Mac N Seitz Black Sox Scout Day: Catcher's Analysis

Prep Baseball Report - Missouri/Kansas held the Mac N Seitz Black Sox Scout Day on Saturday, February 24 in Kansas City, Missouri.  Over seventy players in the 2021 to 2018 classes participated. 

Players can now updated their profiles with a ProspectPlus subscription, while scouts and recruiters can add players on the ScoutPlus dashboard. Player profiles have been updated with profile picture, running times, velocities, and videos.  Today will take a closer look at the catchers from the event. Players are listed in alphabetical order below.

This group of catchers included five players in the 2021 class, six in the 2020 class, five in the 2019 class and one in the 2018 class.  Four catchers had pop times at 2.00-seconds or better, and four catchers had 74 mph or better positional velocity.  Five catchers had exit velos of 90 mph or better.  Here is a look at the catchers from the Mac N Seitz Scout Day.

Catchers

Matt Adams C / 1B / Shawnee Mission West, KS / 2021

Adams is a sturdy 6-foot-1 210-pound left-handed hitting catcher in Kansas’ 2021 class.  He ran a 4.82 home to first and has an 86 mph exit velocity. At the plate, starts loaded in back side, some load with rotation in hands, short stride, hands manage the bat, level path with occasionally quick bat speed, swing produced middle to pull side contact during hitting evals.  Behind the plate, high three quarters release, staggered base in set up, 2.19 to 2.40 pop times, 69 mph positional velocity, short jab step with clean exchange, mostly accurate throws, some with carry to the bag.

Steven Azzaro C / OF / St James Academy, KS / 2021

Azzaro is a lean 6-foot-1 158-pound right-handed hitting catcher in Kansas’ 2021 class.  He ran a 4.83 home to first and has an 80 exit velocity. At the plate, balanced stance, calm reverse to tap, creates direction towards the pitch with in line weight shift, quiet hands with level path through the zone, gap to gap approach.  Behind the plate, pop times between 2.28 and 2.44 seconds, 67 mph positional velocity, high three quarters arm slot, high set up with slightly staggered feet, clean exchanges with fluid footwork, mostly accurate throws.

Ethan Baranczuk C / Mill Valley, KS / 2020

Baranczuk is a slender 5-foot-10 135-pound right-handed hitting catcher in Kansas’ 2020 class.  He ran a 4.77 home to first and has a 73 mph exit velocity. At the plate, balanced set up, in line stride, no wasted movement pre-swing, level path though the zone, gap to gap approach.  Behind the plate, pop times between 2.16 and 2.40-seconds, 65 mph positional velocity, slightly offset in feet during set up, sits low and has flexibility, over the top arm slot, clean exchange with feet creating momentum to throw, mostly accurate throws.

Andrew Brubeck C / SS / Mill Valley, KS / 2020

Brubeck is a 5-foot-8 155-pound right-handed hitting catcher in Kansas’ 2020 class.  He ran a 4.75 home to first and has an 82 mph exit velocity. At the plate, open stance, smooth load with minimal hand movement, in line stride, loose hands and level path through extension, swing produced mostly gap to gap line drives during hitting evals.  Behind the plate, pop times between 2.14 and 2.26-seconds, 72 mph positional velocity, wide and square base in set up, high three quarters in release, soft hands, exchange and feet on time and in sync, momentum to throw, fluid actions with mostly accurate throws.

Benjamin Bryan C / RHP / Blue Springs South, MO / 2021

Bryan is a strong 6-foot 202-pound right-handed hitting catcher in Missouri’s 2021 class.  He ran a 4.65 home to first and has a 93 mph exit velocity. At the plate, thin and balanced set up, short stride with no wasted movement in load, in line stride, aggressive hands with quick bat speed, flashes power to the pull side with mostly middle to pull side contact.  Behind the plate, pop times between 2.32 to 2.39 seconds, 70 mph positional velocity, thin and slightly offset feet in set up, high three quarters release, fluid exchange with feet gaining ground to 2B, mostly accurate throws.

Ty Campbell C / 2B / Blue Springs South, MO / 2021

Campbell is an athletically 6-foot 160-pound left-handed hitting catcher in Missouri’s 2021 class. He ran a 4.72 home to first and has a 79 mph exit velocity. At the plate, open stance with smooth load, accelerated and loose hands, showed some feel for the barrel and range in swing, consistent middle to pull side line drives, repeats. Behind the plate, 2.22 to 2.41 pop times, 68 mph positional velocity, staggered base, smooth and clean transfer, high three quarters arm slot, arm works, shoulders get square to throw, mostly accurate throws, some with carry to the bag

Mack Clark C / SS / Blue Valley Southwest, KS / 2020

Clark is a 5-foot-10 175-pound left-handed hitting catcher in Kansas’ 2020 class.  He ran a 4.57 home to first and has an 83 mph exit velocity. At the plate, starts slightly open, controlled leg kick, fast and loose hands create quick bat speed, body stays under control, aggressive level swing path, gap to gap line drives, repeats swing with feel for the barrel. Behind the plate, pop times between 1.96 and 2.12-seconds, 76 mph positional velocity, thin and staggered setup, gets low, shows flexibility, short high three quarters release, quick catch and throw, quick feet with mostly accurate throws flashing carry.

