The Underclass Invite took place on Sunday January 17th, at The MAX in McCook, IL. The event is for the top 2018 and 2019 prospects in Illinois, and it did not disappoint. Players took part in a pro style workout in front of the PBR scouting staff, many of whom are new to PBR.
Many players stood out at the event, noted mostly by many arms. 2018 RHP Jacob Maton from Chatham Glenwood emerged as one of the premier arms in the class running his fastball up to 89 mph complimented by a plus cutter, and also took an impressive round of BP. Maton has baseball bloodlines as both of his older brothers have been drafted. His oldest brother Phil was taken in the 20th round by the Padres out of Louisiana Tech this past June. Nick Maton was taken in the 40th round in 2015 by Oakland. Nick decided not to sign and is at Eastern Illinois.
2018 OF Brooks Coetzee put up big numbers in the workout throwing 89 mph from the outfield, running a 7.08 60-yard dash, and showing strength thru contact with 92 mph exit velocity from a tee.
2018 LHP Nathan Lavender impressed with an extremely quick arm working 85-86 mph with his fastball, to go along with a wipeout curveball.
Athletic OF/RHP Myles Norman from Morgan Park showed big offensive potential in batting practice and impressed with raw arm strength from the outfield and on the mound.
A complete recap of the event will be coming in the following weeks.
