Illiana Preseason I.D.: Statistical Analysis

By: Adam Panayotovich
Area Scout

On Monday, Jan. 21, we hosted the Illiana Preseason I.D., which is a dual-state event that brought nearly 60 combined players from Illinois and Indiana to one place, the Ho-Chunk Sports and Expo Center in Chicago Heights, IL. Today, we’ll continue our event coverage by dissecting the showcase’s statistical standouts. Our events' Quick Hits post was recently published providing some rapid reactions to the prospects in attendance. Keep an eye out in the coming weeks when we break down the day’s performers, position by position.

Not only was OF Gabe Wright (Brebeuf Jesuit, 2020) the leading runner in the 60-yard dash at an impressive 6.68, the Indiana native was also perhaps the most athletic, eye-opening prospect in attendance. The only other runner to crack the sub-7 second finish was C/OF Zachary McKenna (Chesterton, 2020). Wright and McKenna both tied at 87 mph in the exit velocity testing, both showing the ability to swing the bat with present speed.

SS Shane Baumgarten (Wheaton Academy, 2021) showcased his multi-tool skillset, which headlined two of the subsequent charts; exit velocity (95 mph) and infield velocity (82 mph). Baumgarten placed himself in the conversation as one of the upper echelon talents in the upcoming Sophomore class.

RHP/OF Brayson Shew (Toledo-Cumberland, 2021) may have had showed most impressive arm talent event wide topping two of the velocity leaderboards, outfield velocity (88 mph) and max fastball (85 mph). Standing at 6-foot-4, 182-pounds Shew has the upside in his frame to see those numbers steadily increase as he continues to physically mature. He showed overall athleticism to tack onto his impressive arm, crossing the 60-yard dash line at 7.11.

Another Sophomore arm that impressed was RHP Adam Brouwer from Chicago Christian who finished second in max FB velocity (84 mph), a tick behind the leader. RHP Connor Cassady (Lyons Township, 2020) tied Brouwer for second on the max FB chart and will look to build on a successful Sophomore Varsity season.

The only committed prospect in attendance, OF Carson Husmann (Bradley commit by way of South Central, IN, 2019) was in, and near the top of all possible categories he participated in. At a stout 6-foot-1, 190-pounds, Husmann has the tools to be a continuous threat on all sides of the ball in his final season of prep baseball, moving into the college ranks.

C Matthew Murphy had an all-around impressive day at the plate and behind the dish. The Notre Dame product is a physical RHH Sophomore backstop that produced a 91 mph exit velocity, good for third and the event-best pop time ranging 2.04-2.15. Murphy tied in catcher velocity testing to Caleb Sjordal (Wheaton Warrenville South, 2020), both topping 76 mph from the crouch.
