10/06/19

PBR Norcal Uncommitted Senior Games - Long wiry frame with some present strength in the 6-foot-0, 165-pound frame; projectable lanky build. Showed a quick, loose arm from the OF attacking the ball and being able to put throws consistently on the bag, top throwing velocity of 88 mph, consistently above 85 on all four throws. LH bat shows ability to whip the barrel through the zone (89 mph exit velocity off the tee) staying flat through contact and sending LD’s to all parts of the field; doubled in game to LF on a breaking ball and singling to RCF while also stealing 2nd. PITCHING: Lean wiry athletic body with sloping shoulders on 6-foot-0 165-pound frame, competed as two way player and showed intriguing talent both ways. Fluid and athletic on the mound, works well over the rubber, allowing controlled deeper backside arm action. Stays in-line with stride leg, starts from far 1st base side of rubber. Quick arm with easy arm action, overhand slot, does tend to give a bit with plant leg which saps some power of the delivery and leads to some recoil negative energy. Bit of a sneaky release point as he keeps ball hidden pretty well. Displayed fastball control with some armside run. Late bottom out of change-up that can be swing and miss pitch. Showed feel of small late curveball thrown with feel. All three pitches and the raw stuff are on verge of developing into a college recruitable pitcher.

7/07/19

CCB World Series - Long lean frame with wiry build and strength. Crouched with even hands keeping bat on shoulder; controlled load allowing upward hand path to attack baseball with compact barrel. Timing was off being out in front, but when in time has good weight transfer and squares up the baseball showing strength in his wrists. Athletic with a strong arm in OF; corner profile with L/R.

4/09/19

v Scotts Valley - Uncommitted. Another Cardinal who is swinging a hot bat drove two balls his 4 ABs. Turned a FB right at the 1st Baseman before a long 2B in RCF. He’s athletic out of the box showing good stride length and the ability to use his athleticism in RF. Arm is compact with ability to throw through targets.

3/29/19

Vs Aptos - Uncommitted. Made good adjustments at the plate after striking out in 1st AB. Finished the day 2-3 with 2 hard singles and a walk. Long and lean lefty was able to stay compact and quick with the bat, driving the ball back through the middle twice with the 2nd one tying the game in the 5th. He got the ball into 2nd base quickly after catching a sinking liner in RF to end a threat in the 7th showing baseball instincts.

3/23/19

Vs Harbor - Uncommitted. Lean, Long frame that has length in limbs showing lean strength; projectable build. Hands start mid-chest dropping to waist with slight pause getting to balance with medium knee. Tall and fall type of delivery with compact arm that gets to 3/4 release point finishing over soft front leg. Limited usage of glove side and tendency to spin off front foot, but when in time created angle down into the lower half of the zone. FB 77-79 T80 MPH showed good angle to both sides of the plate attacking with the pitch early and often. CHG 72-74 MPH showing short bottom off the FB path and some feel using pitch in all counts. SLD 66-70 MPH was tight with short tilt and bend missing bat paths and showing late actions; best it’s been on multiple viewings of the pitch. When Chavez’s control is on point, like it was, he generates a lot of weak contact with soft pop ups and ground balls.

3/14/19

vs Leigh - Started on mound vs Leigh and was effectively wild for 4 innings. First three innings was able to pitch out of trouble stranding runners but got roughed up in 4th with two doubles and a single separated by a walk and a Sac Fly for 3 runs and the Loss. FB was 78-81 MPH with some arm-side run that ended up missing too much over the plate. Chavez is a long, lean frame with a compact H3/4 release and will need to control his FB more. When doing so it sets up his CHG and CB and allows him to extend in game.

8/25/18

PBR Norcal Underclass Games - 6-foot-0, 160-pounds, lean wiry body type, good body type. Competed as a two-way player. Tall set-up at the plate, quiet in box, stays behind ball well, BP round showed good balance with good hitting base, smooth swing and works hands inside well, looks to have ability to spray the ball. Defensively approaches the ball aggressively with athleticism, fields ball on glove side though a little deep, arm works easy and clean, good outfield arm. High-3/4 slot on the mound, fairly deep on the backside, good direction down the slope, tends to give too much on front side which takes away leverage, pitches with good rhythm and good tempo, decent arm finish, fastball had some riding life, showed good control to the arm side, slipper type 11/4 curveball, fielded position well including starting a double play.
