By Jacob Gill
Philadelphia Region Director of Scouting

The 2015 PBR Pennsylvania Top Prospect Games took place on June 16-17 at Hank DeVincent Field on the campus of La Salle University. 88 prospects from around the state showcased their abilities in front of nearly 40 college coaches in attendance. Today is the fourth of six installments of player evaluations from the event, with outfielders broken down by graduating class.

Class of 2016

Greyson Avots, 2016, OF, Conestoga

5-foot-11, 205-pound right-handed hitter. Hits from relaxed set up, rocks weight to backside and takes short stride to square, body comes forward some with stride. Swing has length, but he has some strength in his frame. Ran a 4.60 in-game home-to-1B time. Throws from over-the-top slot, arm strength of 81-mph in workout.

Luciano Besh, 2016, OF, Franklin Regional
5-foot-10, 170-pound right-handed hitter who is a primary left-handed pitcher. Relaxed set up, simple approach, not too many moving parts. Starts from square stance and takes short stride with some dive toward home plate. Some gap power potential (87-mph exit velo) and logged 85-mph arm strength in workout.

Joe DiProsperos, 2016, OF, St. Joseph’s Prep
6-foot-1, 180-pound right-handed hitter. Hits from square stance and takes short stride. Creates armbar in load, but still flashes some batspeed with pull-oriented approach in game action. Some gap power potential (86-mph exit velo). Below average arm strength, long release, arced trajectory on throws project him as a left fielder.

Joe Ferretti, 2016, OF, Roman Catholic
5-foot-9, 170-pound right-handed hitter. Starts from a slightly open stance and gets more open with stride.  Would benefit from additional physical strength and keeping bat in hitting zone longer. Got injured during day one of event, so only logged two plate appearances and was not present for defensive workout.

Bobby Heck, 2016, OF, Archbishop Wood
5-foot-11, 180-pound left-handed hitter. Starts from square stance and strides slightly closed. Simple, quiet approach, flashes some barrel whip and bat speed. Will work around the ball at times, while generating occasional loft. Has some foot speed, logging a 4.28 in-game home-to-1B time and a 4.41 time on a turn. Tracked ball well on defense while posting 78-mph arm strength in workout.

Zane Hershey, 2016, OF, Shippensburg Area
5-foot-8, 135-pound left-handed hitter. Starts from slightly open stance and strides to square. Lack of physical strength had him bodying the bat through the zone, creating some length and causing inconsistent barrel position at contact in BP. Really battled well during his in-game at-bats, however, including opposite field line drive single against a solid LHP. Tracked ball well on defense and worked through his throws, allowing his 76-mph arm strength to play up a bit.

Jack Larini, 2016, OF, Abington
5-foot-10, 170-pound right-handed hitter. Aggressive approach with some gap power (87-mph exit velo). Starts from square stance, employs knee-to-knee toe-tap stride to a wide base. Body comes forward with stride and eye level sinks, but does a nice job staying inside the baseball. Was a HR short of the cycle in two games. Showcased accurate 82-mph arm strength in workout with low trajectory on throws.

Langston Livingston, 2016, OF, La Salle
6-foot-3, 195-pound left-handed hitter. Starts from a square, relaxed stance, rocks to backside employing a knee-to-knee stride, and lands slightly closed. Has an easy swing with some power potential (89-mph exit velo). Recorded 79-mph arm strength in workout that could improve as he learns to get his stride foot completely around toward his target.

Alex Myers, 2016, OF, Central York
6-foot-2, 175-pound right-handed hitter. Starts from slightly open stance, employs knee-to-knee stride to square. Armbar created during load/separation, rocks to backside leading to a significant amount of head and body movement.  Got injured during day one of event, so only logged two plate appearances. Showcased 79-mph arm strength in workout, using accurate, one-hop throws. Needs to improve reads and routes defensively.

Isaac Neal, 2016, OF, Parkland
6-foot, 175-pound right-handed hitter. Starts from a slightly open stance and strides to square with some top half dive toward the plate. Will flash bat speed with gap power potential (86-mph exit velo) despite a barrel wrap that adds length to his swing. Showcased 87-mph arm strength in workout from a low three-quarter slot that caused his throws to tail.

Austin Wacker, 2016, OF, Cumberland Valley
5-foot-6, 160-pound right-handed hitter. Hits from a slightly open stance with controlled toe-tap. Short, compact swing with direct path to the baseball. Posted a 4.41 in-game home-to-1B time and a 4.50 on a turn. Showcased 86-mph arm strength in workout, played through ball well with feet, throws have carry.

Charlie Warden, 2016, OF, Ephrata
6-foot-2, 180-pound right-handed hitter. Has gotten body in tremendous shape following a spring in which he suffered an upper body injury and ran track instead of playing baseball. Starts from open stance, takes knee-to-knee stride to square. Uphill path with some bat speed. Spins on backside with limited weight transfer and cuts off finish. Moves well defensively, foot speed played better underway in the outfield and on the bases than out of the box (logged two 4.50 in-game home-to-1B times).

Class of 2017

Brayden Clair, 2017, OF, Elizabethtown Area

6-foot-3, 190-pound right-handed hitter with room to add strength, especially to upper half. Starts slightly open, strides to square, utilizes inside out approach with uphill path. Deep launch point creates some length with occasional spin on backside. Ran balls down well on defense. Long arm action and release with max workout arm strength of 86-mph on accurate throws with low trajectory.

