2023 PBR Illinois Second Team All-State

Just a few days ago, the PBR Illinois team released its First-Team All-State honors for the 2023 IHSA season. Today, we’re announcing the recipients of our Second-Team All-State honors. Given the amount of talent residing in the state, the Second-Team roster is stacked with selections representing all corners of Illinois.
Keep an eye out tomorrow when we release our Third-Team All-State.
But for now, and without further ado, here is the roster for the 2023 PBR Illinois’ Second-Team All-State.

A Chipola College commit, the 6-foot-5 Brown lands on our second team after compiling an impressive line on the mound. The righty hurler finished his spring season with 108 punch-outs in 70 innings pitched, compiling a 9-1 record with a 0.80 ERA and 0.57 WHIP. A Triad High School product, Brown registered 13 strikeouts in the Knights’ 1-0 regional championship victory over Highland after tossing eight innings and yielding just one hit. Brown’s strong play helped lead the Knights to their third straight Mississippi Valley Conference crown.

A Louisville signee, Detmers appears on our second team yet again, earning these same honors last year. As a senior this time around, he totaled 46 innings, striking out 77 while surrendering 20 hits. He allowed just three earned runs this season, pitching to a 0.45 ERA and 0.66 WHIP. One of the top arms in the Illinois’ 2023 class, Detmers is likely to hear his name called in the top rounds of the 2023 MLB Draft.

A Bradley commit, Roley finished his career in dominant fashion, going 7-1 on the mound with 107 strikeouts in 57.2 innings. He allowed four runs all year, pitching to a 0.49 ERA and 0.59 WHIP. Roley threw five shutouts on the year, and his season strikeout total was second all-time in Morton history, predominantly one of the top programs out of Central Illinois. He produced at the plate as well, slashing .406/.469/.653 with three home runs, 12 extra base hits and 31 RBIs.

A Louisville commit, Schlageter completed his prep career at Joliet Catholic Academy with a 20-3 overall record on the mound in three varsity seasons, including a 7-0 record in 2023 to help lead the Hilltoppers to their second straight IHSA Class 2A State Championship. Schlageter received the win in JCA’s 10-3 state semifinal victory over Quincy Notre Dame, allowing three runs on three hits while striking out eight in a complete-game effort. The southpaw pitched his team to victories over area powerhouses such as Brother Rice, Minooka, Naz and Viator, solidifying himself as one of the top arms in Illinois in the class of 2023. Schlageter finished the spring with a 1.47 ERA and 1.03 WHIP in 52.1 innings pitched, registering 69 strikeouts compared to just 16 walks on the season.

An Oklahoma signee, Infelise solidified himself as one of the top backstops in the Class of 2025 after turning in an impressive spring en route to being named the Chicago Catholic League Blue Player of the Year. The IHSBCA Class 4A All-State selection turned-in a .525/.636/.717 slash line with two home runs, 35 RBI’s, 13 doubles and 52 hits against a tough slate of opponents, and was an anchor for a Providence Catholic squad that finished with a 30-7-1 overall record. Infelise also continued to show his prowess behind the plate, registering a .984 fielding percentage on the season.

Committed to Elgin Community College, Weaver turned in a strong spring after compiling a .525/.625/.855 slash line with five home runs and 36 RBI’s. The 2023 Upstate-8 Conference Player of the Year, Weaver’s strong play both at the plate and behind the dish helped his Streamwood High School team to an Upstate-8 Conference Championship. Weaver finished with an impressive 24:5 walk-to-strikeout ratio, and stole 27 bases for the Sabres on the season.

A John A. Logan signee, Connors rounded-out an outstanding prep career at Lincoln-Way East with another solid season at the plate to help lead the Griffins to a Class 4A Sectional Championship. The Southwest Suburban All-Conference selection finished the spring with a .362/.544/.724 slash line with eight home runs, 51 RBI’s and 38 runs scored for the Griffins. Connors currently holds Lincoln-Way East career records in RBI’s (83) and on-base percentage (.555) across 238 plate appearances, and ranks third all-time in slugging percentage, fourth in triples, walks, and career batting average and fifth in home runs.

Fleming played a crucial role for York this season as his performance landed him on our second team this season. He slashed .485/.569/.938 across 97 AB where he tallied 47 hits and launched 10 home runs. The power and feel for contact translated from the right-handed box where Fleming did his damage. The numbers at the plate were coupled with impressive defensive performances. Just a sophomore, Fleming’s numbers make him a player to follow in the Illinois’ 2025 class.

