound switch hitting corner infielder  in Kansas’ 2022 class. He ran a 8.90 60 and posted an exit velocity of 77 mph from the right side and 74 mph from the left side. During batting practice, Oakley has an upright stance, in line stride, short swing, hands to the baseball, contact to pull side. From the right side, open stance, weight shift into load, smooth stroke, pull side contact. At first base, Oakley attacks the baseball, quick off the base, positional velo of 68 mph, accurate throws.

Cole Schieffer 3B / 1B / Maize , KS / 2022 Schieffer has a strong build at 5-foot-9, 175-pounds and is a right-handed hitting corner infielder in Kansas’ 2022 class. He ran a 7.72 60 yard dash and posted an exit velocity of 82 mph. During hitting evaluations, Schieffer starts slightly opened, reverse toe tap into load, level bat path, remains balanced throughout swing, showed contact to the middle of the field during round. Defensively, Schieffer is aggressive to the baseball, momentum towards first base, glove tap with transfers, high three quarter release, positional velo of 67 mph, very accurate throws

Spencer Whitfield C / 1B / McPherson, KS / 2020 Whitfield is a 6-foot, 200-pound switch hitting corner infield prospect in Kansas’ 2020 class. At the event he ran a 7.90 60 and posted an exit velocity of 82 mph. During hitting evaluations Whitfield showed the ability to hit from both sides of the plate. From the left side Whitefield is slightly across his body with his stride, balanced body, lift, high finish with hands, while from the right side he has an in line stride, quicker bat, some rhythm with hands and drove the ball to left field during batting practice.

Kadyn Williams SS / 2B / Emporia, KS / 2021 Williams is a 5-foot-8, 150-pound, switch hitting middle infielder in Kansas’ 2021 class. He ran a 7.28 60 and posted an exit velocity of 82 mph from the right side and 76 mph from the left side. During hitting evaluations, Williams shows a simple and repeatable swing from the left side, leg lift into load, quick hands, level bat path, produced contact to right field. From the right side, across body with stride, quick hands, level bat path, looked to hit the ball to the middle of the field during batting practice. On the infield, Williams showed some athletic actions, fluid glove work, high three-quarter release, glove tap into transfer, accurate throws, positional velocity of 76 mph.

Rece Wilson RHP / 1B / Andover Central, KS / 2022 Wilson has a slender build and long limbs at 6-foot-1, 180-pounds and is a right-handed hitting corner infielder in Kansas’ 2022 class. He ran a 7.84 60 yard dash and posted and exit velo of 83 mph. During hitting evaluations, Wilson starts slightly open, small weight shift into load, minimal head movement, remains balanced throughout swing, showed contact to left field during round. Defensively, he moves well for his size, quick off the bag, high three-quarter release, positional velo of 78 mph, very accurate throws.
