LHP Joe Olson (St. Laurence, 2025) Imposing, 6-foot-1, 210-pound frame, was in control on the mound during the Sparks’ 11-1 win Saturday night. The left-hander went four innings of one run ball, striking out six swinging and walking one en route to a dominant outing and win. He was a fluid mover that competed in the strike zone and worked from the first base side of the rubber. Executed a three pitch mix from the windup and stretch on a consistent basis. Displayed feel for tunneling his breaking ball and fastball from his ¾ arm slot, hiding the ball well behind his back hip. Also demonstrated a long arm swing, high leg kick, whippy arm action, well timed shoulder-hip separation, and a slight first base side stride. Fastball showed carry and sat from 87-90 mph. Curveball was a swing and miss putaway pitch at 75-79 mph. Changeup was thrown on occasion versus righties at 80-82 mph. An impressive performance from the Louisville commit, Illinois’ No. 12 overall ranked prospect.
5/01/24

Louisville commit. Olson had a big week on the mound for the Vikings, leading them to a 4-0 week with a sweep over No. 5 Providence Catholic. In both games against the Celtics, Olson collected a win and a save on seven scoreless innings, while allowing five hits and three walks, and striking out nine batters. On Tuesday, he picked up the save in a 3-2 win over the Celtics tossing a scoreless inning with two strikeouts. Then on Thursday in their 2-0 win, Olson got the start and tossed six scoreless, allowing four hits and three walks, while punching out seven.

4/25/24

Louisville commit. Currently ranked No. 12 in the state. 6-foot-1, 210-pound frame, lean strength throughout. Started on the mound and was dominant over his six innings of work, scattering four hits with no runs, walking three and striking out seven. The southpaw attacked the zone with a fastball up to 91 mph early, sitting around 89-90 mph and working to both the top and bottom parts of the zone. He went to his breaking ball more than we’ve seen in the past, playing with 1/7 shape for strikes and swing/miss at 73-76 mph. He also flashed a changeup at 81 mph with arm-side run and fade. High-level southpaw that competes on the mound, holds his composure in big situations.

4/15/23

Louisville commit. Currently ranked No. 3 in the state’s class of 2025. Listed at 6-foot-1, 210-pounds, with a strong lower half. Pitched three innings, struck out seven, walked three, allowed one run and one hit. Started on the mound for the Vikings, showed poise and confidence, mature approach, threw any pitch in any count. Easy and repeatable delivery, quick, high leg lift, tall and fall delivery, works in-line. Loose, easy, quick arm, high ¾ slot. Fastball sat 83-86 mph. Curveball sat 69-72 mph with 1/7 shape.

3/30/23

Louisville commit. Currently ranked No. 3 in the state. Olson looks to have added some strength to his 6-foot-1, 210-pound frame while also appearing to be larger than listed. Started on the mound for the Vikings and tossed four innings with one earned run, two hits, nine strikeouts and one walk. The southpaw worked his fastball up to 87 mph early on but settled in around 83-85 mph in the cold Chicago weather. He often went to a sharp breaking ball at 77-79 mph, thrown with intent and depth off a 1/7 plane. He also flashed a changeup at 80 mph, dropping his slot slightly but maintaining arm-speed and playing with fade. He has a hard-nosed attitude on the mound with a “try and hit it mentality” and the stuff to match. High-level 2025 arm.

3/01/23

Louisville commit, LHP Joe Olson (St. Laurence, 2025), is up 25 pounds (6-foot-1, 210-pounds) since this event last year, and looks like he’s gained most of it through the squat rack this winter. Olson looks as sturdy and durable as ever, while controlling the mound like a veteran starter. He showed some of the best fastball command, peppering the bottom of the zone at 85-87 mph. Olson brings similar feel to his curveball at the bottom of the zone and a fading changeup that can expand off the plate from right handed hitters.

4/21/22

Uncommitted. Physically mature, 6-foot, 190-pound frame, strong lower-half with equally distributed strength. The freshman southpaw started on the mound for No. 5 St. Laurence, impressing with a high-level fastball and off-speed to pair. His arm works with a short circle out of the glove into a ¾ slot, playing quickly to release. Down the mound, Olson moves with a somewhat up-tempo pace into his leg-lift, dropping slightly into his back knee from balance point and exploding down the mound in-line with the plate. His fastball plays with effortless life out of the hand, running to his arm-side and sitting in the 84-87 mph range. His go-to secondary offering was a tight 1/7 breaking ball, thrown with intent and flashed sharp action at times, 72-73 mph. High-level 2025 arm to follow moving forward.

2/26/22

Representing the Class of 2025, LHP Joey Olson (St. Laurence) showed as one of the top in attendance. At an athletic 6-foot, 185 pounds, Olson has a quick, clean arm that produced an 84-85 mph fastball that played true, flashing carry through the zone. While the secondary stuff is still developing, his arm speed and athleticism should lead to a quick transition for developing matching advanced secondary offerings.