An Indiana signee, Malamazian lands on our second team after continuing to impress as one of the top shortstops in Illinois’ class of 2024. Malamazian, who has manned the shortstop position for Nazareth Academy since his freshman season, ended the spring with a .528/.593/.944 slash line with five long-balls, 32 RBI’s and 27 runs scored across 72 at-bats. Malamazian was a mainstay for a Nazareth Academy club that captured its second straight IHSA Class 3A State Championship this past spring. In the state championship game against Grayslake Central, Malamazian finished going 1-for-3 at the plate while also closing the contest out on the mound, tossing two scoreless frames to secure the victory for the Roadrunners.

An Xavier commit, Mensik proved why he is one of the top middle infield products in Illinois’ class of 2024 while serving as an anchor for Lincoln-Way Central this spring. Mensik finished the season with a .419/.513/.705 slash line with six home runs, 44 RBI’s and 46 runs scored across 129 at-bats while also providing some of the most reliable defense in the state up the middle.

Tenuta has been a two-way standout in the state for the past three seasons, already holding two IHSA All-State selections to his name and a Metro Conference Player of the Year award. In his three years on varsity, St. Francis went 69-32 with three Regionals and a Sectional Championship. At the plate this past season, Tenuta turned in a .491 batting average in 106 at-bats with five home runs, one triple, 10 doubles, 33 RBIs, 36 runs scored, an OBP of .596, SLG % of .745, OPS of 1.341, and perhaps his most impressive stat - 19 walks to only four strikeouts. On the mound, the right-hander fired 61.2 innings to pair with an 8-3 record, 89 strikeouts, 0.63 ERA and nine complete games.

Holy Cross commit. Royer made 2023 a season to remember, being named the Player of the Year in the North Suburban Conference while also setting the school career record for hits, runs scored and stolen bases. In 116 at-bats, Royer recorded a .491 batting average with eight home runs, four triples, 12 doubles, 28 RBIs, 48 runs scored, 22 strikeouts to just nine walks, an OBP of .573, SLG % of .871, OPS of 1.444 and 29 stolen bases.

North Central College commit. Kujak was named SPC Conference MVP and holds school records for hits and runs scored. In 2023, Kujak turned in a .451 batting average in 113 at-bats with eight home runs, one triple, 16 doubles, 40 RBIs, 46 runs scored and more walks than strikeouts.

Wright State commit. Warren is a three time All-Conference player in the Western Big 6. This season was perhaps his best to date, cruising to a .455 batting average in 123 at-bats with five home runs, six triples, 15 doubles, 42 RBIs, 42 runs scored, only eight strikeouts, an OBP of .482, SLG % of .797, and 12 stolen bases. He also played a lockdown centerfield to make himself one of the more well-rounded players in the area.

The Northern Illinois commit fits the trend of impressive two-way contributors, as he dominated on both sides of the ball for Shelbyville this past season. A unanimous First Team All-Conference selection, Brachbill broke the school season and career strikeouts record, career wins record, and career ERA record. In 49.2 innings, the right-hander collected an 8-1 record with 104 strikeouts, 10 walks, a 0.85 ERA and WHIP of 0.62 - also firing four complete games with one perfect game and a 20 strikeout game. At the plate, he hit his way to a .472 average in 89 at-bats with two home runs, two triples, 11 doubles, 22 RBIs, 40 runs scored, an OBP of .588, SLG % of .708, OPS of 1.296 and 19 stolen bases.

Parcell took home his share of hardware over the course of his prep career; being named CSL Player of the Year twice, All-Area Captain, Maine West Athlete of the Year, and being inducted into the Maine West Hall of Fame. This past season was perhaps his best to date, as he hit his way to a .566 average in 83 at-bats with one home run, five triples, eight doubles, 29 RBIs, 25 runs scored, an OBP of .654, SLG % of .891, OPS of 1.473 and 18 stolen bases - also now holding the Maine West record for highest batting average and OBP in a single season. His pitching numbers were equally staggering, as he collected a perfect 8-0 record in 53 innings with 89 strikeouts (Maine West single season record), a 1.05 ERA and WHIP of 1.18.

The 2023 Gateway Metro Conference Player of the Year, Smith played a crucial role for Father McGivney this past season on both sides of the ball. The Ole Miss commit was the ace of the talented pitching staff, firing 36 innings with a 6-1 record, 60 strikeouts, 1.94 ERA and WHIP of 1.00 - with his only loss coming to 2A State Runner-Up, Columbia. His offensive numbers were eye-popping as well, as he hit his way to a .439 clip in 98 at-bats with a .539 OBP, .837 SLG %, 1.376 OPS, eight home runs, one triple, 13 doubles, 47 RBIs, 37 runs scored, and more walks than strikeouts. Smith is the all-time school leader in average, hits, RBIs, doubles, home runs and total bases.
