6.13.13 - Leland is a highly projectable right handed pitcher, at 6-foot-5, 200-pound he posseses a long lean frame that can carry plenty of added strength. Tall and fall delivery, pitches with rhythm, work towards his target athletically, squared landing and shoulders stay on line. Leland’s arm action is loose with length, shows plenty of arm speed from a ¾ slot. Fastball has lively action in the hitting zone, advance arm side run, showed command of the baseball, sat at 87-88 mph, touched 89 mph, very little effort. Slider has short quick darting action, 80 mph, late action when on top and spun correctly. Change up is best secondary pitch, shows plus action, highly deceptive, thrown with aggressive arm action, features arm side run with sink, 78-80 mph, showed excellent command down in the zone. Leland’s three pitch combination will tough for hitters to figure out, a running fastball coupled with an aggressive sweeping slider and plus action change all out of a ¾ window will be a dream to work with at the next level. His command is already present and has the structure to carry plenty of additional strength. Leland has the repertoire and potential to be a workhorse at the front of many rotations.
4/22/13 Long, athletic projectable frame, 6-foot-5, 200-pound right-handed pitcher. Long limbs and plenty of room for physical development. Long and loose arm from 3/4 slot. Fastball sat at 86 mph from windup, a tick less from stretch, topped at 88 a few times. Fastball has run and sink, inducing a lot of groundballs. Opens front side early, but repeats delivery consistently. Showed ability to throws consistent strikes at knees and below. Around the plate with everything. Slider, in 73-75 range, showed sharp, tight break at times; not a swing-and-miss pitch but misses barrels. Changeup (75-78) has tendency to flatten out, but showed potential. Allowed 4 hits, 3 runs in 6 innings with 3 Ks and 2 walks. Currently ranked No. 47 in Illinois’ 2014 class. High pitchability guy and velocity should increase as he fills into frame.
2/17/13 - Long, lanky frame, athletic build, 6-foot-5, 195-pound two way player. Project well on the mound. Delivery shows regular effort, some rhythm, good direction and square landing. Arm action is long and loose, shows arm speed, operates from a ¾ arm slot. Fastball has run and sink, shows a slightly heavy feel, good command at the bottom of the zone, 84-85 mph. Slider has sweeping action, pitch has high ceiling, thrown from fastball window, shows control, 72-75 mph. Changeup has sinking action, thrown near fastball arm speed, 75-79 mph. Highly projectable right handed pitcher who shows upside for three pitches. Offensively hits from a slightly open stance, bat wrap load. Bat path flattens out, 85 mph exit velocity from the tee.
9-20-2018:One of five 5th-year seniors on the Illinois roster this fall, Leland was impressive during his two-inning appearance. Showed a noticeably different vibe to his body language than previous looks over the course of his college career. Much more calm and relaxed on the bump. Commanded his 88-91 sinker down in the zone and aggressively went after hitters during his first inning. Tried to pick a bit and go for the strikeout with his above average 80-82 mph slider during his second inning, instead of continuing to pound the bottom half of the strike zone with his sinker. Overall, it was a strong performance for the righty reliever, and one who will likely play a key role for the Illini out of the bullpen this spring. (Seifert)