Jack Dougherty, 2017, OF, Shipley School
5-foot-9, 160-pound right-handed hitter who is a primary right-handed pitcher. Hits from square stance and keeps eyes level during swing. Creates armbar in load with some length and loop in swing path. Would benefit from additional physical strength. Showed accurate, 81-mph arm strength in workout with low trajectory on throws.

Brian Farabaugh, 2017, OF, North Hills
6-foot, 190-pound right-handed hitter. Starts from square stance with relaxed set-up. Employs knee-to-knee stride in balanced swing, keeping eyes level with slightly uphill path. Has some strength in frame with power potential (90-mph exit velo). Only participated on day one of event, so was not present for defensive workout.

James Gabor, 2017, OF, Penn Charter
6-foot-3, 175-pound left-handed hitter. Has some foot speed, recording a 4.31 in-game home-to-1B time and a 4.41 time on a turn. Started slightly open and strode to slightly closed in BP, but flipped his feet to a slightly closed start and striding to slightly open in game action. Upright stance with weight on back leg, minimal load, flashes bat speed with a slightly uphill path. Athletic actions with long strides in outfield, logged 79-mph arm strength in workout.

Michael Geesaman, 2017, OF, Lower Dauphin
5-foot-11, 170-pound left-handed hitter. Starts from slightly open stance with relaxed set-up, rocks weight to backside, and strides to slightly closed. Hides hands in load and creates armbar, both of which add some length to his path, but hands have some looseness. Got self out by chasing pitches up out of the zone in game action. Moved well defensively and showcased solid, 87-mph arm strength in workout, using accurate, one-hop throws with low trajectory.

Steve Lorenz, 2017, OF, Penn Charter
6-foot-2, 180-pound left-handed hitter. Starts from a slightly open stance and employs a vertically-oriented stride to slightly closed. Eyes and hands rise during load/separation. With more incorporation of his backside into his swing, would better be able to tap into the power that his frame portends. Showed some foot speed, logging a 4.35 in-game home-to-1B time and a 4.41 on a turn. Moved well defensively and showcased accurate 87-mph arm strength in workout with quick release and low trajectory on throws.

Quinn McKenna, 2017, OF, Spring-Ford
6-foot-2, 195-pound right-handed hitter with power potential (93-mph exit velo) and solid foot speed (4.37 in-game home-to-1B time). Starts from a square stance and strides to a wide base. Barrel wrap creates some length in swing, but flat path through hitting zone allowed him to consistently put the barrel on the baseball during his BP round. Showcased 83-mph arm strength in workout, using accurate, one-hop throws with low trajectory.

Frankie Montecalvo, 2017, OF, Bishop Guilfoyle Catholic
5-foot-10, 165-pound right-handed hitter with strong forearms. Starts from an open stance and stays open with his stride. Hand path is uphill, but will flash some bat speed that helps him generate a 93-mph exit velo. Finishes swing on heels, so his straight line speed plays better underway than out of the box. Posted 78-mph arm strength during workout.

Curtis Robison, 2017, OF, Northern York
6-foot-1, 195-pound left-handed hitter with room to add strength to his frame. Starts from an open stance, loads hands in close to his body, and strides to square. Swing is athletic and he showed a definite feel for the barrel in BP, while he cuts off his finish at times. Smoked an opposite field single off an 87-mph fastball in his first at-bat, then hooked over a number of ground balls against lower velocity as the event wore on. Moved well defensively and showcased 83-mph arm strength in workout the day after topping at 84-mph on the mound.

Chase Smith, 2017, OF, Central
5-foot-10, 165-pound right-handed hitter. Starts from a slightly open stance and strides to slightly closed. Uphill hand path creates some length and hook to swing, but bat speed is present. Ball comes off his bat well (it jumped on a triple to right-center) when he gets to extension and he has the ability to drive the baseball (87-mph exit velo). Posted a 4.41 in-game home-to-1B time and a 4.53 on a turn. Tracked ball well defensively in game action while showcasing athletic actions and 80-mph arm strength in workout.

Mike Speck, 2017, OF, Central
5-foot-9, 160-pound right-handed hitter. Hits from a slightly open stance with heel raise stride. Gets weight into his front side early, causing him to muscle the bat with his upper body and inhibiting the use of his lower half in his swing. Moved well defensively and showcased 84-mph arm strength in workout

Class of 2018

Gabe Cicala, 2018, OF, Lancaster Catholic

5-foot-9, 145-pound right-handed hitter. Starts from square stance with weight on back side, takes short stride, hips slide forward for weight transfer. Stiff wrists from holding bat deep and overrotating bottom hand. Showed ability to stay inside ball and use opposite field. Would benefit from additional physical strength. Moved well defensively and showed accurate 84-mph arm with low trajectory in workout.

Austin Lemke, 2018, OF, La Salle
5-foot-11, 190-pound left-handed hitter with some strength in his frame. Starts from wide open stance and strides to square. Cocks bat in set-up and drops hands to launch. Uphill path comes out of the zone early and has some stiffness. Showcased 80-mph arm strength in workout from a low three-quarter slot that caused his throws to tail.
