Initial 2022 PBR Draft Board Released
January 31, 2022

There may be a lockout for Major League Baseball with many questions to be answered in the new Collective Bargaining Agreement, but we can tell you who the top prospects are in amateur baseball. The first edition of the 2022 PBR Draft Board is here, as the college and high school seasons approach and the junior college season is already underway.
The top of the class is heavy with hitters, taking up the top six spots and eight of the top 10. Holding that No. 1 spot is 3B/1B Jacob Berry (Louisiana State), who followed head coach Jay Johnson from Arizona. He has an excellent approach and big power from both sides of the plate, as evidenced by his big freshman year with the Wildcats and summer with Team USA. At Arizona, he slashed .352/.439/.676 with 17 home runs. With the Collegiate National Team he did struggle against professional competition, but ended with a .387/.475/.871 line. Even coming close to a repeat performance in the SEC would make him a clear favorite for the first overall pick, but SS Brooks Lee (Cal Poly) is right on his heels. Also a switch-hitter, Lee has excellent bat-to-ball skills from the left side and some pop from both. He hit .342/.384/.626 with 10 home runs last spring, then .306/.342/.444 with Team USA and .405/.432/.667 in the Cape Cod League.
At Nos. 3 and 4 are the top two high school prospects in SS Termarr Johnson (Mays HS, GA) and OF Elijah Green (IMG Academy, FL). Johnson is the best pure hitter in the prep ranks in recent memory, showing an innate ability to control at-bats and barrel the baseball to all fields. Green is an electric athlete with five-tool potential. Rounding out the top five is OF Gavin Cross (Virginia Tech), who has fast-twitch actions with a power-speed combination.
The top two pitchers are the projectable RHP Dylan Lesko (Buford HS, GA), who sports a mid-90s fastball, excellent feel for a changeup and the makings of a power curveball, and former Vanderbilt RHP Kumar Rocker, who went unsigned as the 10th overall pick in 2021.
Rocker is just the start of the questions surrounding the college pitching crop in 2022. Three arms--LHP Reggie Crawford (Connecticut), LHP Connor Prielipp (Alabama) and RHP Peyton Pallette (Arkansas)--rank among the top 50 prospects, but will miss the season due to Tommy John surgery. RHP Blade Tidwell (Tennessee) will also start the season on the shelf. That leaves LHP Carson Whisenhunt (East Carolina), LHP Hunter Barco (Florida), RHP Landon Sims (Mississippi State) and RHP Jonathan Cannon (Georgia) as the only healthy college pitchers in the top 50.
It’s a strong year for eligible sophomores with Berry, C Daniel Susac (Arizona), C Kevin Parada (Georgia Tech) and 3B Cayden Wallace (Arkansas) ranking in the top 20 and 14 total in the top 200.
3B Cam Collier (Chipola JC) will be an interesting prospect to follow throughout the spring, after he reclassified from 2023 and graduated high school early to attend junior college. The son of former big leaguer Lou Collier, he has an easy left-handed swing with burgeoning power.
The crowding of rosters caused by COVID-19 remains an effect as there are players with the potential to be top-three-round picks who had limited exposure last spring, leaving plenty of opportunity for guys to climb the board over the next several months.
Asterisks indicate draft-eligble sophomores.
