Elite Prospect Showcase Analysis: Class of 2017 Infielders

By Jacob Gill
Pennsylvania Assistant Director of Scouting

The 2015 Elite Prospect Showcase took place Saturday, November 7th at Keystone State Baseball Academy in Manheim, PA with 75 prospects from four states displaying their skills. Today we continue our analysis of all prospects in attendance by reviewing infielders in the class of 2017.

Hershey shortstop Kris Kremer, who competed for Team PA at the 2015 PBR Future Games, continued to show the skillset that has him sitting as the top uncommitted junior infielder in the state. Solid across the board defensive skill set, including 89-mph arm strength across the diamond with every throw chest-high, on-the-money to the first baseman on this day. He ran a 6.91 60-yard dash and, you might not guess it from the 5-foot-10, 150-pound right-handed hitter's frame, but he has bat speed that generated a 92-mph exit velocity. In his BP round, he exhibited good rhythm in the box, stayed inside the ball, hit through contact, and barreled the ball to all fields.

Seth Baldensperger, 3B, Warren Area
5-foot-10, 195-pound right-handed hitter. Starts from a narrow, slightly open stance and strides to square. Has some strength in his build (82-mph exit velocity), which he was able to flash when he was on time. More in there with improved use of lower half. Defensively, he tended to field the ball deep, but showed soft hands to go along with 75-mph arm strength across the diamond.

Eddie Hamman, RHP/1B, Mifflin County
6-foot-1, 155-pound right-handed hitter. Started from a slightly open stance with weight on back side and strode to a square, wide base. Barrel wrap creates some length in his swing. Recorded a 7.26 60-yard dash and an 83-mph exit velocity, with room to add plenty of strength to his frame. Defensively, he showed a solid glove and actions, along with 78-mph arm strength.

Brenden Kennedy, SS, York Catholic
6-foot-1, 165-pound left-handed hitter. Started from a wide open stance and strode to square. Showed a solid, gap-to-gap approach and feel for the barrel in his BP round. Swing is fairly easy and should see marked improvement in 82-mph exit velocity with additional strength gains. Defensively, he showcased solid defensive actions, the ability to throw from multiple slots, and accurate 80-mph arm strength.

Will Lozinak, RHP/3B, Bishop Guilfoyle
6-foot-4, 200-pound right-handed hitter. Primarily known for his projection on the mound (he has shut down from pitching until the spring), Lozinak is a quality athlete (7.11 60-yard dash) who showed surprisingly good feet defensively for someone his size. Offensively, he generates some opposite field pop (89-mph exit velocity) from his physicality despite a hip float triggering his swing, getting him into his front side early, and limiting his incorporation of his lower half.

Nick Mancuso, 3B, Notre Dame (NJ)
5-foot-10, 180-pound left-handed hitter. Starts from a narrow, slightly open stance and strides to square. Attacked the baseball with an uphill swing path that had some length to it. Ran a 7.28 60-yard dash and recorded a 78-mph exit velocity. Defensively, he kept his footwork short and showed a quick release with 78-mph arm strength across the diamond.

Ryan McSorley, 3B/RHP, Lansdale Catholic
5-foot-10, 165-pound right-handed hitter. Starts from a slightly open stance and strides to square. Eyes stay level while body leaks forward with stride. Good pre-swing hand rhythm and his hands work through contact, which he often makes way out front. Ran a 6.80 60-yard dash and recorded an 89-mph exit velocity. Defensively, his arm strength has ticked up to 80-mph across the diamond while utilizing a long, whippy arm action.

Tommy Savastio, 1B, Cedar Cliff
6-foot-1, 190-pound right-handed hitter. Starts from an open stance and strides to slightly open. Deep launch point and low hands with upright barrel. Some length in swing, but flashes bat speed and power potential (90-mph exit velocity). Quality wheels for a corner guy (7.16 60-yard dash). Defensively, he exhibited solid actions accompanied by 78-mph arm strength.

Daniel Shubert, 1B, Springside Chestnut Hill
6-foot-2, 200-pound right-handed hitter. Hit from a square stance with waist-high leg lift that loads him on his backside. Big kick coupled with significant pre-swing hand action didn't always allow him to be on time. Back elbow creeps up in load creating some length in swing, but he is really strong with the ability to drive the baseball (92-mph exit velocity). Defensively, he exhibited solid actions accompanied by 74-mph arm strength.

Tyler Smith, IF/RHP, Seneca Valley
6-foot-1, 165-pound right-handed hitter. There's a lot going on in his swing, but he showed an ability to consistently barrel the baseball during his BP round. Starts from an open stance with weight on backside and takes abrupt knee-to-knee stride to square. High back elbow on launch, led to some length in his slightly uphill swing path. Ran a 7.10 60-yard dash and recorded an 82-mph exit velocity. Defensively, he tended to field the ball off his right hip, but showed a quick, one-shuffle release and accurate 82-mph arm strength.

Brett Swire, SS, Brandywine Heights
6-foot-1, 160-pound right-handed hitter. Athletic frame with room to add strength. Exhibited some pre-swing rhythm and hit from a square stance with short, lift-and-replace stride. Head retreats in load, coupled with backside spin, leading to bat coming out of zone early. Ran a 7.18 60-yard dash and recorded an 80-mph exit velocity. Defensively, he completed the slow roller play well and showed accurate 76-mph arm strength.

Charlie Varriano, 3B, Hempfield Area
5-foot-11, 195-pound right-handed hitter. Hit from a square stance with very short, heel-raise stride and kept head still throughout. Minimal load with hands essentially starting from a standstill, but he flashes batspeed (90-mph exit velocity) and he hits through contact well. Ran a 7.12 60-yard dash. Defensively, he showcased solid feet and hands, gained ground well toward his target, and posted 83-mph arm strength across the diamond.

Danny Williams, 3B, Slippery Rock Area
6-foot-1, 175-pound left-handed hitter. Started from a square stance and strode to slightly closed with a short leg lift in which his heel kicked upward and front knee rolled in. Exhibited an approach that was geared to the opposite field with a slightly uphill swing path and 80-mph exit velocity. Defensively, he showed accurate 75-mph arm strength from an over-the-top slot.