Colby Donahoe C / SS / Lees Summit West, MO / 2020

Donahoe is a 5-foot-10 175-pound right-handed hitting catcher in Missouri’s 2020 class.  He ran a 4.96 home to first and has a 77 mph exit velocity. At the plate, balanced set up, minimal load, pre-pitch rhythm in hands, hands control the bat, level path with mostly middle contact during hitting evals.  Behind the plate, pop times between 2.27 and 2.37-seconds, 72 mph positional velocity, quick catch and throw, staggered feet, feet are fluid and create momentum to throw, clean exchanges, mostly accurate throws.

Coulton Doyle C / SS / Hickman, MO / 2019

Doyle is a 5-foot-11 175-pound right-handed hitting catcher in Missouri’s 2019 class.  He ran 4.40 home to first and has a 90 mph exit velocity. At the plate, balanced set up, slight pre-pitch rhythm in hands, controlled leg lift, in line stride, accelerated bat speed with loose hands and level path, gap to gap release.  Behind the plate, pop times between 2.06 and 2.21-seconds, 76 mph positional velocity, over the top release, offset feet in set up, quick catch and throw, shoulders get square, mostly accurate throws, some with carry.

Carsen Malan C / 2B / Blue Valley West, KS / 2021

Malan is a 5-foot-7 135-pound right-handed hitting catcher in Kansas’ 2021 class.  He ran a 4.88 home to first and has a 78 mph exit velocity. At the plate, simple and repeatable, now wasted movement, balanced with win line stride, level path though extension, quick bat speed, gap to gap line drive with hands working inside the ball. Behind the plate, pop times between 2.16 and 2.20-seconds, 71 mph positional velocity, high three quarters release, quick transfer with short and quick feet, has momentum to throw, mostly accurate throws, flashing carry.

Kaleb Mitchell C / 3B / Lee's Summit West, MO / 2020

Mitchell is a 5-foot-11 180-pound right-handed hitting catcher in Missouri’s 2020 class.  He ran a 4.81 home to first and has an 84 mph exit velocity. At the plate, open stance, calm left leg lift, smooth load to back side, slightly closed stride, gap to gap approach.  Behind the plate, 2.32 to 2.52 pop times, 69 mph positional velocity, over the top release, feet and hands work on time together, quick transfer with momentum to throw, staggered feet, accurate throws.

Nick Modrcin C / 1B / St. James Academy, KS / 2018

Modrcin is a 6-foot-2 190-pound left-handed hitting catcher in Kansas’ 2018 class.  He ran a 4.31 home to first and has a 91 mph exit velocity. At the plate, quick bat speed with pull side power, middle to pull contact, balanced set up with minimal load and no wasted movement.  Behind the plate, 2.13 to 2.20 pop times, 73 mph positional velocity, short over the top release, quick catch and throw, feet create momentum, accurate throws, most with carry.

Tyler Perry OF / C / Lees Summit , MO / 2019

Perry is a 5-foot-11 175-pound right-handed hitting catcher in Missouri’s 2019 class.  He ran a 4.70 home to first and has an 89 mph exit velocity. At the plate, balanced stance, slight smooth weight shit to load, calm in line stride, level path, gap to gap contact using mostly the middle of the field.  Behind the plate, pop times between 2.13 and 2.27-seconds, 70 mph positional velocity, three quarters arm slot, offset feet in set up, fluid footwork creating momentum to throw, clean exchanges, mostly accurate throws with carry to the bag.

Brady Prewitt C / 3B / Raytown South, MO / 2019

Prewitt is a sturdy 5-foot-10 170-pound right-handed hitting catcher in Missouri’s 2019 class.  He ran a 4.70 home to first and has an 82 mph exit velocity. At the plate, open stance, smooth load to back side, quiet hands, accelerated and loose bat, level path, line drives gap to gap during hitting evaluations.  Behind the plate, pop times 1.90 to 2.05-seconds, athletic and quick actions, clean exchanges on time with short and quick feet, accurate throws with carry.

Sean Roseborough C / 1B / Blue Valley Northwest, KS / 2019

Rosenborough is physical a 6-foot-1 208-pound right-handed hitting first baseman in Kansas’ 2019 class.  He ran a 4.83 home to first and has a 92 mph exit velocity. Balanced stance, quiet hands, calm reverse toe tap, short in line stride, flashes power to pull side, gap to gap approach, quick bat speed.  Behind the plate, 73 mph positional velocity, 2.00 to 2.15 pop times, soft hands, sits low to receive, slightly staggered set up, short over the top arm slot, arm works, hands and feet on time together with fluid actions, mostly accurate throws, some with carry.

Blake Steele C / 1B / Blue Valley Southwest, KS / 2019

Steele is a strong and slolid 6-foot-4 230-pound right-handed hitting catcher in Kansas’ 2019 class.  He ran a 4.69 home to first and has a 93 mph exit velocity. At the plate, showed power the pull gap with ability to drive the ball the other way, simple and repeatable with smooth rhythm, loose and quick hands, consistently found the barrel with hard contact.  Behind the plate, pop times between 1.95 to 2.19 seconds, 77 mph positional velocity, short over the top arm slot, slightly staggered feet, quick can clean with transfer and feet, aggressive out of crouch to throw with momentum, throws have carry through the bag and are mostly accurate.

JD Van Horn C / 3B / Ottawa, KS / 2020

Van Horn is an athletically built 5-foot-11 165-pound right-handed hitting catcher in Kansas’ 2020 class.  He ran a 4.71 home to first and has an 81 mph exit velocity. At the plate, balanced stance, slightly closed stride, loose hands with quick bat speed and level path, gap to gap approach.  Behind the plate, pop times between 2.20 and 2.27seconds, 71 mph positional velocity, fluid footwork with quick glove to hand transfer, mostly accurate throws, some with carry.
