District 3 AAAA: Governor Mifflin 8, Penn Manor 0

Governor Mifflin jumped on Penn Manor starter Jacob Herr for three runs on five hits in the 1st inning and never looked back in an 8-0 District 3 quarterfinal match-up last night.

John CatchmarkSenior right-hander Tanner Campbell had plenty of breathing room and pitched with confidence in a tidy complete game effort. Campbell seven hits on the evening but four of them came in the later innings once the game's outcome was no longer in doubt. He stranded runners in scoring position in each of the first three innings using an assortment of cut fastballs and a curveball that had Penn Manor hitters spinning their wheels.

The Mustangs were led offensively by the first four hitters in their lineup. Zach Weidner, Zach Sczepkowski, John Catchmark (right) and Niko Hulsizer combined to score seven of the team's eight runs while collecting 11 hits. The four seniors also accounted for half of the team's RBI count on the night.

With the win Governor Mifflin advances to play Hempfield, the District 3 No. 1 seed, in the semifinals with an automatic bid to the state tournament on the line. The loser will move to the consolation game attempting to secure the district's third and final bid to the round of 16.

District 3 AAAA: Warwick 7, Central Dauphin 2

Tim GriestCentral Dauphin starting pitcher Tony Zimmerman laced a two-out single to right-center field to drive in a pair of runs in the bottom of the first inning to give Central Dauphin an early 2-0 lead. Unfortunately for the Rams, junior righty Tim Griest (right) would not allow another run on the night.

Warwick answered immediately in the top of the 2nd inning using five hits to plate three runs to take the lead. If not for an inning ending 6-4-3 double playy with the bases loaded, the lead could have been even greater.

The Warriors added two runs in the 4th and single runs in the 6th and 7th innings to account for the 7-2 final. The top of the order fueled Warwick's offense on the evening led by Luke Hackman (2-for-5, run, 3 RBI) and Luke Mariano (2-for-3, two runs, RBI). Zach Peters also turned in a 2-for-3 performance out the the No. 6 hole.

Griest was impressive yielding four hits on the evening, just two of which came following the 1st inning. He walked two and struck out four while only allowing two Rams to reach scoring position following their two run outburst in the first frame. Griest got seemingly stronger as the game wore on, retiring 12 of the final 14 hitters he faced to finish the game.

With the win Warwick advances to play Chambersburg, the District 3 No. 10 seed, in the semifinals with an automatic bid to the state tournament on the line. The loser will move to the consolation game attempting to secure the district's third and final bid to the round of 16.
