Fall Top Prospect Games Preview

By John Nolan
PBR Virginia/DC

This weekend, Prep Baseball Report Virginia/DC will host its second annual Fall Prospect Games at James Madison University featuring members of the Classes of 2017 and 2018.

Last year’s event was held at Davenport Field on the campus of the University of Virginia on a cold weekend in early November and featured over 70 players from the Classes of 2016 and 2017. At this moment, 39 players that participated in that event have committed to attend Division I schools from the ACC, SEC, A10, MAC, Big South, WCC, CAA, Patriot League, Atlantic Sun, MEAC, SOCON, and the AAC. The event was also well attended by college coaches as over 30 schools were in attendance.

The 2016 class in Virginia is very deep, and that depth was on display at UVA last fall and was highlighted by Jake Agnos (LHP, Battlefield, East Carolina), Alex Amos (IF/RHP, Millbrook, Pittsburgh), John Callahan (MIF, Stone Bridge, George Mason), Pete Nielsen (MIF, James Madison, BYU), Robert Riddick (RHP, Flint Hill, Virginia Tech), and Rafi Vazquez (RHP/1B, Bishop O’Connell, Coastal Carolina), who are all currently ranked in the Top 20 in Virginia/DC, as well as numerous other players currently in the Top 50.

Also on display last year were a few of the Class of 2017’s top players, including Tyler Solomon (C, Battlefield, Vanderbilt) and Kyle Whitten (RHP, Osbourn Park, Virginia), who are currently ranked third and fourth in Virginia’s 2017 class.

This year’s event looks to be just as deep with talent as the 2014 Top Prospect Games, and will feature some players who have participated in other PBR events in the past, including Brian Rall (C, Patriot, 2018), who registered pop times in the 1.97-2.13 range at an event in September. Another catching prospect that will be in attendance is Matthew Thomas (C, Lake Braddock, 2018), who has posted pop times in the 2.16-2.18 range and has the makings of a middle of the lineup hitter. Power/speed prospect Gregory Ryan (MIF, Benedictine, 2018, Pittsburgh) will be in attendance. Outfielder Jake Jansen (OF, 2017, Patriot) has shown off his speed at PBR events in the past, running a 6.98 60 and getting down the line from the right side in 4.06. Jansen’s speed will be rivaled by that of Gary Fuller (3B, Stone Bridge, 2017), who has also run a 4.06 home to first at a PBR event and has thrown 83 across the diamond.

There will also be a number of talented arms on display, led by Derek Domecq (LHP/OF, Western Albemarle, 2018), who is coming off of a stellar freshman high school season last spring, and who was up to 79 last February at a PBR event. Also in attendance will be Stephen Gerade (RHP, TC Williams, 2017), who had one of the better sliders on display at the 2017 Prospect Games in July. Hunter Cochrane (RHP, Glen Allen, 2017) was up to 83 in June as he helped the Jaguars win the 4A State Championship.
