Top Prospect Games at Wright State University: Class of 2020 and 2021 - Preview

On July 24th, PBR Ohio will be hosting the Top Prospect Games - Class of 2020 & 2021 at Wright State University.

This invitation only event will feature the best identified, uncommitted Class of 2020 and 2021 prospects from Ohio at Wright State University at Nischwitz Stadium.

This will also serve as a final tryout for the remaining spots on Team Ohio for the 2018 Future Games.

We will only have one session for this event with players participating in a pregame workout and then breaking down into two teams for an extended simulated game or two smaller simulated games.

The Two-Way Prospects

Each positional group listed below in alphabetical order. Most recent reports are listed below. Each positional group will be updated up until the 24th.

Adam Beery LHP / 1B / Rootstown, OH / 2021

Report: Adam had a bright future. Two-way prospect who is a definite follow on the bump but his bat headlines his tools. A whippy yet powerful swing (88 mph) from the left side. Can spray it both sides of the field with impressive juice to oppo gap. A high average type that will show occasional power. At first base he brings above average athleticism for the spot (7.29 60-yard dash). Looks the part over there, projecting as an above average defender (77 mph). The southpaw varies tempo, starting with a quicker pace going into a slight pause at balance point. Leg lift is chest high before getting into his load and stride. Arm is clean with whip through a high-¾ slot. A low effort guy with an easy 77-79 mph. Spins a sweeping, 2/8 shaped breaking ball with feel at 64-67 mph. The pitch has potential to grow into a well above average offering, already showing depth/sharpness. Also showed feel for his 70-72 mph changeup that has late action.

Teddy Eyink RHP / 1B / St. Ignatius, OH / 2020

Report: 6-foot-3, 190-pound. Projectable right-handed pitcher. Works at a moderate tempo with regular effort and a strong lower half. Long arm action working through a ¾ slot. Fastball works downhill with some arm side run at 79-84 MPH. Only secondary offering is a 11/5 breaking ball which has developing depth to it. Upside is on the bump but abilities as a position player are worth noting. Middle of the lineup type bat from the right side and an above average defender at first base. With his size, physicality and arm strength he will be a guy college coaches will take a serious look at.
60-yard dash: 7.13
Infield Velocity: 86
Exit Velocity: 91

Fastball works downhill with some arm side run at 79-84 MPH. Only secondary offering is a 11/5 breaking ball which has developing depth to it. Upside is on the bump but abilities as a position player are worth noting. Middle of the lineup type bat from the right side and an above average defender at first base. With his size, physicality and arm strength he will be a guy college coaches will take a serious look at.

Brody Rice RHP / OF / Blanchester, OH / 2021

Report: Really physical prospect for his class at 6-foot-3, 190-pounds. On the mound he shows nice rhythm to a drop and drive type delivery. Has some counter rotation during the leg lift. Shows good direction in the stride landing closed at foot contact. Uses a long arm action though a ¾ slot. Fastball is easy of out the hand sitting 79-83 on a downward plane. Only secondary offering was a 11/5 breaking ball with developing depth. Rice shows good feel for that pitch at 66-68 MPH. A right-handed hitter that starts in a balanced setup. Hands stay quiet during leg kick timing trigger. Physical kid with a ton of juice for class. Ball looks different off his bat. Advanced strength to hands with above average bat speed as well. Swing has loft allowing him to lift the baseball without sacrificing natural tools. Shows all the signs of a future power bat down the road. In the infield he looks comfortable and plays with obvious confidence. Third baseman frame with well above average ball skills, With his frame and arm he likely ends up at third base in college. Also impressed on the bump, running it up to 83 mph with an above average breaking ball. Promising young talent. D1 Follow.

Sebastian Gongora OF / LHP / Chaminade Julianne, OH / 2020

Report: 6-4, 185-pound left-handed hitting two-way prospect with athletic build. This will be our first time seeing Sebastian in showcase action, but the two-way prospect batted in the cleanup spot for the division II state champions in the spring. Reports have Gongora in the low-to-mid-80s on the bump while also featuring a smooth swing at the plate.

The Arms

Each positional group listed in alphabetical order. Most recent reports are listed below. Each positional group will be updated up until the 24th.

