Positional Profile: RHP/OF
Body: 6-5, 190-pounds. Lean, athletic, highly projectable frame.
Delivery: Stretch only, slightly open front foot, medium/high controlled leg lift, pre-bend in back knee and rides down the mound, strides in line, athletic operation and finish.
Arm Action: RH. Long reach in the back out of the glove, transitions into a high 3/4 release.
FB: T93, 91-92 mph. Life out of the hand, jumps through the zone with carry and backspin (2400-2500 rpm). T2567, 2476 average rpm.
CB: 78-79 mph. Sharp 11/5 action, late bite, tight shape with above-average spin (+2500 rpm), landed for some strikes, missed up occasionally. T2595, 2440 average rpm.
CH: 84-86 mph. Thrown with near fastball arm-speed, slight run to the arm-side, kept mostly to arm-side, miss was low. T1755, 1573 average rpm.
RHP Bryce Koch (Barrington, 2024; Cincinnati commit) looked the part on Saturday afternoon in his outing. Koch is a slender 6-foot-5, 190-pounds that is a fluid mover downhill. Koch works from a stretch-only delivery and throws the ball from a loose, high ¾ slot. Koch’s arsenal was headlined by a high-80’s fastball that played in the 86-89 mph range, touching 90 mph with a spin rate range of 2300-2400+ rpm. Playing off his fastball was a mid-70’s breaker (2200+ rpm) that landed for strikes and induced some swing and miss. Koch had to work around trouble at times, but managed to leave his outing only surrendering one run and punching out five after four innings.
Verbally committed to Cincinnati.
RHP Bryce Koch (Barrington, 2024) was another member from Team Illinois at the PBR Future Games last summer who remains uncommitted and continues to show one of the higher ceilings in the class. Currently ranked No. 53 in Illinois’ 2024 class, the 6-foot-4, 190-pound, long-limbed, athletic, right-hander works primarily out of the stretch and is an easy mover down the mound with a drop and drive delivery that works slightly across his body. The arm works clean with acceleration out front, from a ¾ slot. Fastball worked in the zone 67% of the time and sat in the mid-80s, T87.3 mph (average 2429 rpm). Slider played out of a similar window as his fastball, flashing sweeping action at 76-77 mph. Koch rounded out his three-pitch mix with a changeup that he kills spin on at 82 mph with some run and sink action.
Uncommitted. Currently ranked No. 72 in the state. 6-foot-4, 190-pound frame, athletic and projectable with room to fill out. Came out of the ‘pen for Barrington and gave a brief, but impressive look in his one inning of work. He worked Exclusively out of the stretch, moving fluidly and athletically while working in-line down the mound with little perceived effort. His arm is quick and plays from a high ¾ window, creating a fastball that sat 89-90 mph with life through the zone. He flashed a sharp, two-plane breaking ball at 77-79 mph, kept down and playing off the fastball effectively. High-follow 2024 arm.
There were a trio of long levered right-handers who showed plenty of upside and present stuff to pitch at the next level. RHP Tom Ford (Lisle, 2024) is a long levered arm who’s body screams upside. His 6-foot-6, 185-pound frame brings an 89-91 mph fastball with presence in the strike zone. He showed an 11/5 curveball as well with similar feel and repeated a low and away location at 74-76 mph. Bryce Koch (Barrington, 2024), at 6-foot-4, 190-pounds, showed a lively fastball at 88-89 mph, topping at 90 mph with a hard sinking changeup. RHP Bryce Koch (Barrington, 2024) was easily one of the biggest winners from Tuesday’s event, catching our staff’s attention the second he walked into the park. The 6-foot-4, 180-pound Koch possesses all sorts of upside to his lean and lanky frame, looking to have plenty of room for added strength in the coming years. It's an easy and low-effort operation down the mound, moving with a tall/fall lower-half that stays in-line to the plate before transitioning into a ¾ to high ¾ slot. His fastball explodes out of the hand with some finish through the zone, sitting 85-87 mph while topping out at 88 mph (T2500 RPM). His changeup was his most consistent off-speed offering throughout his ‘pen, living at the bottom and under the zone while playing with fading action to the arm-side, 78-80 mph. Koch’s slider flashed above-average action at times, playing with sharp/late bite and depth at 74-75 mph, struggling with command down at-times but will easily be able to correct it with a higher starting point for the pitch.
