Kansas City Program Invitational: Top Prospects
July 6, 2022
Last weekend, the PBR Tournaments staff hosted the Kansas City Program Invitational, an event that featured 90+ teams from the 14U-to-17U level at Creekside Baseball Park in Parkville, Missouri.
Now, at the event’s conclusion, our staff will be rolling out several pieces of content related to what we saw throughout the weekend, starting with this ‘Top Prospects’ piece. Inside you’ll find 35 players that our scouts deemed the top prospects from the weekend after careful collaboration. These athletes, ranging anywhere from 2023-to-2026 graduates, popped amongst a loaded field of players at the KCPI.
We’ll highlight players in a ‘Names To Know’ article later in the week, and we’ll also release an All-Tournament team relatively shortly, so be on the lookout for those individual pieces. For now, read below to learn more about the top prospects from last weekend’s tournament.
TOP 35 PROSPECTS
Ethan Bagwell RHP / Collinsville , IL / 2024Rankings StateRank: 26 / POS: 10
Bagwell turned in one of the weekend’s most dominant outings, punching out 15 batters in 6 ⅔ scoreless innings for Extreme Elite National. The Mizzou commit boasts a physical 6-foot-2, 230-pound frame with durability and uses his size to generate power down the mound, sitting at 86-89 mph with a 90 mph high in this look. Bagwell turned to a 74-76 mph slider as his primary secondary pitch, spinning it with confidence and conviction throughout his outing. He landed it for strikes at ease and he also occasionally spotted it out of the zone for whiffs, too. Bagwell faded a low-80s changeup sparingly throughout his outing - a pitch that’s improved since we last saw him in the high school season. |
Carson Brumbaugh SS / Santa Fe, OK / 2025Rankings StateRank: 12 / POS: 4
A two-way follow in Oklahoma’s incoming sophomore class, Brumbaugh was a top performer from this past weekend’s event. He toed the rubber on Friday morning and punched out seven batters through four scoreless innings, touching 85 mph with his fastball from a live arm. His athleticism at the plate is obvious and so is his knack for hitting, driving in three runs in the same game that he excelled on the mound. Brumbaugh is one of five 2025 prospects currently on Team Oklahoma’s Future Games roster. |
Braylon Brooks SS / Tuttle, OK / 2024Another high-end prospect in Oklahoma’s 2024 class, Brooks looked the part on both sides of the ball for the Oklahoma Fuel throughout the weekend. He’s athletic at the plate and on the infield, getting off plenty of rotational hacks with controlled aggression. Brooks toed the rubber on Thursday night in a save situation, attacking hitters with a high-80s fastball from multiple arm angles as well. The former PBR Future Games participant is committed to Oklahoma State. |
Jeremy Comer OF / St James Academy, KS / 2023Committed to Tennessee, Comer doesn’t lack size or tools. A top prospect in the Kansas’ 2023 class, Comer oozes projection attached to a lanky 6-foot-3, 195-pound frame. We’ve seen him reach exit velocities as high as 101.6 mph and he’s barreled balls up further than 370 feet, averaging 91.1 mph at the NPI ProCase in early June. One of the toolsier athletes in attendance, Comer will be a follow from now throughout the next calendar year as the Midwest’s 2023 MLB Draft cycle begins. |
Kasey Crawford RHP / Olathe West, KS / 2023Crawford’s long, lanky levers and ¾ release point have to make for an uncomfortable at-bat, especially factoring in a high-80s power sinker that bursts into the bottom of the zone with life. Crawford also turned to a mid-70s changeup from a near identical arm angle to that aforementioned sinker, making for an intriguing two-pitch profile that erupted out of the ‘pen twice this weekend. Crawford is a high-end arm in the Kansas’ 2023 class and he’s committed to Oklahoma. |
Nick English C / Olathe South, KS / 2023Rankings StateRank: 7 / POS: 1
English, who represented Team Select at last year’s Future Games, showed well at the plate this weekend. The Kansas State commit owns easy bat speed speed and generates power with his rotational attack, flashing pull-side power throughout our looks. Perhaps English’s most impressive batted ball this weekend was a scorching triple on Saturday that rocketed over the left fielder’s head for a triple. He’s a real offensive talent that could find himself making an impact for the Wildcats at the next level sooner rather than later. |
Kash Ferris RHP / Carl Albert, OK / 2024Rankings StateRank: 20 / POS: 5