Noah Arkenburg RHP / 3B / Notre Dame Cathedral Latin, OH / 2020

Report: 6-foot, and 195-pound. Arkenburg is a long limbed, sturdy right hander who uses a delivery that requires a little more than moderate effort. Uses a drop and drive style while being aggressive with the lower half and occasionally falling off to 1B. Balls comes out of a high-¾ slot after a long, loose arm action. Fastball showed some arm side run and worked between 82-85 mph, up to 86 mph. The curveball is a very nice secondary offering. Throw with a near 12/6 shape this pitch is sharp with depth at 70-73 mph. The pitch shows power potential as it is spun tight and feel continues to evolve. With some cleaning up and more efficient use of the lower half a velo jump is to be expected.

Jack Ballas LHP / OF / Strongsville, OH / 2021

Report: A long-limbed left-handed pitching prospect with room to add strength. Ballas works at a moderate tempo, delivery is smooth and repeatable. Uses a long arm action working through a ¾ slot. The fastball works downhill with late cutting action while sitting 79-82 mph. Best secondary offering was a 1/7 breaking ball, at 63-68 mph the pitch has swing and miss potential at the high school level. Also, showed a changeup that sat 68-71 mph with occasional cut. At 6’4” Ballas is a must follow through the spring/summer seasons.

Patrick Copen RHP / 3B / Parkersburg Catholic, WV / 2020

Report: 6/13/18 - It was our first look at Copen and he proved to be a scholarship level arm that will be a high follow for college coaches. Uber projectable frame at 6-foot-5, 185-pounds with a high waist and broad shoulders. Fastball was up to 87 mph predominantly sitting 85-86 mph. Spins a tight, heavy breaking ball at 73-74 mph and also flashed a splitter that has some dive to it. Reminds me a bit delivery wise of Olentangy Liberty’s Jack Metzger. Although future looks brighter on the mound he also worked out as a position guy. A righty swinger that starts in a balanced setup. Very projectable, long levered frame. Uses a double tap for timing while keeping hands simple. Path is uphill with a balanced offering of strength and speed to hands. Lifts the ball naturally. Expect much more pop as he fills out that projectable frame. At third base he possesses the frame for the position. Moves well in and out of funnel with more athletic actions on the move. Ball skills stay to both sides.

Dominic Chiavaroli LHP / 1B / Upper Arlington, OH / 2021

Report: 6-foot-4, 182 pound, long frame with room to add muscle. The left hander has a quick delivery to the plate and throws from a ¾ arm slot. He pushes very hard off of his back leg, landing very far down the mound while reaching far back on the fastball. His fastball has some natural run to it, busting left handed hitters in on the hands at 75-80 mph. The arm speed on his changeup was similar to the fastball and had a slight drop to it at 65-69. He does a good job staying slightly closed, but tends to finish tall.

Connor Frazier RHP / OF / Jackson, OH / 2020

Report: 6-foot-3, 200-pound. Right-handed pitcher with a strong frame. Uses a slow to moderate tempo delivery that require some effort strong lower half and good direction to the plate. Fastball sat mostly 79-85 mph out of a high three-quarter slot with regular cutting action. Breaking ball has near 12-6 shape and is fairly sharp at 67-69 mph. Also offered a developing changeup that has cut/sink action at 75-78 mph.

Levi Gazarek RHP / SS / North Baltimore, OH / 2020

Report: 6-foot-5, 215-pound strong, athletic, projectable right-handed pitcher. Low to moderate effort in the delivery, tall and fall type lower half. Fastball works down hill out of a high-3/4 slot with slight run at 83-86 mph. Slows down the arm on 11-5 shaped breaking ball which sat 64-67 mph. Also features a splitter at 69-72 mph with tumble and sink action.

Brennan Mccune RHP / 3B / Dover, OH / 2021

Report: McCune came on to the scene in a big way with this outing. 6-foot-1, 180-pound prospect with more physical maturation left on frame. Works with an uptempo pace to a delivery that has some effort. Loose, live arm with obvious strength. Fastball comes out well, sitting 84-88 mph with more 87s than anything. The pitch is heavy while working downhill. Offspeed has room to improve but a ‘21 with that velocity will attract D1 attention.

Tyler Ronevich RHP / 3B / Central Crossing, OH / 2020

Report: The 6-foot-5, lanky, long limbed right handed arm had made a significant jump since this winter and he may not be done yet. Definitely seems to be working more efficiently mechanically and does a better job of carrying his momentum down the hill directionally toward home plate. The big leg lift requires some effort, but does a nice job of working downhill creating two planes. Fastball sat 83-85 mph staying true through the zone with life. Also used a 2 seam FB that showed occasional arm side sink at 81-82 mph. Curveball was sharp with near 12/6 break at 70-75 mph that was used to strike out 3 batters during the short outing. One of the more projectable arms from the entire event. With continued physical development this arm will be one to continue to follow.

