Lane Tech Walks Off With City Title

CHICAGO, IL – Lane Tech and Taft met for the City Championship on Saturday night in front of a packed house at UIC. Lane Tech eventually came back in a back and forth to walk off with the 7-6 victory.

Taft got on the board first in the top of the third when Giovanni Figueroa tripled to lead off the inning and came around to score on a groundout by Nate Posadas. Indiana commit Jack Suwinski then doubled and came home on an RBI single by Freddy Fitte. Lane Tech got on the board in the fourth when Felix Rosario singled to leadoff the inning an scored on a sacrifice fly by Simon Matthews to make it 2-1.

In the top of the fifth Taft loaded the bases with nobody out and scored on catchers interference and a walk to make it 4-1.

Lane Tech stormed back in the bottom of the fifth to take a 5-4 lead. With one out back to back walks, a single and three errors forced in four runs for the Indians.

Not to be outdone Taft answered back with two runs of their own in the top of the sixth on a two run single by Jacob Plucinski to take a one run lead.

Lane Tech loaded the bases with nobody out in the bottom of the sixth, and following two strikeouts, Bryce Williams worked a walk to force in the tying run.

After Taft failed to score in the top of the seventh, Lane Tech came up with a chance to walk it off. With two outs Simon Matthews doubled to start the rally. Pinch hitter Michael Sutor was intentionally walked, and after an error to load the bases Erik Basler stepped to the plate. Basler hit a chopper in between the first and second baseman, and the pitcher failed to cover first allowing the Indians to walk off with the City Title.