At 6-foot-3, 175-pound, Ferris brings loud present stuff and future intrigue to the mound. The uncommitted right-hander has been up to 89 mph in our looks, pitching in the mid-to-upper-80s from a controlled, relatively easy operation downhill. Though still developing feel for his secondaries, Ferris’ slider has some interesting spin characteristics, particularly a 2,400+ RPM average on the pitch. He’s one of the top uncommitted arms in the Oklahoma 2024 class and is headed to the PBR Future Games at the end of July. |
Cole Gibler LHP / Blue Springs, MO / 2024The top arm in Missouri’s 2024 class, Gibler absolutely dominated a quality opponent on Friday afternoon, striking out 14 batters in a complete game shutout. He’s an absolute bulldog with a clear competitive demeanor on the hill, attacking hitters with a mid-80s fastball that peaked at 88 mph early on. Though he relied primarily on his fastball, Gibler spun a mid-70s curveball as a change-of-pace offering throughout his outing, landing it for strikes in any given count. Committed to Arkansas, Gibler’s polish, mound presence, and pitchability are thoroughly advanced for his age. |
Owen Hall RHP / Edmond North, OK / 2024From a pure stuff standpoint, Hall stands atop a shortlist of prospects with the loudest arsenal we’ve seen at Creekside this summer. The Vanderbilt recruit fired his fastball in the upper-80s throughout his start, exploding it into the zone at 91-92 mph. He spun a low-80s power slider with downer two-plane break that averaged 2,800+ RPM. Facing a quality opponent, Hall allowed one earned run on two hits through six innings of work, punching out seven batters in that span. He’s one of the top pitching prospects in the country, slotted at No. 81 nationally for the 2024 class. |
Grant Hollister 3B / Blue Springs South, MO / 2024Hollister is another high-end prospect in Missouri’s 2024 group on this Royals Scout Team, slotting just outside the top-400 nationally for his class. He packs a punch from a 5-foot-11, 175-pound frame, flashing juice off the barrel from a long right-handed stroke that keeps his barrel in the zone. Hollister’s a sure-handed defender at third base with a strong, accurate arm across the infield. The Blue Springs South standout represented Team Select at the Future Games last year as an underclassman, and he’ll make the trip back to LakePoint again later this month with Team Missouri. |
Max Huston SS / Seaman , KS / 2025Huston may have been one of the bigger winners from this weekend, emerging as a true high-follow two-way prospect in the Kansas’ 2025 group. Huston hit towards the top of the Royals Scout Team lineup throughout the tournament, splitting time between shortstop and center field. He repeated line drive contact off his barrel, covering the plate at an advanced rate and spraying the ball to all fields. Huston later hopped on the mound and pumped a mid-80s fastball from an athletic slot, firing his hardest bullet at 87 mph with a low-70s breaking ball to pair. |
Dondreone Kennedy SS / Benbrook , TX / 2023Few possess the athleticism that Kennedy does, and he’s shown us next level impact stuff throughout multiple looks this summer. A 6.51 runner in the 60, Kennedy looks the part of a true top-of-the-order producer that generates easy bat speed from the right side and some lift through the zone. Kennedy caught our attention at multiple defensive spots throughout the summer as well, providing a positive return with the glove both in the outfield and infield. A former PBR Future Games participant, Kennedy is one of the top uncommitted prospects in the Texas’ 2023 class. |
Tommy Lapour RHP / Blue Springs South, MO / 2023Rankings StateRank: 17 / POS: 5
Lapour toed the rubber twice for the Royals Scout Team this past weekend, drawing the start on Thursday’s opening act and in their first playoff game Monday morning. The 6-foot-3, 225-pound Cincinnati commit peaked at 93 mph in both starts, holding 88-92 mph with life at the bottom of the zone throughout his outings. Lapour’s bread-and-butter secondary is a true swing-and-miss splitter with diving action in the low-80s, a pitch that plays especially well off his lower-quadrant fastball. A former PBR Future Games participant, the Bearcats should feel Lapour’s impact on the mound sooner rather than later. |
Jordan Martin SS / Jefferson City , MO / 2025Rankings StateRank: 15 / POS: 2