Ethan Tedder RHP / 3B / Beavercreek, OH / 2020

Report: 6-foot-1, 175-pound. Right-handed pitching prospect with a thing build. Quick tempo delivery with a drop in Dr. lower half. Uses a long arm action and low three-quarter slot. Offers a true three pitch mix. Fastball shows regular sink and run at 80-82 mph. Best secondary offering is a late breaking 10-4 slider with swing and miss potential at 68-71 mph. Also flashed a 75-76 mph changeup with late sink.

Landon Willeman RHP / 3B / Napoleon, OH / 2020

Report: 5-foot-11, and 160-pound right-handed pitcher. Willeman showed a lot of pitch-ability at this years TPG event. He works at a good pace and pitches with confidence. Delivery is fluid and easy. Fastball worked out of a high-3/4 slot showing regular cutting action sitting 82-86 MPH. A sharp breaking 12/6 curveball is the pitch that stands out the most, at 70-73 MPH, the pitch has a makings of a plus secondary offering. Willeman also flashed a changeup at 75-77 MPH, the pitch has some sink and plays well off the fastball. Brother, Zach, went to Kent State and was drafted by the Dodgers

Gavin Wolf RHP / SS / Grove City, OH / 2020

Report: 6-foot-1, 185-pound.Right-handed pitching prospect with an athletic build. Wolf works at a quicker tempo, the delivery has some deception to it and requires some effort. There’s some quickness to the arm coming out of his ¾ slot. Fastball works on a downhill plane with some arm side run at 82-86 MPH. Changeup has good arm speed to it and shows consistent cutting action at 73-75 MPH. Breaking ball flashed above average at times, the shape in near 12/6 with some bite to it.

The Catchers

Each positional group listed in alphabetical order. Most recent reports are listed below. Each positional group will be updated up until the 24th.

Benny Hymes C / 2B / Jackson, OH / 2020

Report: A right-handed hitter that starts in a balanced setup. Uses a leg lift for timing and energy. Barrel stays fluid prior to launch. Path is level with obvious natural tools through the zone. Produces easy backspin to both sides of the field. Shoots his legs to get through quick, allowing hands more room to work and get to the baseball. Ball jumps off of bat, swing converted to live pitching as well. Shows all the signs of a middle of the lineup guy at the next level.  Behind the plate he has an ideal frame for the position. Uses clean, athletic footwork. Exchange skills are above average for his age. Arm strength is there, arm accuracy is developing. Smooth transfers.

Collin Kennedy C / OF / Bedford, OH / 2020

Report: A lefty swinger that starts in a balanced setup. Uses a leg kick for timing, showing a slight back load with hands. Launches from a balanced setup before showing an intent driven swing through the zone. Path has some loft and he can do damage when he finds the barrel. Run producer type that took one of the louder BPs of the day. Behind the dish he has a physical frame, starting in a mid crouch. Feet are quick, creating positive direction. Exchange skills are on par for class. Threw with accuracy to second base.

Kory Klingenbeck C / SS / Elder, OH / 2020

Report: Turned in the top showing defensively of all the catchers at the event. In the defensive eval he popped between 1.84-1.91, while showing off impressive arm strength for class. Athleticism shows up in game with his ability to block and receive. Also impressed at the plate. A true switch hitter with gap abilities from both sides. Although he has a higher ceiling behind the dish he also showed above average abilities up the middle of the infield as well.
Home to 1st: 4.64
Pop Times: 1.84-1.91
Catcher Velocity: 79
Infield Velocity: 80
Exit Velocity: 88

John Zigmond C / SS / Moeller, OH / 2020

Report: One of the more projectable prospects at the catcher position. Possesses an ideal frame at 6-foot-2, 175-pounds and should only get more physical over the next few years. An above average athlete back there as well. Really liked what I saw in game and he flashed the biggest arm out of all the catchers in attendance. Hit tool has some room to improve but that should come naturally as strength arrives.
60-yard dash: 7.58
Pop Times: 1.9-2.04
Catcher Velocity: 79

The Middle Infielders

Each positional group listed in alphabetical order. Most recent reports are listed below. Each positional group will be updated up until the 24th.

