Preseason All-State: Pitcher Analysis

Illinois Scouting Staff

Today, we’ll examine our final group of players from Preseason All-State back in early February: the pitchers. It’s safe to say that this group was exceptional. While we expected to see a number of pitchers who made offseason jumps in velocity, it was the sheer quantity of arms that made these leaps that impressed us, one after the other. The talent these pitchers from the 2019 class displayed at the event was simply the highlight of the entire showcase.

Zeroing in on a few names is a difficult chore, considering how many commanded our attention that day, but there were those who managed to stand out despite all of the talent that surrounded them, including Griffin Holderfield (Oak Park-River Forest), Grant Leader (Lyons Township), and Bryce Barnett (Providence Catholic). These three were able to hit 92 mph -- tied for the day’s high -- while Holderfield and Leader managed to do it with regularity. Holderfield separated himself from the rest of the group because everything he threw was electric, from his fastball, sinking changeup, to his slider with plus potential -- and he was throwing them for strikes.

Another fine surprise was the amount of Central Illinois arms that demonstrably improved from a season ago, specifically the trio from the Peoria-area high school Dunlap: Taylor Catton, Andrew Pogue, and John Day. Catton actually found his way into the top-ten portion of the list, and he was joined by one other Central Illinois arm, Nick Gilhaus from Normal Community.

It’s impossible to shine a spotlight on all those who deserve a mention here, so we urge you to read through our top-25 ranking below as well as the best of the rest section in order to learn just how deep this class of juniors is on the mound.