Martin’s been a winner thus far into 2022, popping to our scouts in the high school season and impressing yet again at the Top Prospect Games: Underclass event on June 7th. He flashed upside at the plate, utilizing his long, lanky 6-foot-4, 190-pound levers to whip balls off his barrel at various times throughout the weekend. Martin’s ultimate upside may lie on the mound, however, where he attacked hitters with an 85-88 mph fastball from a higher slot and spun a tighter, shorter wrinkle breaking ball around the zone. Martin will represent Team Select at the PBR Future Games at the end of this month, and he’s one of the higher ceiling prospects in Missouri’s 2025 class. |
Jeter Mauzey 1B / Hamilton, MO / 2023Rankings StateRank: 36 / POS: 2
Mauzey’s power projection is undeniable, standing at 6-foot-4, 185-pounds with long, whippy levers that generate juice and loft to the pull-side. Mauzey turned on a few baseballs with intent throughout the weekend, finishing his final KCPI tournament with an absolute no-doubt blast over the left field fence on Sunday afternoon. Mauzey is committed to New Mexico State, where he could be a middle-of-the-order contributor for the Aggies down the road. |
Tate McGuire RHP / Liberty North, MO / 2023McGuire proved his prominence as an upper-tier prospect in our region on Sunday, punching out six batters in a brief three inning stint. The 6-foot-3, 185-pound Arkansas’ commit reached a 92 mph high with his fastball, holding 87-91 mph from a short, quick arm slot. He faded his changeup in the mid-70s primarily to left-handed hitters and manipulated spin on a sharper, more firm upper-70s slider for whiffs out of the zone. McGuire’s present stuff and future physical projection suggest a relatively high ceiling for the future Razorback. |
Keaton Neal SS / Springhill, KS / 2026One of two 2026 prospects on this list, Neal’s outing on Thursday night was one of the day’s biggest takeaways. Standing at a lanky, athletic 6-foot, 150-pounds, Neal sat at 83-84 mph with his fastball, firing an 86 mph max on his hardest bullet from an easy, low-effort operation. He showed some two-way potential at the plate as the weekend went on, particularly on Sunday when he juiced a loud triple into the right-center gap for Prime 27:17. |
Cord Nolan OF / Bixby , OK / 2026Nolan’s status as a high-follow name in the Oklahoma 2026 class is clear, as he performed at the Oklahoma Top Prospect Underclass games and parlayed that into success throughout the KCPI. A switch-hitter, Nolan repeats his swing adequately from both sides of the plate and brings physicality to the dish from either side. He’s an above-average runner for his age that also moves swiftly around the outfield, reaching an 85 mph max at a recent event. Nolan will certainly be a name-to-know as he prepares for his high school career. |
Avery Ortiz SS / Union, OK / 2023Arguably the tournament’s top prospect, Ortiz’s ascent as a nationally-recognized prospect continues after a scorching hot high school season has parlayed into early summer success. The Oklahoma State commit launched 17 home runs for Union during the OHSAA season, bringing that seemingly effortless power to Creekside this past weekend. Ortiz scolded balls off the barrel in what seemed like every plate appearance, playing pepper with the outfield gaps prior to launching a no-doubt home run in BBA’s final pool game. His ability to find the barrel at the rate that he does is impressive and it’s largely in part to the upper-tier athletic profile that Ortiz possesses. Should Ortiz continue to perform at the rate that he has, expect his prospect status and draft stock to soar as the summer circuit comes to an end. |
Deacon Pomeroy C / Shawnee Heights, KS / 2025At 6-foot-4, 210-pounds, there’s not many 2025 graduates built like Pomeroy in the Midwest. He’s the top-ranked prospect in Kansas for his class and it’s evident as to why when you watch him play. Pomeroy’s right-handed barrel produced several loud lazers off his bat that sounded different from his peers, displaying well advanced raw power for someone his age. Pomeroy’s physicality translates behind the plate, as he threw several accurate bullets with carry from behind the plate in between innings during the tournament. Pomeroy is set to attend the PBR Future Games as an underclassman with Team Select later this month. |