Jake Armsey SS / RHP / Walsh Jesuit, OH / 2021

Report: A righty swinger that starts in a balanced setup. Load is fluid and efficient. Launches from a balanced position and takes a slightly downhill path to contact. Very efficient swing with more pop on the way as he twitches up. Actions are fluid and athletic in the infield. Can create angles and maintain rhythm. Ball skills are well ahead of the curve for class as well.
60-yard dash: 7.51
Infield Velocity: 76
Exit Velocity: 82

Sean Springer SS / 2B / Holy Name, OH / 2020

Report: One of, if not the top position player we saw throughout the entire event. A lefty swinger that has athletic movements throughout swing sequence. Path is compact, showing a nice/compact stroke. Laced line drives to both gaps in BP with more natural flight to his pull side. Had 4 hits in game, including 3 extra base hits. In the infield he has a skill set that plays up the middle with a chance to stay at the shortstop position. Not flashy but ball skills are advanced, making a ton of difficult plays look routine in game. A scholarship level prospect who will shoot up recruiting boards as he becomes more physical.
60-yard dash: 7.22
Home to 1st: 4.47
Infield Velocity: 81
Exit Velocity: 86

Alex Streitenberger 2B / 3B / Gahanna Lincoln, OH / 2020

Report: Every time we see Alex he mashes. Sees the ball incredibly well, rarely leaving the zone. When he does pull the trigger he has a knack for finding the barrel and more than dynamic enough to damage when he connects. A bit limited in where he can play defensively likely ending up at second base or a corner spot in the outfield but his hit tool will attract D1 attention this summer.
60-yard dash: 6.85
Infield Velocity: 84
Exit Velocity: 93

AJ Solomon 2B / OF / Chaminade Julienne, OH / 2021

Report: 5-8, 140-pound left-handed hitter with athletic build. This will be our first time seeing AJ in showcase action, but the second basemen batted in the 3-hole for the division II state champions in the spring.

Josh Romans SS / RHP / Jackson, OH / 2020

Report: One of the more reliable players in the 2020 class. A sure-handed defender and really tough out at the plate. Defensively, he has a fringy skill set that plays up the middle. Not a flashy guy but makes the routine play consistently and can make the difficult play on the move. At the plate he has added some physicality since we saw him last, looking to be more of a gap threat than we saw last summer.
60-yard dash: 6.95
Infield Velocity: 75
Exit Velocity: 85

Tyler Pettorini SS / 3B / Walsh Jesuit, OH / 2021

Report: Coach Kaczmar from Walsh is very high on this kid and it’s easy to see why. Swings it from the left side and is one of the more dynamic bats we’ve come across the in state’s 21 class. Swing has natural loft with advanced natural tools through the zone. Ball looks different off his bat than the typical ‘21. Turns on the ball with authority and has the present ability to leave the park. A bit of a tweener defensively but athletic enough to grow at whichever spot he ends up at. With his advanced hit tool he will be a high follow for colleges over the next few years.
60-yard dash: 6.89
Infield Velocity: 79
Exit Velocity: 95

The Corner Infielders

Each positional group listed in alphabetical order. Most recent reports are listed below. Each positional group will be updated up until the 24th.

Brendan Holley 1B / 3B / Elyria Catholic, OH / 2020

Report: Starts in a tall, open setup from the right side. Movements are fluid and athletic prior to launch, creating both energy and balance. A physical bat that stays balanced throughout swing. Stroke is intent drive, generating present gap pop. Should see power come out as he adds loft to swing. Handled velocity well in game. At first base he has the frame and above average athleticism for the position. Looks to have feel for the spot, varying depth to create throwing lanes prior to tossing it to second base on double play balls. Looks to be an above average defender in general over there.
60-yard dash: 7.59
Infield Velocity: 65
Exit Velocity: 91

Harrison Johnson 3B / OF / Mason, OH / 2020

Report: Left-handed hitter that starts in an open setup. Natural tools are well above average for age. Stands out for his strength at the plate. Loading sequence is fluid and efficient. Path is level with early bat speed. Present gap to gap pop, showing signs of power potential to come. Middle fo the order type guy. Very impressive showing at third base. Actions are athletic and confident. Showed feel around the bag and well above average glove skills. Has the lateral mobility and arm strength to stay at the position.
60-yard dash: 7.37
Infield Velocity: 78
Exit Velocity: 89

Robby Morgan C / 1B / Groveport, OH / 2020

Report: Morgan is an upside prospect that will get D1 looks over the next year or so. Has very good size with above average athleticism for frame. A corner prospect defensively that would be a solid defender at third with advanced abilities at first base. Bat has big upside. A long lever type that has a chance to be a beast physically if he adds strength. Already offers present gap abilities ot both sides of the field with power potential in there. Very interesting prospect.
60-yard dash: 7.43
Infield Velocity: 77
Exit Velocity: 84

The Outfielders

Each positional group listed in alphabetical order. Most recent reports are listed below. Each positional group will be updated up until the 24th.

