2019 PBR Third Team All-State

On Monday, the PBR Illinois team released its First-Team All-State honors for the 2019 IHSA season. Today, we conclude the 2019 PBR Illinois All-State Teams with a look at the Third-Team All-State Selections. Given the amount of talent residing in the state, the Third-Team roster is stacked with players who could easily fit in on the First-Team, given the huge numbers they put up this spring.
Without further ado, here is the roster for the 2019 PBR Illinois’ Third-Team All-State.
PITCHERS
Quinn Priester RHP / Cary Grove, IL / 2019TCU COMMIT
Priester has long been the No. 1 player in the Illinois' 2019 class and put an exclamation point on his illustrious career, being selected No. 18 overall by the Pittsburgh Pirates. Priester came out this spring and established himself as one of the top prep arms in the country, consistently sitting 90-95 mph, touching 96 with an advanced arsenal. Tyler Schlaffer RHP / Homewood-Flossmoor, IL / 2019UIC COMMIT
Schlaffer, arguably caught more buzz than any other arm in the 2019 Illinois' class this spring. Schlaffer saw his velocity climb into the mid-90's and eventually was drafted in the 9th round by the Cubs and signed. Schlaffer consistently took the ball against some of the best teams in the state, beating the likes of Joliet Catholic, Lincoln Way East, Andrew, Marist and Sandburg. |
Coby Moe RHP / Grayslake Central, IL / 2019NORTHWESTERN COMMIT
The strike-throwing right-hander led Grayslake Central to a 28-8 record this spring and a Super-Sectional appearance. Moe let up only 20 hits in 45 innings and sported a 0.622 ERA. |
Matthew Boyer RHP / Edwardsville, IL / 2019ST. LOUIS COMMIT
Boyer turned into the ace of the staff this spring for the Tigers who went 37-5 and took home the 2019 4A State Title. Boyer, who sits comfortably in the upper-80's with a swing-and-miss curveball, took a no-decision in the championship game going six innings, allowing two runs and striking nine. |
Shane Wilhelm RHP / SS / Columbia , IL / 2019MISSOURI COMMIT
Wilhelm has been one of the top arms in the Southern Illinois area for a few years now and he turned in yet another impressive spring for Columbia HS. Wilhelm struck out 95 in 61.1 innings and gave up only 28 hits on the season. |
CATCHERS
Angelo Cantelo C / 1B / Marian Catholic, IL / 2019LEWIS COMMIT
The Lewis University commit added 15 doubles, two triples, and four HR's for the Marian Catholic offense this spring. |
Jack Payton C / OF / Brother Rice, IL / 2020LOUISVILLE COMMIT
The Louisville commit was the main run-producer for the Brother Rice offense this season, driving in 46 runs behind 20 extra-base hits. |
FIRST BASEMAN
Justin Janas 1B / 3B / Marist, IL / 2019ILLINOIS COMMIT
Janas did it all for Marist this year, hitting .431 to go with a 2.03 ERA and 8-0 record on the mound. Will play under Dan Hartleb at the University of Illinois in the fall. |
Charlie Bennett C / 1B / Bremen, IL / 2019PURDUE-NORTHWEST COMMIT
A Purdue-Northwest commit -- Bennett was the guy for Bremen this spring, hitting a ridiculous .582 with 14 doubles, and 4 HR's. |
MIDDLE INFIELDERS
Brody Harding SS / 2B / Moline, IL / 2019ILLINOIS COMMIT
The Moline shortstop was an offensive force all season, hitting .392 with 14 extra-base hits all while playing lockdown defense at shortstop. On the season, Harding only struck out twice and swung-and-missed a total of eight times. |
Jalen Greer SS / 2B / St. Rita, IL / 2019MISSOURI COMMIT
Greer had a solid all-around spring for 4A State-Bound St. Rita -- hitting .344 with six doubles, five triples, and eight HR's. Another highlight of his season came on June 4th when he was selected in the 5th round of the MLB Draft by the Oakland Athletics. Greer later signed, forgoing his commitment to Missouri. |
Jack Hines SS / 3B / Willowbrook, IL / 2019UNCOMMITTED
Hines was a menace on the bases, going a perfect 30/30 on stolen base attempts. He also hit .464 with 11 doubles and 7 triples. |
Benji Brokemond SS / 2B / Brother Rice, IL / 2019MIAMI (OH) COMMIT
The Brother Rice shortstop and Miami (OH) commit was yet another Brother Rice position player to have a big spring -- hitting .451 with eight doubles, two triples, and four HR’s to go along with 31 RBI’s. |
THIRD BASEMAN
Casey Kmet 3B / C / St. Viator, IL / 2019NOTRE DAME COMMIT
The Notre Dame commit displayed his all-around versatility on the diamond this spring, hitting for power with 18 extra-base hits while also stealing 27 bases. |
OUTFIELDERS
Jeremiah Hurt OF / Lindblom, IL / 2020UNCOMMITTED
Hurt had a huge season at the dish, hitting .544 with a .607 on-base-percentage. The uncommitted junior also added 21 doubles and 58 RBI's. |
Cliff Vickers OF / Naperville North, IL / 2019COLLEGE OF DUPAGE JC COMMIT
Vickers was the biggest offensive force for a solid Naperville North offense under first-year Head Coach Jim Chapietta. Vickers hit .454 with nine doubles and 22 RBI's. |
Chase VanDerGinst OF / C / Rock Island Alleman, IL / 2019WESTERN ILLINOIS COMMIT
VanDerGinst followed up a junior season in which he received All-State honors with another monster senior year and a trip to 2A state. He hit .409 with 23 extra-base hits to go along with 44 RBI's and 40 stolen bases. |
Ryan Ross SS / York, IL / 2019CORNELL COMMIT
The Cornell commit hit .418 with a .564 on-base-percentage and 22 stolen bases in his senior season for the York Dukes. |
UTILITY
Jake Kmiecik INF / RHP / Metea Valley, IL / 2019HEARTLAND JC COMMIT
The Heartland JC commit did it all for Metea, hitting .434 with 19 extra-base hits while also pitching to a 1.29 ERA with 25 K’s over 22 innings of work for the Mustangs. |
Jake Kuntzendorf RHP / INF / AURORA CHRISTIAN, IL / 2020PURDUE COMMIT
Kuntzendorf emerged on the scene last spring when he helped lead Aurora Christian to the 1A State Title. The two-way talent, was back at it this season, getting them back to Peoria, this time in Class 2A. Kuntzendorf struck out 107 in just of 57 innings, only walked 15 and hit for power, collecting 13 extra-base hits on the season. |
Charlie Hodges RHP / INF / Delavan, IL / 2019PARKLAND JC COMMIT
Committed to play at Parkland CC in the fall, Hodges hit .444 with a 1.223 OPS on top of being the staff ace -- where he threw 47 innings and struck out 100. |