Anson Seibert RHP / Blue Valley Southwest, KS / 2024Seibert’s start on Monday morning may have been the weekend’s biggest takeaway, as the 6-foot-8, 235-pound specimen truly dominated for the Royals Scout Team. Seibert repeated his delivery and controlled his body downhill exceptionally well for his stature, holding 88-93 mph throughout with a 94 mph max. He spun a sharp, power breaking ball in the low-80s as his outing went on and occasionally sank a lower-80s changeup as well. Seibert struck out nine batters over six innings on 69 pitches, failing to allow an earned run and allowing only one hit. Expect Seibert to rise nationally next time the rankings are updated as he’s one of the top uncommitted prospects in the Midwest’s 2024 class. |
Bo Shinkle CF / Blue Valley Southwest, KS / 2023Rankings StateRank: 29 / POS: 1
Hitting at the top of a loaded Building Champions’ lineup, Shinkle’s table-setter type profile from the left side is certainly one that most people would covet. It’s a short, athletic left-handed stroke with barrel control and line drive feel with advanced bat-to-ball skills at the plate. Shinkle’s a quality athlete, who ran a 6.85 60-yard dash at an event last summer, that can make an impact defensively in the outfield as well. The Kent State commit was certainly a winner from this weekend. |
Brody Shinkle SS / Blue Valley Southwest, KS / 2025Rankings StateRank: 12 / POS: 1
The younger brother of the aforementioned Bo, Brody is a fairly highly-regarded prospect in his own right, slotting inside the top-15 for the Kansas’ 2025 rankings. Like his older brother, Shinkle has hitterish tendencies at the plate and showed a quick, compact stroke from the right side. Shinkle showed athletic actions on the infield at last year’s Junior Future Games and also ran a 7.00 flat in the 60-yard dash. |
Addison Smith SS / Liberty, MO / 2023Smith appears to be trending upward thus far into the summer. He was a standout at the NPI in early June, impressed again at the Creekside Summer Championships, and performed for the Royals Scout Team this past weekend as well. Smith’s knack for contact at the plate was evident yet again, rarely swinging-and-missing and consistently putting the ball in play with more authority towards the back-end of the weekend. He continues to show savviness defensively at shortstop and was one of the tournament's top defenders at the six spot. Smith is committed to Oklahoma state. |
Trey Snyder SS / Liberty North, MO / 2024Snyder, who’s the top-ranked player in Missouri’s 2024 class, put his high-end athleticism on display throughout the weekend. At 6-foot-2, 182-pounds, Snyder’s most impressive athlete this weekend was his glove, as he routinely showed advanced up-the-middle actions at shortstop for the Royals Scout Team. That aforementioned athleticism translated to the box, as the Tennessee commit showed bat speed from the right side while getting off several healthy hacks throughout the weekend. A staple for Liberty North’s state championship team, Snyder slots inside the top-60 prospects nationally for the 2024 class. |
Bryce Tapley OF / Bethel, OK / 2025Rankings StateRank: 8 / POS: 1
Ranked inside the top-10 prospects in the Oklahoma 2025 class, Tapley’s most valuable asset on the diamond is a quick-twitch athletic skill-set that stands out when you watch him play. He’s an impact runner, busting it out of the box and consistently posting advanced run times down the line. He’s athletic at the plate with loose hands and a handsy right-handed stroke that he repeats in rhythm. Tapley recently peaked at 89 mph from the outfield at the Oklahoma Top Prospect Games, translating that aforementioned athleticism into that portion of his workout, too. He’ll represent Team Oklahoma at the PBR Future Games at the end of July. |
Timothy Teixeira RHP / Liberty, MO / 2024Teixeira's been somewhat of a pop-up prospect thus far into the summer, catching our attention at the Super 17 and showing even louder stuff in his start on Friday. The 6-foot-1, 206-pound sturdy right-hander filled the zone up with a mid-to-upper-80s fastball, peaking at 89 mph from a true ¾ slot with upper-quadrant life at times. Teixeira spun a sweeping slider that plays well off his fastball, working from a similar arm angle. His power stuff is certain to generate some buzz throughout the summer and Teixeira’s an arrow-up prospect in Missouri’s incoming junior group. |
Kenton Unruh OF / Staley, MO / 2024Ranked nationally in the 2024 class, Unruh has shown our staff loud raw strength in previous looks, and he juiced several balls that confirmed that throughout the weekend. Built at a strong 6-foot, 185-pounds, Unruh generates bat speed from the right side and scolds balls off the barrel, doing so twice in the same game on the tournament’s first day. He’s run as fast as a 6.81 60-yard dash previously while also peaking at 86 mph from the outfield. Unruh remains a top uncommitted prospect in Missouri’s incoming junior class and he’s set to represent Team Missouri at the Future Games at the end of this month. |