Drew Collins OF / OF / Oregon Clay, OH / 2020

Report: A lefty swinger at the plate with a simple loading sequence. Hands are loose and swing shows obvious whip through the zone. Very efficient swing in general. Line drive guy with much more to come as he adds strength. Definite bat to follow. Actions are fluid and easy in the outfield. Functionally athletic enough to play multiple spots.
60-yard dash: 7.09
Outfield Velocity: 78
Exit Velocity: 87

Ian Cox OF / RHP / Loveland, OH / 2020

Report: 6-foot, 160-pounds. Really good athlete with an impressive combination of both strength and twitch. Swing is compact with a nice path. Ball jumps off the bat, generating present gap pop with the ability to use either gap. Stood out in the outfield. Athleticism really shows out there, playing fast without compromising ball security. Arm is a big tool, projecting for even more strength as he matures physically.
60-yard dash: 6.90
Outfield Velocity: 84
Exit Velocity: 85

Michael Knapp OF / RHP / Elyria, OH / 2020

Report: A physical prospect with loud natural tools. Flies around the outfield, playing with obvious confidence as he attacks the ball. Gets to and through quickly and athletically. Arm plays an above average tool, showing solid strength and carry. At the plate he has a fluid/efficient loading sequence followed by a compact/slightly downhill stroke. Bat speed and strength both grade out as above average tools. Can drive the ball with authority. Run producer type bat.
60-yard dash: 6.85
Outfield Velocity: 84
Exit Velocity: 93

Tyler Mintz OF / RHP / Kenston, OH / 2020

Report: Mintz continues to impress on both sides of the ball. At the plate he possesses above average natural tools through the zone with a ton of feel for the barrel. Ball comes off his well and path allows him to lift the ball without sacrificing natural tools. Constant extra base hit threat. A good athlete in the outfield with a left/center field skill set. Plays fast with fluidity. Arm is an above average tool as well. Scholarship level prospect that will attract D1 attention.
60-yard Dash: 6.74
Outfield Velocity: 83
Exit Velocity: 92

AJ Rausch OF / SS / Olentangy Liberty, OH / 2020

Report: A well-rounded player whose skill set is headlined by his 6.6 speed. Although the footspeed in impressive he is much more of a baseball player that can run vs a guy who can run trying to play baseball. Movements are efficient and body unlocks well at the plate. Hands are loose and he creates a ton of space for them to work freely through the zone. More of a line drive threat than a gap guy presently but he did flash the ability to drive the ball to pull side in BP. Defensively he shows signs of being able to stick in center with the basement of an above average defender in left.
60-yard dash: 6.63
Outfield Velocity: 82
Exit Velocity: 91

Evan Wolf OF / RHP / Gahanna Lincoln, OH / 2020

Report: Athleticism really shows in the outfield. Plays fast and displays impressive ball skills through fielding. Arm is accurate and grades out as a well above average tool for class. At the plate he has efficient movements prior to launch that create consistent timing and energy. Stays balanced throughout swing, balancing intent and control well. Ball jumps presently with more to come as strength arrives. Interesting follow.  Athleticism really shows in the outfield. Plays fast and displays impressive ball skills through fielding. Arm is accurate and grades out as a well above average tool for class.
60-yard dash: 7.56
Home to 1st: 4.54
Outfield Velocity: 86
Exit Velocity: 86

Cole Zak OF / LHP / Mayfield, OH / 2020

Report: The only knock that has ever been on Zak is will he become physical enough to be a top prospect in his class. Slowly but surely he is starting to answer that question, gradually becoming more physical each time we see him. This time the added strength was most obvious at the plate. Swing showed more intent and with added juice while maintaining his same fluid, pretty stroke we’ve see in past. Also turned in his best 60-time to date and showed his typical LF/CF skill set in the outfield.
60-yard dash: 6.80