Drew Veatch SS / Andover Central, KS / 2023Rankings StateRank: 18 / POS: 3
Veatch has elite athleticism attached to a highly projectable 6-foot-2, 165-pound frame. He’s run as fast as a 6.39 in the 60-yard dash at our events in the past, and it’s real impact speed that translates onto the diamond. Veatch repeats a short, uphill right-handed swing with relative ease, and it’s likely he’ll add more impact onto his barrel as he fills out his frame. Still uncommitted, Veatch is one of the top prospects still on the market in the class. |
Colton Wemhoff OF / Rockhurst, MO / 2023Rankings StateRank: 14 / POS: 2
Few have impacted the ball with as much authority as Wemhoff has at Creekside this summer, as the 6-foot-2, 185-pound Jayhawk recruit thumps balls off his barrel at a different impact than most. Hitting primarily out of the cleanup spot for the Royals Scout Team, Wemhoff’s hardest hit ball was a screaming no-doubt home run on Saturday afternoon that tied the game late in an eventual victory for the tournament runner-ups. Wemhoff’s tools translate to the outfield, where he’s an above-average athlete that comfortably roams the outfield grass with equally impressive arm strength to pair. |
Grady Westphal RHP / Blue Valley, KS / 2025A top prospect in the Kansas’ 2025 class, and top-150 nationally, Westphal threw twice this past weekend for Building Champions Navy and looked the part in both looks. The 6-foot-3, 175-pound incoming sophomore pumped his hardest bullet at 88 mph, pitching and holding mid-80s velocity. Westphal spun a 74-77 mph breaking ball with downer spin and two-plane break, ripping it off from a similar slot and intent to his fastball. Athletic with plenty of physical projection left to come, Westphal looks every bit the part of a premier pitching prospect in the Midwest’s 2025 class. |
Jack Williams OF / Bixby, OK / 2023Rankings StateRank: 19 / POS: 3
A standout at our Super 17 tournament two weeks ago, Williams’ continued what’s been a hot summer for the uncommitted 6-foot-4, 210-pound incoming senior at the KCPI. He continued to show a powerful stroke from the right side, elevating the baseball with intent throughout the park and displaying some of the loudest raw power in attendance. Built like an NFL linebacker, Williams doesn’t lack any bit of tools. He’s a 6.75 runner that’s breached the 105 mph max exit velocity mark at our events in the past, and he’s also been up to 88 mph from the outfield and on the mound. |
Kaiden Wilson LHP / Raymore-Peculiar, MO / 2023At 6-foot-2, 195-pounds, Wilson is one of the more interesting prospects from the Kansas City region. He wields loud stuff from the left side, pitching in the upper-80s with his fastball and featuring a high-arching breaking ball with sharp spin at 70-73 mph. Committed to Louisiana State, Wilson punched out seven batters over three innings of work in his start on Sunday. |
Lukas Wilson SS / Staley, MO / 2024Rankings StateRank: 14 / POS: 4
Wilson is one of the top bats that Missouri’s 2024 class has to offer, as a strong, well-proportioned switch-hitter that repeats from both sides of the plate. He represented Team Select at the Future Games last year as an underclassmen with athletic actions on the infield that’ll keep him up the middle down the road. Wilson will be making the trip back to LakePoint this summer as a member of Team Missouri’s squad. |
Ty Wisdom 2B / Liberty North, MO / 2023Rankings StateRank: 15 / POS: 1
A catalyst for Missouri’s top high school program and eventual state champion, Wisdom stood out earlier this summer at the Creekside Summer Championships and did so again this past weekend for the Royals Scout Team. At 5-foot-11, 185-pounds, Wisdom checks several boxes on the diamond. He consistently puts together quality at-bats and has a knack for contact, utilizing the whole field from the left side of the plate. Defensively, Wisdom brings a steady, sure-handed glove to the keystone and he’ll always be counted on as a reliable option at that spot on the infield. He’ll even hop on the mound if needed, pumping mid-to-upper-80s fastballs for strikes on the regular. A former PBR Future Gamer, Wisdom is set to be a Jayhawk around this time next year. |
